Honestly, instead of buying a bunch of random recommendations, as someone who works in the music biz, I think no one will disagree that any Cold Chillin' (The record label) artists/greatest hits is worth its weight in gold:

Craig G,

Big Daddy Kane

Marley Marl

Masta Ace

Kool G Rap & DJ Polo

MC Shan

Biz Markie

All Cold Chillin' artists,. They have a greatest hits album too, chock-full of classics.

^^^im pretty ignorant in this topic

i'm just after music from when the beats were still fresh and funky.

and like someone said earlier when MCs were real rather than posers.

for instance in the last ten/15 years i have really dug ATCQ, De La's earlier stuff, PE, some buckshot, madlib, deltron, edan so i am looking for similarly inspiring old and fresh stuff

Older funk/soul stuff:

Gil Scott-Heron

Skullsnaps (recorded in like 72, but only released last year - this is THE SHIT!)

Meters

Herbie Hancock ("Head Hunters" and "Fat Albert Rotunda" are real funky)

Early 90's hip-hop (personally I enjoy the sound of this era of hip-hop the most, more jazzy than funky tho, but still damn fresh!)

A Tribe Called Quest

The Pharcyde (check out "Labcabincalifornia")

Gang Starr (early to mid releases like "moment of truth" or "step in the arena")

Common (anything but "Electric Circus" which sounds pretty different to his normal style).

Oh, and if you're after some awsome funk that rocks out you should grab "The Live Mix 2" by Breakestra. It's like 70 minutes of straight continuous funk covers. Really good CD to introduce you to some classics.

Half of those aren't really "old school" but good none the less. If guess if you want good 90's hip-hop obviously add Wu-Tang to that list, as well as Onyx...."Shut em' Down" is the shit. Gangstarr, Nas "Illmatic".........
