Always a traveling gal, Rel!

Xpost from RxC... The weekly catch-up…. Now that the little one is back to school, and the summer guests/family have gone home, we are back to more of a "routine" here.

We went to catch the last car meet. Lot's of goodies on display.

Because it was the final meet of the year, they had BBQ's & "entertainment". The entertainment was in the form of…. ELVIS! Three of them actually. Mercifully, I missed the first performance ;)

Plenty of mullets in attendance!

It was all pretty meh……. Until "Marilyn" made an unexpected appearance. Assholes kept getting in the way of my shots! :P

It was an amazing summer weather (and other-) -wise, and it's been a beautiful start to fall.

We've been taking the pups to their usual haunts - long walks in parks & on the beach. So lucky to live close to places like this!

Now I'm going to go finish loading the car. I'm heading off to do the last sportive of the season: 200 miles, with 22000ft of elevation gain! We start at 6AM tomorrow…..

Have a great weekend guys!

Wow Riff, you are so lucky to be living near the parks. You don't know how envious i am. Must spread..

Recently went for a night hike with some of my friends to shoot more bugs. Apparently, the bugs seem to be more calm at night then in the day. Also, I think I'm starting to get the hang of macro :P

My LVCs went the the world's largest corn maze! Maybe 10 miles of path on about 33 acres of corn, though we only went through about 4 miles of it.

Not my picture (obviously), but to give you an idea of what we're dealing with:

maze-2011-large.jpg

Punching my card at one of 25 stations scattered throughout the maze:

Piggyback rides:

There's a bunch of other stuff besides corn. Like slides:

201109113.png

And a zip line thing:

201109115.png

Also these gigantic inflatable pillows. It's like an adult-sized bouncey house, but instead of being surrounded by padded walls, there's gravel:

Tonight myself, my wife, and my Roy's popped off to see a little act you may have heard of Fleet Foxes, in Tulsa at the legendary Cain's Ballroom.

Words other than 'holy shit' or 'best show ever' don't do it any justice. A 2 hour set and a 5 song encore... all I can say is, when a chance to see them is presented GO. GO! Easily the best live band I've seen in quite some time.

I am rather sleepy, but I'll do my best to upload some pictures from our trip and the show tommorow.

First set from HK...unintentionally walked from Central on the water, to the Peak. Wasn't too bad, just really freakin' hot up there in the jungle.

decided we should just walk up, and keep heading up until we feel like heading back down, which turned into needing to keep going up because we were so much closer to the top...

Wow, amazing post -Z-. I mean like damn.

Went upstate NY today. Was pretty fun but - I didn't feel too great.. Not going to put too much words with my post this time since I should really be studying, and need to get back to school work.

6161043628_12d91bf3df_z.jpg

6160504639_3faedc7a4f_z.jpg

After 2 hours in the car this is where we finally stopped. Take not of that mountain. Anyways, we stopped to get food (didn't feel like bringing my camera).

6160506979_5631e29e16_z.jpg

But continued..

..we went hiking (washburn trail).

6161049686_d05731fe17_z.jpg

Here is all the images from on the way up.

6160518487_74ee751ccc_z.jpg

We just finished walking up part of the 'easy' part of the mountain. Now comes the hard part. It was like a 65 degree vertical slope.

...I thought I took more pictures to show what it was like. Anyways here's me, out of shape, feeling like shit, sweaty and tired. Me.

6160533765_b0f5a59542_z.jpg

This is how high up we were in addition to the fact that that is a flat part up on a mountain. Meaning the easy trail led to down there, and the hard trail led to where I am taking the photo. If that makes sense. It was probably about a 200 ft drop off as well.

6161083514_c22258c9b7_z.jpg

Even the dogs were tired.

6160545813_200e98061b_z.jpg

We continued going up, and this is what it looked like - it eventually became much steeper.

6161089060_f7d8469313_z.jpg

Even higher up.

Saw a sweet sunset and I managed to get another pano as well. If you really care, yes it does kind of go upwards on the left, but I have no clue how to fix that. It is also a bit blurry, and yatta yatta..

Hi guys. Haven't had the opportunity to post in here in a while so I thought now might be a good time.

Yesterday lady and I went to the Baltimore DIY Fest. Although we didn't stay all too long we learned some cool stuff. The thing that piqued our interest the most was lactic acid fermentation. Although I don't quite understand all of the benefits of this process yet, it is essentially a process of preserving foods that leaves all of their amino acids in tact. All LAF foods are fit for a raw vegan lifestyle and are chock full of probiotics.

1.jpg

Exciting, right? So we went to the farmers market this morning to pick up all the stuff we might need to do this. We really enjoyed pickled watermelon rind, but that will have to wait for another day.

7.jpg

3.jpg

Zeke's Coffee is a big yes.

2.jpg

4.jpg

5.jpg

6.jpg

Great! So now we have cabbage, beets, carrots, and some other produce to get us through the week. Off to Whole Foods.

I was feeling sick. Snagged some Sambuca. Supposed it can nip a cold in the bud within a couple of days.

9.jpg

I take tons of pictures of my girlfriends back because while I'm trying to take a cool photo she keeps walking. She doesn't much care for SuperFuture, and I'm inclined to think that's a good thing.

8.jpg

You can tell she wishes I would get my camera out of her face.

Oh, and here's a fit.

2011-09-18_12-29-23_432.jpg

So onto the LAF.

Chop cabbage.

11.jpg

Apparently carrots do best grated.

12.jpg

And apple is best diced. Here's a photo pre dice...

13.jpg

Add some sea salt and you're good to go. Give it a week and you've got kraut!

14.jpg

Here are the beets off to the races on the stove.

15.jpg

Pickles sitting in brine.

16.jpg

And finally beets and beets with carrots.

17.jpg

This is the book to have if any of this stuff might interest you. Luckily, my girls mother is super awesome and already owned it. It'll teach you to make your own Sake, tempeh, meade, wine, beet, sauerkraut, pickles, miso, and more.

Alright guys! Sorry for the overload, but I just got the new Droid Bionic. Seems to work well in good light. Bad light makes it really dive.

sucks to hear man butsince you're in Hong Kong/China, you should definitely scout around for those. they will probably be dirt cheap there, especially in Hong Kong.

Lax, ADH - good stuff! -Z-, that's probably the best I've seen from you since you left home - nice!

RxC xpost...

Did a little "tour" over the weekend - had an awesome time! The RxC played a very minor role in driving there/back, and chilling in the evenings.

No great photography here - just brought my point-and-shoot...

A small sampling of the supplies I brought along

About 50 of us did the ride. This wasn't a sanctioned event - a few of us hardcore nuts found this year's schedule to be lacking in excitement, so we organized a private race - 200 miles with about 22000ft elevation gain! :D

Most of the guys left either Saturday night after the race, or early Sunday. But about 15 of us stayed and did an easy 100k Sunday morning. That's when a buddy snapped this pic of me.

6160860785_acc510b24a_z.jpg

I'm standing in front of Bopple hill, which was the final hill of our race. Bopple hill has just under 700ft of climbing in about 3/4 of a mile. Its steepest section is a 23% grade…

I can honestly say that I'm looking forward to a couple of weeks out of the saddle before cross season starts!

Just to keep things on topic - the last shots of my RxC, before they go into the wash this week. They're kinda dingy & dirty, it's time..

got an emergency call at work today.i made a steely skeleton of a horse two weeks ago, following strictly the technichal drawings.half finished with it,the sculptors realized that they are going to equip a hot-blooded stallion with the forlegs of an Island pony:

6163243397_e9b7151e51_z.jpg

6163781404_68ee389e58_z.jpg

time to get the specialist literature out and study the physical proportions of a horse.this should have been done weeks before by others, but who am i,critizising people i dont even know?

6163783038_6bf4cccae9_z.jpg

this is a premiere.ive never amputated a headless horse before in my life

6163252545_609cae5bbf_z.jpg

somehow,i even enjoyed it.but only a tiny bit,really.

6163254055_27c6df32b8_z.jpg

just imagine this would be a living horse

6163257645_8015678963_z.jpg

This weekend I spent some quality time with the family picking apples in Michigan. My dads side of the family have been coming to the same orchard for over 30 years now, I myself have only been present for 25 - but I haven't missed a weekend yet and I don't think I ever intend to!

It was a bit early forbsome of the new apples, and a bit late for some of my favorites - the honey crisps in particular, but we had a nice time enjoying the weather and eating lunch in the orchard like we always do.

Mutsu apples - great for pies!

Irt2ll.jpg

We set up our little camp where we always do - in the middle of some rows of red delicious apples. They were a little more tart this year but still good eatin' plus, my dog Olive is not picky when it comes to apples so she was having a great time.

Lb3dXl.jpg

Plenty of room to walk the dogs and hike in the woods a bit - plus you get to see some of the ubiquitous corn of the Midwest!

My Mum, brother-in-law and I climbed the tallest mountain in the contiguous USA this weekend -- Mt. Whitney -- at 14505 feet -- IN ONE DAY. The round trip hike is 22-miles long, and it involves the most brutal, unforgiving terrain imaginable. I wore my Roy Jean RS2 Nihon - Straight Leg and Danner boots. Honestly, wearing denim on this hike was incredibly stupid on my part. The ROYs held up well but the extreme weather conditions, distance and terrain of Mt. Whitney demanded proper mountain-climbing pant gear (such as North Face or Patagonia). I just don't see any kind of denim as an option here. My Danner boots were phenomenal though...wearing those was a flawless move. I don't see Red Wings as an option here either...to conquer Mt. Whitney, one requires a hard core, serious hiking boot.

This was mine and my brother-in-law's 2nd climb, and it was my 67-year-old Mum's 7th. The fact that my Mum has conquered this mountain 7 times, once completely alone, is nothing short of amazing.

Very, very, very few people can conquer Mt. Whitney. It requires both extraordinary physical fitness as well as ridiculous mental toughness.

Now, for some photos...
