Again with Sufu's mysterious disappearing posts. Apologies if the original resurfaces.

In Hawaii.

My jeans and I went up through the Pali pass and enjoyed the views and the wild chickens.

Then down to Kaliu beach:

Later through Honolulu. We stopped at King Kamehameha's statue downtown:

Then back to Waikiki. A swim near the military R & R center:

Then, dinner at Blue Water shrimp shack, one of the few good and reasonable places in the neighborhood.

(HoustonChris- thanks. I like Sutro tower a lot, but I was glad to be shut of it for a while.)

Catching up on the WAYJDT thread.

How could no one have pointed out how awesome this is?

You get used to them after a while...

Can't imagine how hot it'll be inside that thing, especially during Singapore's summer; poor dude.

photographed the new Self edge store that just opened in LA on La Brea.

the store looks fantastic and Kiya and his crew did a great job.

I can't post the actual pics as they are exclusive to inventory magazine's blog. However, with Kiya's permission I took some iPhone pics for all you denim heads that can't be here today to check out the store.

Enjoy the pics. I can tell you that the store smelled of pure raw Japanese denim, which is much better than the new car smell.

Cool displays every where. this one house a buch of top notch denim from all our favorite brands such as Iron Heart, Flat Head, as well as the new Mister Freedom jeans.

I thought about going there, but it didn't pan out. The architecture is really nice. What's the inside like?

Some of the woodwork is really beautiful, but on the whole, it's sort of a weird experience. After the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown, all of the original contents of the palace were auctioned off. Over the decades, they've managed to track some of it down or reproduce it from old photos and other records, but some stuff is just... gone. There are empty spaces for them, but the actual objects aren't there. It makes the place feel incomplete, which I guess it is. It's definitely worth it to take the tour, just to hear about the history of the islands, the royal family and the building.

My jeans and I went to one of our favorite places in Hawaii- Eggs 'n' Things in Waikiki.

Its a breakfast joint that caters specifically to Japanese tourists who want to have an "American"-style dining experience.

The waitresses are awesome. They wear these really brightly-colored tie around aprons with cleavage and ruffles, with the lower part being formed into chaps that tie off below the knee. I didn't get a good shot of one this time, and they've toned them down a little bit as of late, sadly. This photo is from a couple of years ago.

You can sort of get the picture. Like being served pancakes by Charo's auntie.

There's always a long wait, which points out the time difference between Hawaii & Japan:

4950261846_d01785da52_o.jpg

The culture shock can be really entertaining. A lot of the Japanese tourists here have never used a knife and fork, so its sort of the analog of watching a westerner who's never used chopsticks try and figure it out.

There was a newlywed-looking Japanese couple seated next to us that were completely flummoxed by the silverware:

4950261994_a5f458fdd4_o.jpg

I wish I could have gotten more pictures. The chick was hilarious. She would pick up her knife and fork over-handed and kind stare at the pancakes, which equally threw her.

Then she would put them down and stare at the pancakes, several times putting both hands flat on her pancakes and pressing down on them. Then she would sit back and stare at them some more in apparent disbelief. I pointed at the syrup and mimed pouring it on the pancakes, which they then did properly, with lots of cute mini-bows. It didn't help much though, as they left this:

The girls on our other side were old hands, and seemed to be asking me to call them later:

4949668559_943f9be1ca_o.jpg

Our incredibly steezy busboy, Russel, was dripping with exactly matching heavy silver necklaces and bracelets. He showed us his watch, with a reversible face.

The plainer side for work:

4950262126_b448e56beb_o.jpg

and the other, rhinestone encrusted side, for play:

And then we went to some beaches and stuff.

Roy, enjoying your vacation!

Farhad, thanks for the tour of SELA!

Went down to nicollet island with my pops and my daughter just to hang out on a nice evening...She turns 3 in 2 weeks, and she really loves exploring. so instead of going around the north side of the island like grandpa and I wanted to, we followed her around for an hour or 2 while she picked dandelions, played with spider webs, wanted to go swimming in the "pool" (thats a fast moving RIVER darling)

Finished one, third of the way through the second.

Flat Head's still looking raw. They'll get more loving once university starts.

I guess that might be appropriate, that the palace is presented as a looted property. You can see why there's still a secessionist movement in Hawaii. I saw their flags (the Hawaii state flag flown upside down) all over the islands, and noticed an especially large number of them on the windward shore of Oahu north of Kailua.

You seem to know something about Hawaiin history- you from there?

We went to the north shore of Oahu.

Snorkeled at Shark's Cove:

Admired the scenery:

Had shave ice at Matsumoto's & plate lunch at Kinike's "Fear God" Christian Power Lifting Team Center & BBQ:

Drove down to Kailua:

And looked out over Halona Cove (a composite shot):

Nah, that paragraph summed up most of my knowledge about Hawaii. That secessionist movement stuff reminds me of the crazy state I live in now. A lot more justified for Hawaii, I have to say.

On a separate note, damn, tourists wear some ugly crap.
