I have been messing around with some sand casting and pewter smelting lately, hopefully will be making my own hardware in the near future.

That's really exciting! I get so mad about the scarcity of good solid brass hardware that I often daydream about learning to cast my own brass hardware. Some day, maybe.

Here's a little lanyard I made:

nothing special, especially when you consider the recent posts.

I just got tired of carrying around a lanyard I made of hemp so I redid an old coach lanyard I had and repurposed the hardware for this, same design and everything too.

my friend does a bit a sand casting, and he let me mess around with his stuff. its not easy! put pewter is a bit easier cause is melts at around 600 degrees. so you can melt it with a cast iron pan, propane torch or charcoal BBQ. and there are some really cool high temp plastic molds you can make to re-produce any object.

look up "pewter figurine kits" on google and you will find a multitude a websites. you could just take one of those cool new fish hook key chains you got from japan and make a mold. i bet you could produce 4 to 8 hooks in a hour.

Aspanol : the size flat on a table not including the snap part is 8in x 4in

tbg - casting your own hardware would be seriously cool. its something ive looked into but frankly its way down the road for me atm.

Information for informations sake though a friend did recommend the delft casting system to me, like sandcasting but using clay. Meant to be really suitable for small timers like me who doesnt want to invest too much space/money into the operation.

anyways tgb - best of luck with it and please post pictures of the outcome! ciao

Wanted to show this here. This is obviously not my creation, but I thought it might act as inspiration for those of you with talent (unlike myself). This is an old Swiss rucksack made of salt and pepper canvas and leather straps. The leather was black and completely unbendable when I got it, but some Skidmore's softened it up nicely. p><p><img src=Picture 567 by ray.wendolowski, on Flickr[/img]img]<img src=Picture 563 by ray.wendolowski, on Flickr[/img]

If anyone feels this is an inappropriate place to post this just tell me and I'll remove it.

Ray, Im glad you posted this. I really dont like rucksacks at all but im in the market for a new bag (going back to college after years) and for some reason this ruck REALLY caught my attention. I actually just did some research and I found numerous sights saying things along the lines of "if you dont like strurdy and overbuilt bags, this bag is not for you." So what this means to me is this bag is a beast.

Not to mention they are cheap. I have found a few for about 50 bucks. I think Im going to try to get one even though a ruck isnt my cup of tea. Thanks again for sharing.

Yeah, they are dirt cheap, and it's basically a tank. But make sure you find one with the straps, as they are the only thing hard to come by.

I had one of these back in high school. The leather straps are easy to replace and they last forever. If you look around you can get them for as low as $15.

I really like this Corter. The machine stitching is nice and subtle keeping attention on the inlay. But I still like how the rest is hand stitched.

thank you! that's what I'm kinda trying for.

started doing leather keepers on belts, had to figure out how to make them in bulk!
