i've recently come back from hong kong with a few new vcd/dvds:

-one night in mongkok

-the warlords

-mad detective

-protege

and many of the older hk/asian movies are classics:

- young and dangerous series

- once upon a time in china series

- infernal affairs series

- god of gamblers and the return

anyone else got any recs for essential hk cinema?

i'm partial to hk gangster flicks!

pretty much everything by johnnie to (the mission, ptu) and fruit chan (made in hong kong, which is to me one of the most underrated chinese films ever) . basically the last 2 good filmmakers in hong kong. and of course new wave from the late 70s/80s, like patrick tam (half the reason wong kar wai is overrated; the other half being christopher doyle), tsui hark, etc. and new new wave ie mid-late 90s gangster films (slow fade, casino, tragic fantasy, etc).

John Woo would be in this category as well yea?

If so, anything he did in the 80's-early 90's with Chow Yun Fat (A Better Tomorrow 1&2, The Killer, Hard Boiled), plus Bullet In The Head. Most of Chow Yun Fat's earlier (pre-American crossover) Triad/"gun-fu" films have something to offer..."City On Fire" being one of the most interesting due to it's inspiration on Quentin Tarantino in making Reservoir Dogs (he admittingly lifted elements of its plot for RD). If my memory serves me correct, Ringo Lam directed that...as well as Full Contact (with Chow Yun right after Hard Boiled in '92). A Better Tomorrow 3 wasn't by John Woo...but it stars Chow Yun and Anita Mui...I still haven't peeped it fully, but I've heard good things about it.

I second Tsui Hark...he actually did A Better Tomorrow 3...for more recent films by him, I recommend The Blade ('95), a remake of One Armed Swordsman...and Time And Tide ('00), a newer take on the "gun fu" genre. I remember also enjoying The Big Heat ('88).

Johnnie To is another good director to me. Fulltime Killer and Running Out of Time, both with Andy Lau, were thoroughly entertaining...2000-01 era. THe Longest Nite was cool shit...starring Tony Leung and Lau Ching Wan.

Fallen Angels will be mentioned in this thread I'm sure. Another goody with Leon Lai.

Uhm...hope that helps?

Whatever you do...make sure you watch Story Of Ricky if you wanna die laughing at an atrociously terrible (great) live remake of a classic (gore-ridden = great) anime...Riki-Oh.

^great suggestions from everyone so far.

i for one love gangster flicks (city on fire, ptu, infernal affairs)

but if you don't enjoy those, here are some alternatives

stanley kwan's "rouge" and "center stage"

peter chan's "comrades:almost a love story"

i'm not a huge wong kar wai fan but i liked his segment of Eros alot, out of the 3 shorts (the other two by antonioni and soderberg) wong's is the best.

it's call "the hand" and worth watching if only for the sight of gong li giving the most melancholy handjob in the world.

^Yes!!

if you find you like WKW's style, check out Chungking Express, In The Mood for Love, Days of Being Wild, Ashes of Time, etc... FA is still my fav of the bunch though (obviously)

i liked the gang/mafia movie "Election". "SPL" (sha po lang) is worth mentioning too, cant go wrong with modern day Donnie Yen x Sammo Hung.

if you like gangster/action/gunplay movies, watch "A Hero Never Dies", another one by Johnnie To, starring Leon Lai and Lau Ching wan. "Fulltime Killer" was kinda cool too.

for gunplay, John Woo obviously. a lot of classics were already mentioned. try "Bullet in the Head" (tony leung, jacky cheung).

Running on Karma, weird and interesting story, kinda funny.

not action, but i really liked Comrades Almost a Love Story.. its more of a sentimental film, learn something about that period of time, great homage to Teresa Teng. one of my favorite films w/ maggie c.

Hollywood Hong Kong was interesting, if you like Fruit Chan's stuff.

i didnt like Cecilia Cheung in "One Nite in Mongkok", but i liked her in "Lost in Time" (drama)

if you like wuxia, "Seven Swords" came out a couple years ago. i thought it was pretty cool.

for comedy, anything from Stephen Chow

other mentions.. Rouge, July Rhapsody... i'll think of more later..

I dont know about a sex tape, but there's definitely pics. The ones with Cecilia Cheung are particularly disturbing :(

yeah!!!! for real,

apparently the sex tapes were released to some forum but taken down quickly (that's coming from the new york times) and i haven't seen them anywhere...

if anyone has a lead, please let me know ;)

I saw Chungking Express for the first time last week in a film class, really enjoyed it. The only other WKW film I've seen is 2046, going to track down some of his other stuff.

I had the chance to go to HK in the late 90's, and watching their cinema is a way for me to re live that experience.

aside from the movies mentioned, i really enjoyed men suddenly in black

a spoof on the typical hk spy/gangster movie

i didnt like the sequel as much as the original, but both were pretty funny

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0380291/

i saw it right after watching infernal affairs for the first time and loved it

if you liked Chungking Express, you HAVE to watch Fallen Angels, its kinda the psuedo-sequel to CKE with some similar elements, just a little darker...

if u liked 2046, watch "In the Mood for Love" as sidneylo mentioned. if you liked ITMFL, then watch "Days of Being Wild". thats kind of the trilogy, (dobw -> itmfl -> 2046) although the stories are not directly related, its all the same characters.

Yeah, I've been downloading DVD rips of Fallen Angels, ITMFL, and Days of Being Wild for a few days. Hopefully they'll finish this week.

After that I'm going to start getting into more crime stuff suggested here, haven't seen much besides Infernal Affairs and John Woo's earlier work.

  • 4 months later...

Watched DOBW today. My friends think WKW is overrated and keep telling me to try better stuff.

So, I'm taking their advice.

About to start the Fruit Chan trilogy

edit: my made in hong kong subs stopped working at the 44min mark. great.

haven't decided after that.

Any help's appreciated.

And, yea, Beast Cops was solid.
