demon lover

swimming pool

funny games

the gleaners and i

julien donkey boy

weekend (godard)

Hurray for weekend!!!

I'm really curious about the inclusion of funny games, which, in my mind, pales in comparison to Code inconnu (code unknown?) and Caché (hidden)

that's my favorite single scene in movie history. From the part where they're panning across the Philippines jungle and the Anita Mui (RIP) song is playing to him getting ready to go out...i'm spellbound every time i watch that. IF wong kar wai ever makes a spin off movie of that character, i wanna be in it. opening scene: a bunch of us sitting at some 60's cafe, stan getz playing in the background and we're chain smoking with half empty plates of cha chan teng food and iced teas...the chatter is barely audible but it doesn't matter; it's all about the mood!

DESIGNERSHEEP:

If I could choose between seeing Satantango, or Werkmeister harmonies in a great movie theatre this coming weekend, which would you recomend I see?

Satantango..... if you can. Really... please :) You know it is 7 1/2 hours right? If I had a chance to see it in a theatre I'd pay $100 for it. Both films are great, and they both work upon the same cinematic concept of extending and distorting the viewer's sense of time. To me, Satantango is just better realized version of this concept, because director took the time distortion to an extreme. I will comment further on this idea after you've watched it. Make sure you get a good night's sleep beforehand!

Ah that scene. Well... honestly that scene did nothing to me hehe. I only liked the ice cream scenes from Fallen Angels.

We'll see what happens man. Yeah I definately know its seven and a half hours! I own it on DVD, but I havent got around to watching it. I noticed you had it in your Sig a few months back, and wondered if it was in reference to the movie. Now it's clear that it was.

I loved Werkmeister harmonies. Prolly one of the best films I've seen in my short life. Don't know if I can sacrifice my whole saturday to the '"Tango" (specially since I'm seeing WH the next day!) but I'll definately take what you said into account and let you know how it goes...

Ah I did like it but I'm no biggie on Wong in general haha. I used to go gar gar over his films, but not anymore. My favourite two are Happy Together and Chungking Express, and I do like the rest except 2046 which I found totally dull and empty, except a few scenes. Yeah I actually really liked scenes involving Takeshi Kaneshiro and his father and also the pig scene.

"Empty"is a good word to describe most his output. Not so much "style over substance" I've realized, but more "style AS substance". At face value, there's nothing really wrong with that, I'm just not interested.

mass/designersheep,

glad to see there are some WKW fans on this board. as you can tell from my name and avatar, i'm a huge WKW fan. Actually all of his films are my favorite movies, just depends on what mood i'm in. But if i was to pick one, obviously Fallen Angels feels the most special, with the mood it casts on the audience and my favorite ending in a WKW film.

notable mention: Last Life in the Universe, the thai/japanese film, christopher doyle on camera. fucking awesome.
