Chinese New Year Day is the day where chinese people avoid Chinatown and goto Vegas and AC.

Yo this is true. I know asian seniors who are crazy strict about everything in life but damn they will play slots until they keel up and die. Apparently AC charges some kind of 30% tax on slot payouts to ppl over 60 and my friends grandma made bank on a hustle where she'd buy out everyone else's slot wins for 10% more than the post-tax casino payout and then get her grandson to cash the vouchers, avoid the tax and netting 20% every time.

She's like 80 something but OG asians always got the hustle in mind.

Almost all Taiwanese people consider themselves separate from the Chinese. I am pretty sure it goes for the people in Hong Kong who don't want to be associated with mainlanders.

Basically nobody wants to be considered chinese unless you are from China.

Why is this? I'm sick of Taiwanese elitism... so ALL MY COUSINS FUCK OFF

I've read a little about CNY celebration and Red envelopes. Do couples give each other small gifts? What is common?

In china relationships don't mean shit. It's all about the generational respect and we just got no need for traditions involving man/woman bonds.

If anything CNY = the one weekend you pretend that you don't have/want a young ass mistress and your wife pretends she's not miserable raising your kid to get into a good high school while the in laws trash each other over money.

hah, nah.

my mom's grandpa's family was manchurian elite, ran to taiwan. I'm theoretically part barbarian, ha.

lots of rich 'former' shanghainese here too.

but yes, "elite fukienese" is quite a bad oxymoron. jesus christ.

on point

pleasantly surprised to have received some red packets this year. but yeah you can feel the shift in the economy, or maybe it's the weather (coldest/bleakest fucking 2 days in Hong Kong that I can remember in forever), streets were relatively quiet compared to last year. some entire blocks just shut down in some kowloon backalleys.

Dooooo it! Dooo IT!

Happy Chinese New Years SUPERFUTUREEEEE!

Alright.

So here are a few things my mom told me as a child, I can't validify them but I think most are generally accepted. Here: No white on Chinese New Years, wear red or yellow, be joyful, eat noodles, eat dumplings, eat nian gao(sticky cakes), clean the house, ke tuo(kneel and grovel), greet everyone and wish them well[Gong shi gong shi xing nian hao SUFU!], eat red beans, eat fish, always have leftovers, wear new clothes, take a shower

I'm sure there was more but I can't recall them now.

Truth:

Also real Chinese New Year is 15 days long, but it's not celebrated that long usually in the US.

The first 9 days are said to be the most vital.

The first day people welcome the deities from the divine as well as heaven and traditionally you visit senior members of the family. This is also when Buddhists try not to eat meat because it will ensure longevity, this is also the time people receive Hon Bao, which was originally presented as a wedding gift.

I could go on. :P
