there's loads more than this, but off the top of my head:

La Haine

Akira

United 93

Grosse Point Blank

Rushmore

Dr Strangelove

The Big Lebowski

Brokeback Mountain

The Driver

As the UK is not represented i might stick in something by Greenaway or Winterbottom, or maybe A Company Of Wolves by Jordan. No Jarmusch there either, i love mystery train and Ghost Dog. Just picked up a Kurosawa boxed set off ebay that i've gotta plow through as well...bugger, no room for Lynch, or Robocop...10 isn't enough.

Funny how we all think we're so special yet a lot of people like the same movies. Musical tastes are more diverse. Goes to show you that film is universal.

Personally I think it's easier to recognise a quality movie without being misled by your personal taste than doing the same with music. Musicwise people are bound to their taste too much to look at it in a objective way.

I guess it depends on generation, but I thought Jarhead accurately represented my experience in the Marine Corps.

All I ever shot was paper. What I meant though was that, to me, the way the Marines in that movie were portrayed, is the way it really is. We jerk off, fuck around, are scared shitless sometimes, our women get fucked back home sometimes. At the end of the day though most Marines love the shit. I liked that they didn't try to portray the Marines as caricatures of themselves--which some Marines actually are--but those have been portrayed in film enough and it was nice to a different take on it. Alot of those guys reminded me of guys I knew while I was in. Also, I don't pray for war. I'm for peace, but I know what its like to be trained for war and feel frustrated that your not out "getting some", while others are. Its almost as if someone is carrying your balls for you.

hey lng, you say jarhead represented your time in the marines accurately, but tdoes this make you prefer the movie over full metal jacket? i personally enjoyed jarhead quite a lot, the cinematography was amazing, the performances good (jaimie foxx has loads or screen charisma, that squishy face dude was suitably unpleansant and gyllenhaal made swofford at least 2 dimensional, if not quite 3), and it had the unique-ish diemsion of portraying soldiers getting violent and irrational because they couldn't fight, rather than because they are fighting.

but, all this said, as it has roughly the same narrative structure as full metal jacket (boot camp, fucking around at war, protagonist survives) it suffers by comparison. I wont got into all the details as to why i think full metal jacket is superior (too boring, wrong thread really), but which film did you prefer?

If pressed to choose, I'd choose Jarhead. However, I think that choosing one over the other is a relatively arbitrary judgement because I'll be naturally inclined to choose the one that reminds me of the best 5 years of my life.

ooh rah, as i'm led to believe they say.
