Allright..

There have been a lot - too many - new threads lately regarding which pair of denims to buy when new to this whole topic.

So here's the thread that contains all the information - at once.

I am gonna try to keep this as light - and as thourough - as possible.

CHAPTER II

Decide on the denim

A 17oz left hand twill or a streaky Eternal 18 oz are probably not the best choice for your first pair.

Try to keep it simple.

Anything in between 13 and 14,5 oz should be perfect for your first pair.

CHAPTER III

Sizing

Make sure you know your TRUE waist size.

Don't be vain - it will be punished.

CHAPTER IV

Setting up your flat for dry denim

Check your bathroom.

Do you have a tub ?

If not - buy one of the Baby bath buckets...

istockphoto_1600855_cute_baby_in_a_tub_2.jpg

You will need a place to soak your raw denim

Do you have a place to hang your dripping wet jeans ?

Get a hook - place in or above tub or shower...

Check your furniture.

Anything light or bright or new - like a sofa or your favorite chair -

Buy a blanket - you will hate the stains raw denim leaves while still bleeding...

Get a phat wallet

Okay, but say I already went to all that work and have a simple, unadorned pair of regular straight selvedge denim that I love to death and are fading nicely. Now addicted, where do I go with my SECOND pair? Do I get a slimmer cut to compliment the slight bagginess of the first? Should I go with black? Or do I want something flashier, with lots of details or some unique point to them? With winter approaching, should I try a heavier weight? Where are my priorities?

I need some experience. I don't want yet to just be breaking in a second pair that differs only slighty from the first. What do the veterans think is the killer combo?

CHAPTER VI

Get a hobby

Once you start wearing your dry denim - you might get obsessed with it.

To prevent this - find something funny and useful to do in your free time.

Biking , fishing - skating - all up to you.

istockphoto_3011724_bmx_biker.jpg

The fact is- doing stuff will give you better fades and results - way better than sitting around and staring at your jeans, anyway.

CHAPTER VII

WASHING

Regardless of the above - there will come a time when you need to wash your pants.

Especially if you have a hobby.

Get all natural soap - Dr. Bronners is highly recommended.

Dr_Bronner

Important - 99% soap - no bleach.

Make sure to wash when your pants stink - there's no way around it.

For more information on washing - check Chapter I - and the stated encyclopedia

CHAPTER VIII

Family and friends

If you're going to do this, involve as many people as possible.

It will make you feel good being able to talk about your jeans - trust me.

CHAPTER IX

FURTHER PURCHASES

Try to stick to your first pair of dry denim for at least 6 months.

If you did everything as said in Chapter I - VIII - you should be happy with your first pair.

Only if you succesfully finished the first 6 month should you buy another pair.

STOP SHITTING UP BEATLE'S THREAD.

Most of you never bother answering any quesitons in the SQT anyway, so what the fuck do you care if its already in the Encyclopaidia or stickied elsewhere? For those of us who take the time to deal with all the newbies, this would be a great link to send them so the same questions don't have to be repeadetly answered.

Tweedles, if you read this, maybe you could delete all the useless posts in this thread. ;) (including mine)

Yeah - normally you should answer all your basic questions by reading this one - and if something particular pops up that needs to be answered - go for the small question thread.

This is to avoid "I'm new her - I want to buy my first pair of denim " and similar / crappy threads....

Then maybe this guide should be appended to the beginning of the SQT. That way someone could read it, then just quick reply any questions. Then, the SQT could be a single thread to refer new people to. Maybe its title could be revised with a big "READ ME FIRST" also.

I'm waiting for mods to decide what to do with it.....

I think a beginner's guide is a great idea - sorry but I just think that having it separate from the question thread could be redundant.

Even if it was placed at the beginning of the SQT, it wouldn't be read because no one actually reads the first page.

Hence why the title would need to be revised to encourage people to click on the thread title, rather than just the last page. Posters who don't pay attention to that, probably wouldn't pay attention to another "Read me first" thread. Otherwise, they'd probably read the guide, come up with a question and create a new post in which to ask it.

Anyways, I think superdenim has gotten considerably cleaner particularly since the introduction of the SQT. As nice as it'd be to pre-empt all the useless threads, I don't think that's possible.
