Music:

-the rave/eagles club: venue for bands of middle-high noteriety. ticket prices are generally reasonable ($15-30)

-2401 west wisconsin avenue

http://www.therave.com/

-pabst riverside theater: i personally enjoy seeing live music performances the most here. the theater is sizeable, yet small enough to retain a somewhat intimate setting for the audience. the sound system and acoustics are much better here than the rave, and many popular independent artists play this venue.

-located in downtown milwaukee: 116 west wisconsin ave

-summerfest: annual weeklong summer boozefest featuring sleazy come-ons, hyperbolic amounts of public drunken stupidity, as well as acts that range from the currently popular to classic rock and polka; from Lupe Fiasco and Spoon to Poison and the Steve Miller Band. located on the henry maier lakefront festival grounds

http://www.summerfest.com/

-valhalla, shorewood legion hall, the vault, 8th note cafe, the breakfast nook, probably a few other venues im forgetting at the moment: local venues, basement shows, the kind of places where local and unknown acts play. mosh at your own risk. most of these shows end up listed here at some point:

Other/Misc activities:

Coffee: local fair trade brewing company Alterra Coffee roasters make magnificent coffee. take a mug or a bag of the "punch in the face" blend home with you. locations throughout downtown milwaukee and surrounding areas. lakefront cafe located inside former milwaukee river flushing station has the best atmosphere

http://alterracoffee.com/

-rochambo is a great place for coffee or tea and a smoke. open until midnight with an agreeable, hip clientele and frequently rotates its gallery with the works of milwaukee artists.

-located in milwaukee's east side: 1317 east brady street

Bars/Beers: While its not difficult to find a bar in milwaukee, there are some local breweries and beers that are worth a mention, as well as some bars/clubs that offer a bit more for a young jetset crowd than the typical milwaukee hole-in-the-wall dive. there are many, many bars in milwaukee, it would take forever to include them all here but here are my highlights:

-stonefly brewery: frequently hosts performances by popular independent musicians, though they only serve their own microbrews, they are excellent for the price

-located in the riverwest milwaukee area: 735 east center street

http://www.myspace.com/stoneflybrewery

-hooligan's superbar: two story bar with the largest selection of microbrews and reputable for having a bloody good bloody mary. excellent place to watch a packer game

-2017 east north avenue

http://www.hooliganssuperbar.com/

-milwaukee ale house: ale house's delicious on-site malt ales make for a fantastic compliment to their lunch or dinner menus, sometimes feature live music performances

-233 north water street

-the nomad world pub: favorite item on the menu here is $5 for a beer, a shot and a cigarette. expansive list of micro local and import brews, wines and tobaccos. great place to watch soccer as well

-located on milwaukee's east side: 1401 east brady street

milwaukee art museum: worth a visit just to see the calatrava architecture itself. rotation of exhibits are always interesting and expansive in subject/medium. past exhibits include milwaukee neon light artist bruce nauman, masters of american comics, german expressionism

-located on milwaukee's lakefront downtown: 700 north art museum drive

http://mam.org/

discovery world at pier wisconsin: stop by discovery world on your way out from the art museum. range of cutting edge exhibits about technology, the environment, engineering as well as a number of workshops on things like screenprinting or toymaking. if you stop by in the summer, have a look at milwaukee's three masted schooner, the denis sullivan

-just south of milwaukee art museum: 500 north harbor drive

http://www.discoveryworld.org/

hookah: milwaukee has five places to enjoy a good hookah:

-2 sweet international: come early or on a weekday for hookah unless you like waiting in line behind an enormous crowd of high schoolers

-2128 east locust street

-shi chai cafe: great tea selection to compliment your hookah session

-832 east center street

-mantra lounge: great cocktail selection to compliment hookah, diverse dj music nights

-1905 east north avenue

-epicure lounge: unremarkable, infrequent live music, limited drink menu

-1113 michigan avenue

-casablanca: overpriced hookahs ($16!), decent middle eastern cuisine

-728 east brady street
