recently upgraded to a LAMY studio having lost my safari somewhere

i like the added weight and i appreciate that it is a bit slimmer

fits into the pen pocket of my shirts

Would you say it's better? I'm looking for a nice writing utensil and I'd like to get it right on the first try. Which nib did you have on your safari?

well yeah, the studio is a better pen but i fear when i lose it, the pain will be greater

i had an extra fine nib on my safari, i went up to a fine nib for the studio

a tip: don't lend your pen to anyone, even for a moment; most people don't know how to use a fountain pen and will bend your nib out of shape; grrrrrrrr

Ugh, I had bought a bunch of them they were good at the beginning, but I stopped using them for a month, and started using them again and they all stopped working :S.

yeah the liners tend to dry up if not in use...there's another brand I used to use that was even worse :(

good thing is they're fairly cheap and easy to come across.

the studio is undoubtley nicer but they have the same actual nib so in terms of writing performance the only difference will be the nicer feel of the studio to hold

how difficult is it to write with a fountain pen anyway?

Not hard...unless you're a leftie. The ink takes a bit longer to dry than a normal pen, so you have to be careful not to smudge it, which is more difficult for lefties. I find its easier for some reason to use catridge-fountain pens rather than then old fashioned filler'up kinds.

isn't it also less of a mess to use cartridge over fill-ups?

Oh definitely. I guess the ease of writing also depends on the quality of the pen, and the type of ink used. Some inks just don't flow as nicely, and some of the crap quality pens use nibs that just don't release the ink as nicely. Not that all the good pens are expensive though...Faber Castell makes an inexpensive pen (around $50 I think) that writes beautifully, even though it uses a steel nib, where the pricey ones typically use a precious metal, which is often thought of as the sign of a quality nib.

I don't own any but one day when the need arises..

Caran d'Ache Madison set of rollerball, fountain and mechanical pencil..

As I prefer a thin heavy style..

I did once use an Omas that I liked a lot despite how wide it was, also an old Montblanc that must have been twice my age.. Imo Swiss or Italian (maybe even German) pens are the best..

I would like to try a Lamy.. They look nice

edit: sorry I should mention it's good to check out antique pen dealers.. maybe.. I kinda like the older ones better..

old pens look nice, but i read that older pens normally don't work with the newer inks.

i have a keyto sign pen. they're pretty cool. one side black, the other grey. i don't understand why it's grey, but it's convenient when i was drawing with it.

Ken if you buy the right Ink it's not a problem at all.. Just don't cheap out to much :)

Was looking around last night at the montblancs and figured it was the classic 149 that I used.. I would have to take a look again to see how old but it was defs 70ish. Nice pen..

I was also looking at some nice thin steel Lamy mechanical pencils.. Any recommendations? I like something heavy.. Older (but still can be found easily)preferred..
