Young Designers United presents Haute Couture at the Van Gogh Museum

Exhibition "Barcelona 1900" interpreted by YDU’s young fashion talents on November 2, 2007

Young Designers United (YDU), a collective of young and upcoming fashion designers, has been exclusively invited to perform an Haute Couture Show inspired by the new exhibition "Barcelona 1900" at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The Exhibition

Until January 20 2008, the Van Gogh Museum presents the landmark exhibition "Barcelona 1900", which celebrates the astonishing transformation of the vibrant city Barcelona between 1880 and 1909. In this period Barcelona underwent an impressive architectural development and flourished socially and artistically. The exhibition provides an insight into a city which continues to intrigue visitors and inspire artists and architects to this day. Some 200 works of art including paintings, drawings and sculpture and also furniture, jewellery, scale models, films, stage scenery and mosaics reveal the remarkable breadth of artistic creation.

Evolution of an Haute Couture Show

Since weeks 9 designers who are part of Young Designers United, and one guest designer from Barcelona are working day and night on amazing Haute Couture dresses and the sewing machines are red-hot. The creations are based on a preview of the exhibition that was given by a curator of the Van Gogh Museum. The challenge is to interpret the essence of the exhibition "Barcelona 1900" into contemporary Haute Couture. The collections are thus reflecting not only the background and concepts, but also the spirit and mood and contrasts of "Barcelona 1900" and were inspired by the fascinating developments in art, architecture and design at that period in Barcelona.

The Designers

YDU selected Yosha by Scarlet Arrow and Amber Rose, Heidi Long, Guten Appetit, Pricci by Priscilla Reynolds, Jürgen Christian Hörl, Amm Couture, Joy.c and Dress’d by Ellen Benders, and invited the Spanish Designer Luka to interpret this stunning exhibition.

The Setting

YDU has invited Valentina Lacmanovic, a dancer from Barcelona, who will open the show together with the French singer Erik Karol (Countertenor and Baritone). He has been the singer and principal character of the famous Cirque du Soleil Show "Dralion" in the US and Europe for more than 5 years, highlighted by performances in London at the Royal Albert Hall. Erik Karol is just starting the production of his solo album, written in English, Spanish and French.
