Long distance running saved my life...

been running quite a bit lately and need to get myself some new shoes.

Does anyone have the new Asics Kayano 16 or Asics Gel 3010? Trying to decide between the two

I try and run at least 4 miles a day with Nike Free 3.0. Just got a pair of Asics Piranha... Super light, you might want to look into them...

does anyone break up their running with other cardio exercises?

atm I run about 5km do some chin ups/sit etc ups then run another 5km. my increasing level of fitness means that this isnt giving me the same kind of work out as it was.

so just wondering if anyone does any particular exercises/circuits to supplement their running? anything that kind of "goes" with running?

i realise that i could just go harder or longer. but i feel like my running rate is solid and im not keen on running a greater distance.

^ That looks beautiful. How do you find it on your legs hopping over rocks as opposed to say running on road/foot path? Must start running my local trails a little. I like the idea of getting them to myself and not seeing another person.

How's everybody's training going? Any races recently? I've been doing a lot of mileage for fun lately, but I've slowed down a little bit on my training.

Anyway, does anybody no a good site to get running gear at a decent price online? I want to get some more shorts and maybe a singlet, but everywhere I've looked either has a crappy selection or shipping prices that are higher than I'd like to pay.

From a training perspective you shouldn't stop your workout. I mean, you're basically training your endurance and by stopping to make a few crunches you disrupt it...

I basically wouldn't recommend pairing these things. When running, your abdominal muscle is being used. So if you want to additionally train it, you should IMO do it in a seperate workout (ideally paired with other body, back and leg exercises).

I am back on track, finally. Went to gym about 3times a week for the last three months, runnig about twice. With the muscles I gained weight which makes running a bit more difficult nowadays but I am looking forward to recover my endurance from "the good days" with more supporting muscles (e.g. less injuries).

Y'all in the northern hemisphere stop running through the middle of winter?

Me and a couple of lads at work are planning to smash out a half-mara in May and then a full later on in the year. Started training for it the last few months - gyming and 2-3 runs/week around 10kms each. pumped.

Been doing squats, leg-press, lunges in the gym - incorporating 1-legged variation with the leg-press and squats. Suggestions on other exercises you guys find useful in the gym?

I live in Washington, DC and it's between 15 and 22 most days. I run about 10 miles a day, and last week did one 30 mile run. Let me just say - it's much easier to do 30 in the fall... It's not even that cold, but it's just much harder to find a rhythm.

This is only my second year of running, so it's kind of been a shock getting out in this weather. I'd say that the essential gear is running pants, a long sleeve shirt, a jacket, gloves, wool socks, and a hat. You should be good. If it's below 0 I might add a base layer.

I now don't have any decent gyms near me, and i haven't had a workout for months - so I decided to go outside and run on pavement for the first time.

Daunting, but i started of pretty well and then it was just a rapid decline. The incline of the road around the corner (run around block concept) fucking killed me.

I'd usually recover and go again, but this almost always ends up in me being sore for a week. so i went home, and i'll go again tomorrow. Feels good though.

I'm looking for decent running shoes, I've got slightly bad knees and need good schock absorption.

Also looking to improve my running form. I've been scaling the internet for various sources on "proper" technique, but there's many schools of thought.

Anybody?

i want to start running, and i'm in a similar boat to dioxic. i have no idea what would be a 'good' shoe for someone starting out. which of these would be best (or if they all suck)? i am totally ignorant/clueless.

are nike generally regarded as the 'best'? asics?

Nike seem to have a divided opinion when it comes to seasoned runners. Some people swear by them but most other people seem to thing they are crap -- probably just snobbishness since they make so much non-specialist junk.

I'd recommend you go to a local independent specialist running store they can give you impartial advice on your running style and suggest which shoes would suit you best. They should record your stride for a few minutes and take it from there.

Personally I've been running in Asics GT2140, Brroks Trance 9 and Asics 1150 for the last few years; over pronation. They're all pretty comfortable but I'd recommend the Asics GT2140 over the rest of them if I had to choose.

Find a shoe that feels good and wear it.

Even though I'm eating the best I ever have in my life, I haven't gone running in like 6 months. It is regularly below 15 degrees here, without wind-chill (not to mention snow covering everything), and I have no money to pay for cold weather gear. Think I'm just going to start braving the cold w/ shorts and a sweat-shirt to get my ass back in gear.

my cold-weather (under 35 degrees fahrenheit) running outfit of choice has always been compression shorts (they seem to insulate/protect the crotch area from the cold better than regular shorts), a base layer of a some kind of non-cotton t-shirt (or under armer if it's really cold), a non-cotton sweatshirt or zip-up thing, mittens (they keep the fingers warmer than gloves) and a winter headband (it seems to shield the ears better from the wind and it allows the rest of my head to ventilate).

What's the general consensus on Nike Free 3.0 for just 2-6 mile runs?

At the moment, I have some basic Asics GT shoes that I believe have enough arch support for my normal arch and a lot of cushion to correct my overpronation.

I know that Free's have little/no arch support, but I'm not sure how it affects correct pronation. Also, I've come to terms that correcting pronation is an important aspect for long term running, so can I get some pointers from some people that may have corrected their own problems?

thanks

i have extrmely severe pronation and ran in the most corrective asics available, the gel evolution, for a few years. i eventually learned though that there is absolutely nothing "wrong" with natural pronation and no reason to correct the body's natural movements, so i gradually worked my way out of corrective footwear. the free 3.0s are prefect for this transition, as they are most minimal frees ever made. i now run in brooks/nike/adidas flats 7 days a week at 70-80mpw.

if you really think you need to "correct" your pronation, though, just wear the asics like you have been and you'll be fine. i would almost advise against such a drastic footwear rotation even for speedwork. unless you're trying to ween yourself off heavily corrective footwear, then just stick with what you've been wearing. or if you have injuries.

Usually around this time of year I train indoors because of my hectic schedule, been only running 20-30 miles a week now instead of the usual 50. Snowboarding takes over the rest of the time so I feel it's a good break from things until the spring.

same thing happened to me man. major creaking and crepitus along with extreme tenderness and swelling on my right achilles and pain to the point where i could hardly walk - been xtraining for a week now and its starting to get better.

on a side note, i picked up the newly released new balance minimus road and got a few solid runs in with them and they are one of the best shoes i've come across in a while. definitely worth checking out http://www.newbalance.com/nb-minimus/ anton krupicka helped design them.

haven't been on a solid running schedule for about 2 months now in order to get in more rigorous weight training and to stay off my bum foot.

went on a ~5k run yesterday afternoon which had me pooped. i really miss this shit!
