Japan Tourist Visa

Recommended Posts

In one of my stints over there (a bit longer than 6months) I was on a tourist visa. Left to Korea, which reset the 90 bit. Towards the end of that 2nd 90 days, I submitted paperwork for visa extension, which was granted pending some final stuff to fill out at the immigration office. Had an appointment, blew it off. Was leaving the country about 2 weeks after my visa expired, emmigration caught it, made me pay the extension fee, and yadda yadda yadda, I made it no problem. Caught a warning, but I've been back a few times since, so I don't think I was blacklisted or anything.

However, you looking to repeat this like 5 or 6 times, so your results may vary.......

Japan is totally lenient in all regards and they probably will just smile and wave you on at the airport. This happens to me all the time. Since Im a foreigner in Japan its cool. They have laws, but they dont really apply to non-Japanese, and really, Japanese pretty much welcome all foreign people into the country with open arms. If you want to stay indefinitely it shouldn't be that much of a problem either, they love the diversity that outsiders bring.

our nameless ex-superfuture tech director ended up locked up in detention for a week at shinagawa for overstaying and escorted directly to narita in shackles. i have plenty of friends who got kicked out. one had been there for over 12 years and rocked up to renew his visa 2 days late and they required so much paperwork and interviews with his employers etc for him to extend that he decided to leave anyway... then again, i had a flatmate who lived there on a tourist visa for a decade; had a car; [no licence] a business, apartment and everything else... but she was french...[which explains a lot]

you're kidding right? when it comes to immigration homies don't fuck around. one time someone stayed over their study abroad visa by a day and he was detained at the airport and blacklisted from entering the country for a few years. as for the laws while in the country though you're totally right.

The Temple of Jawnz is gonna be doing this, later this year. Just tons of vacations overseas to make it look legit, I guess.

you could probably swing it though since you're korean...then again, that may be a strike against you too.

Both members of the TOJ will probably be getting Japanese-y hairdos and blending into our landscape, belying those little American passports in our jawn pockets.

I can't say that we will be keeping a low profile in Japan though...

my coworker is banned from Japan for 5 years because our employer misfiled for a 1 year work visa instead of a 2 year and nobody noticed. Was caught on the way back from vacationing in Thailand. I think her speaking fluent Japanese did the opposite of helping in this case and she should have just played the dumb gaijin card.

Ever known anyone to overstay their 90 day tourist visa in Japan? Is there a way to extended it in Japan? Basically looking for a way to get there quick and without sponsor and stay for a year.

Is this totally a stupid idea?

marry some country bitch. get into her family register. i think i'm turning japanee i think i turning japanese i really thinks so. then just run away after the year cause you still have your own last name in america or whereever the fuck you b from, you gaijin.

I read some blog about some black dude who did that. Ventured into Japan, ended up dating some J-chick for like 2 years which then resulted in the parents finding out and not wanting the daughter to go near the dude.

Dude ended up staying in Japan for another 10 years and didn't get booked.

ichigo,

no hate, but i fail to the relevance of some black dude dating some jap bitch for like 2 years if they didn't even get married. what does this have to do with getting a work or spousal visa?

there are actually many black dudes staying on illegal in japland. they are usually the ones who speak fucked up ebonics and japanese. the ones who invite u to parties or try to sell u fubus. that's what they do. and flips work at ramen shops.

do British passports still get 6 month tourist visas?

don't know exactly, but most western passports are 3 for tourists and can usually get extensions.

No hate taken man.

I just thought I'd throw it out there since you were on the topic of picking up a J-chick. I figured it wasn't relevant since most of the posters are curious about the risk of staying in Japan for too long. I was just mainly responding to your post in particular, not so much the entire topic.

It's probably what I'll end up doing in the ending since I don't want to end up taking risks which could cost me. When the time comes though I'll look more into it.

My intentions were to at least stay a year or so depending on what goes on at the time. Finding a place is probably going to be the most arduous task though since I'm totally unfamiliar with the way things are conducted down in Japan. I've done a fair bit of research pertaining to some of the laws and what not, but haven't really dug deep into renting out apartments, etc.

All of this won't be happening until after I graduate college anyway, but gathering info early is essential.

I wasn't fined, I just had to pay the extension fee. I think it was 4500 yen or something. I'd already sourced out my big bills, so they made me pay by visa at Duty Free, which was kinda odd.

Only pain was waiting in the immigration/customs office after being 'caught'. Saw some entertaining arguments, and one of the few fist fights I've witnessed in country. Much hilarity ensuing from different groups of people yelling at each other in mutually incomprehensible languages.

  • 2 weeks later...

for the record (as has been said), overstaying without prior permission is a stupid idea. i know more than one person who has been banned from visiting for some time after being caught overstaying.

it takes like a day to go down and get your shit extended, worth it.

op: you won't last a year on the tourist visa alone, even with an extension. they're cracking down on the korea shit.

i've been here just under 4 months on a working holiday visa and am going back to aus in a week. i have pretty much wasted it as you can only ever get one but its piss easy to get if you're outside the US. i think the only requirement is basically to be under 30 as jmatsu said.
