Finally pulled the trigger and bought a pair of 301S. Stoked because the new ones have a selvedge outer seam.

I'm pretty new to raw denim but do own a couple of pairs of Iron Hearts -- 634s in size 34 and SE/IH collab 633s in size 36.  Both fit well in the waist -- the sanforized 634s didn't shrink too much while the 633s shrank significantly.

 

It looks like the rise is quite a bit higher on the 1955, which sounds perfect.  My question is whether to go with size 34 or 36?  Suggestions appreciated.  Also, is the 1955 denim sanforized?

The denim on the 1955 and 634s is going to be the same as far as shrinkage (not really any).  In my opinion youll have an issue with the Rise 11in in the 634 and 13.2 in the 1955 both in size 34's .  Generally i find that when i get a longer rise my jeans sit higher up on my hips and i can go with a smaller waist.  But thats just my body type. I cant tell you what size will fit perfectly in the 1955, but you may consider sizing down one if the waist in your 634's sit at a wider place on your body than the longer rise of the 1955 would.

The new 1955-UHR is UNsanforized so its going to shrink more than your sanforized 634. I don't have experience with unsanforized IH but in other pairs, you usually get back any shrink in the waist but shrink in the length is there to say. With that in mind, you probably want a raw waist measurement that fits fairly snug at first but you will probably lose a little bit of rise (1/2" maybe?) and a bit of length and it wont come back...

Appreciate the input.  If a manufacturer makes a size 35 (e.g., Samurai), that's usually the size for me.  With Iron Heart, sanforization seems to be the key.  The size 34 unsanforized 634s is a little tight in the waist, but fine (after several washes).  The size 36 IH/SE collaboration 633s is also fine in the waist -- given much more shrinkage.  If the 1955-UHR is unsanforized, I'm inclined to go with the 36.  But it's tough to figure in advance given how high the rise is on the 1955.

 

Is it possible to buy both (34, 36) and return one? -- after 3-4 washes, of course  ;-)

This might have beem asked before but I've had my eyes set on a pair of 555's for a while now, and after checking some charts on the iron heart site and blue in green to compare them to my favorite pair of jeans fit wise, the Skull 5010's, I'm still a bit worried about the smaller thigh measurements on the 555's, whixch are a bit tighter. Does anyone have experience with that that could possible give some input on the matter? Much appreciated.

I ordered two pairs of Iron Heart 1955-UHR 21 oz. jeans in sizes 34 and 36 -- long rise, lots of room in the hips and thighs.  The 34 is snug in the waist but fine everywhere else.  The 36 is a little loose but comfortable in the waist but BIG everywhere else.  I would imagine these will shrink some since they're unsanforized and then there may be some stretch back.  Assuming I keep a pair, which should it be?

have you asked Giles at Iron Heart? my guess is they'll both stretch back to their raw size after soak & some wear, it's just a question of how snug they are now and whether you don't mind things being snug at first. I've got some 555-02's (raw 18oz) and some 301s (sanforized 21oz). The 555's shrank less than an inch but stretched back and then some, whilst the 301s were tight at first but eventually stretched out just under 2 inches over the years.

my guess is you could probably get away with the 34's if you wore them a little bit pre-soak, and then cold soaked them as that would facilitate less shrinkage at first...

I think you're right okisan.  Giles mentioned that the 34 will probably work fine, as long I as I treat them gently and don't throw them in the dryer.  They'll shrink with soaking and washing, but then likely stretch back to raw or even slightly more.  I'll sleep on it, try them once more in the morning, and make a decision this weekend.  Appreciate the input.

Quick question about the Iron Heart 555-01s: would a soak make much difference in the waist? I haven't worn them all that often and when I put them on this morning I noticed they were a little loose compared to my other jeans - nothing a belt doesn't fix, but they'll only stretch further unless I soak them, right? I haven't done anything to them yet in terms of soaking / washing.

I had a pair of 555-01's that were a little loose. Tried to shrink (hot soaked, air dried) no shrinkage occured. It stretched and i wore a belt.

Appreciate the input on the 34 vs. 36 1955-UHR's.  I cold soaked the size 34 for 2.5 hours and they came out perfect.  As long as they don't shrink too much more with future washing, these should be just right.  Good to have some higher rise Iron Hearts.
