Family time in The Bay Area. Here I am with family and friends on Christmas Eve, glowing after Mission Impossible 4 at the Metreon in San Francisco, CA. Did I mention that Tom Cruise ROCKS ? We all think so...

MI4 was excellent. I was very surprised at how fun that was to see. Good choice!

Today my jeans (my old nudies this time) partook in some Christmas shenanigans:

^^^^ My nephew standing by my parents' massive tree....

My wife surprised me with what is undoubtedly the best gift i have ever received. This is an original canvas print of marvel comics civil war #1. It is the michael turner variant (my favorite artist who died a couple years back) with my all time favorite super hero (wolverine). It is very limited and numbered 17 of 20, and it is signed by stan lee. I could not believe she got her hands on this.

^^^^ I am a huge comic nerd and have an extensive collection. The actual comic that uses that print as its cover is my single favorite issue that i own, and she had no idea of that fact when she bought this print. Needless to say, she beat me at marriage today.

Also got a nice new pair of santoni's :)

and my in laws got me the most epicly named hot sauce ever:

(tasted good too).

Anyway, I hope you all had a very merry christmas!

Love,

max power, your locale looks very European and beautiful ! venomous72, your food looks succulent but i would be FAT if I ate like that too often. zeen...quit your day job and sign on with National Geographic or Scientific American Mag ! -z- your photos more than any other reinforce the aphorism that indelible wisdom is all about experiences and not about clothes and things.

Went to the city on Friday... First time by myself and boy was it great! I didn't have to do what other people wanted I could do whatever my free will wanted! I didn't plan on making a WAYJDT story but I have a few snaps from walking around. I went in to go to Adorama and pick up a new lens.

I walked to Adorama and then tried going to soho but that's when I realized I had no clue where Soho was so I gave up and grabbed a slice to eat.

Started heading off to central park

And finally after 50 or so blocks I made it to central park. I was supposed to meet someone there but I left cause to be honest it was around 2:30 and by the time I made it back to penn it was going to be 3 and I wanted to catch a train that was off-peak. Either way it was a great day.

damn great pics again lax...pretty jealous of you visiting NY as well :D

Thanks TF! I'll be visiting NY a ton now :D

nice photos as always :)

Thanks BEF!

nice pictures lax! the framing is good but i would desaturate them a little less! makes it look a little too moody and cold. just my 2 cents though! pizza slice is making me hungry at 2.45am here.

You know what - I edited them on the Mac and trust me colors look perfect on a mac. But I moved back to my PC and the colors just look like shit compared to the macs contrasty resolution. But thanks for the feedback!

did the midwest redneck outing by shooting at stuff with guns. i'm definitely better at stationary targets.

i've only been a couple of times, but my brother-in-law and his uncles talked me into it.

Today my jeans to a trip to the mall to exchange a pair of pants I got for a gift:

^^^^^ car ride crotch shot.

Saw this catastrophe....:

IMG_2503.jpg

^^^^ not my style but apparently people keep buying this stuff so....to each his own....

Checked out a sweet calendar:

Grabbed lunch:

IMG_2509.jpg

Quick WAYWT while at one of my wife's favorite stores:

IMG_2508.jpg

^^^^ The store carries mainly g star and diesel stuff...neither of which is my style really. Much of it feels kind of cheaply made but some isn't too bad. My wife picked up a pair of g star jeans. i've tried g stars on before, I swear they don't make a single cut that fits me properly or doesn't have random ass weird distressing. Whatever. They look good on her at least.

Thanks riff. Yeah well with the exception to the 1st, 2nd, and 4th pictures the rest are with the 85. The other ones are with the 35 <img alt=":)" class="bbc_emoticon" src="http://supertalk.superfuture.com/public/style_emoticons/default/smile.png"><br>

are you shooting crop of did you switch to FF yet? I saw you mention the switch a while back...good set though. i like the de-saturation as well, i feel winter lends itself well to a muted or reduced color palette. Edited by -Z-

Thanks -z-. Yeah, I'm still shooting crop. I actually sold my 7D planning on getting the 5D2 but other people convinced me to wait until the 5D3 dropped so I would have a better choice but I wound up blowing that money on a new lens cause shooting 85 on a crop all the time is a bit too long for me.

By the way I should mention it feels like it is far from winter here in NY, it actually sucks cause we've only had snow once this year and that was in October.

I have been on the move quite a bit lately. and it feels weird to be settling in Shenzhen for what looks like another month down here in a paradise weather winter haven. My new home in Beijing is sitting collecting dust, as I'm down here solving other people's problems yet again...that does, however give me the opportunity to have some photographic exploration time and I was in Hong Kong over the holidays and shot a bit on my last day there...I was trying to focus on people, and I found that experimenting with a square crop was a great way to challenge my composition. I had this in mind while shooting, and tried to recompose those shots i had in my head to the best of my ability afterward in lightroom...

we begin walking from Tsim Sha Tsui up out towards Jordan...I was shooting with my 50mm for the first time in a while, and had been used to my 28mm at this point. getting closer to my subject and examining more details of everyday life was a nice return to using this old lens..

6619728581_55afb7ef75_z.jpg

times like this i wish i spoke cantonese, or that my mandarin was much better, this shop was amazing. i would have loved to have a chat...

6619730421_ee4aa2ed6e_z.jpg

As we approached the Temple street market, we passed an extremely crowded local eatery which looked like it had been frequented by the same lively group of men each afternoon for as long as they had lived in the neighborhood...they were playing cards, drinking, shouting, and enjoying every minute of the fading afternoon with each other in the falling sunlight. This group was particularly interesting, one man had passed out asleep while the other continued on with his paper...

6619731947_f540bb43c2_z.jpg

one facet of street life that i do love about china, and even japan as that is my limited access to asian cultures in person is their propensity for cigarette smoking. however bad for your health it is, it brings people outside to smoke, and thus functions to create a more active, lively sidewalk community. I love this portrait, before this was taken, this guy noticed me, smiled, took a drag, blew it out and then relaxed into this calm moment i got here...

6619735597_f8edd66283_z.jpg

this strange collection of figures came together in an alley way off Temple Street Market. everyone was setting up for the crowds that were sure to frequent that night, it was a wonderful time to stroll through, seeing it in a state of incomplete, and without any of the crowd...

6619737405_7c88e066d1_z.jpg

I'm not sure what captivated me about this lady...she was the only one outside on this particular street...she gave the impression that she was supposed to be there, this shot spoke well to that, as if she was guarding those two doorways with a stern belligerence.

6619740093_1cbfb300cf_z.jpg

taking a break outside of his storefront with the paper...a snapshot of much of what happens around this time in HK.

6619741623_a73ce2f7d7_z.jpg

I love this shot because it feels like transposing a modern 201x's man into what could be any alleyway in any Hong Kong action movie I have ever seen...so much of what goes on here is reliant on old customs, old, reworked parts and tools, old ways, yet the ever present push of technology is always there, and everyone, as we know, is tied to their cell phone....

6619746255_e55a366562_z.jpg

I'll leave this set with this guy...having a hell of a nice drink in the park in a local neighborhood. this place was packed full of about 35 men all reading the paper over an afternoon drink and a cigarette. was quite the sight. i was impressed at his drinking out of a measured cup..

almost grabbed some seafood here on our way back down toward TST....love how everything in HK has a neon sign

6619749831_c73d6e8a2d_z.jpg

HK sometimes feels like chaos to me, so many people, so little space. everyone is outside crowding the sidewalks, tourists, sellers, locals going home, to work, to eat, this somehow made it feel easy, the guy sitting on the fence really made Hong Kong slow down a bit...

6619753461_e9f3c7a539_z.jpg

snapped this shot of a street cleaner as we made it back to the Shama where we were staying...

6619755629_85a9f570a9_z.jpg

as we started to lose the sun on our last day in HK I was sad to leave that night. I've only spent about 7 days here, but the frantic pace of the city and the impressive way that everyone lives together here amazes me. I love the food, the culture, and the way i feel strangely at home here. I was happy to return to the quiet of Shenzhen, but i look forward to the next time i set food in HK, hopefully sooner rather than later.

beautiful post -z-. fantastic photos supplemented by an equally great commentary on your thoughts to them. it is a great introspective to Hong Kong and i think many will really appreciate it. done in black and white beautifully, it really frames the old-fashioned-ness (in a good way) of Hong Kong really well. your best set yet...
