why gold?

i was thinking about trying to switch fields to get into green energy. of course, if mccain/palin get voted in, this could be a complete waste of time, as they'll be pushing nuclear energy and oil drilling, so i figured i'd at least make sure the dems get into office beforehand...but if they do, with the kind of government backed research funding they're talking about, it seems like it could be a worthwhile investment. plus, say we do create a great renewable energy source...it'd be like getting in on microsoft's middle management before they blew up and everyone became millionaires.
