*There are not nearly enough appearances of Nas on people's lists. Anyone with Jay-Z instead of Nas on any top emcee list is probably not going to like many of these choices because, well, they have no idea what the fuck it is they're talking about.

top ten heavy hitters, order in but particular no:

A-Butta

Black Thought

Doom

Ghostface

Breeze Brewin

MosDef

Kool G Rap

Biggie

Dove (De La)

NAS.

CONTEMPORARY (BACKPACK) CREW

mos/talib/pharoah/common/blackthought- i would say these guys are pretty close in how they have come up and obviously how they have collaborated.

Rakim

the b-i-g d a double d y k-a-n-e!

MC Ricky D- no doubt the best narrator

BuckShot The 5 Ft MC

Posdnous makes the heads get loose

MF Doom, mad trife.

Busta/LONS days- peep syntax error!

Q-tip/Low End Theory days

*Highly subejective list, but imho chuck d, krs(bdp), j-hova, nas, big, raekwon, meth, ghost, snoop, cube (Amerikkkas most wanted), all deserve a space- maybe in between the others....

Rakim

Kool G

Ras Kass

Slick Rick

Mikah 9

Nas

KRS

Run DMC

Prince Po and Pharoah

Snoop

I think Beggie, Emmynem, Jazey, and Pac are all overrated, highly

And, Ice Cube was top five in 1990-92, not anymore though. Not even close.

And lastly, LL cool J deserves some sort of honorary award for longevity and general maintenance of skill even in the face of complete irrelevance.
