anyone have any recommendations for coworking space? (Or cafes I can leech wifi and code/research at?) I'm considering spending the summer in jland, and hate the idea of sitting in an apartment there working.

Moboff seems to run a few, including this cafe. I'm pretty accustomed to only working at coffee shops but I'm not sure it's as socially acceptable...

Free wifi hotspots are difficult to find in Tokyo.

http://www.freespot.com/ for a limited list of free spots.

Hack space. "powered" cafes with free outlets.

Free hotspots (compiled by some du who doesn't have a life. all he does is go to cafes and check for free signal)

One thing I have to warn you. There are VERY few places that provide free outlets. In the US, it's really easy to find power but not in Japland. You can actually get arrested for stealing power without permission (so they say). One thing you have to watch out for: Just because a coffee shop has AC outlets doesn't mean there's wifi access. The converse is true as well. This may be the reason why those 3000-dollar ultraportable laptops with long battery life e.g. panasonic let's note, sell well.

Another option:

You can go to a family mart and use the kiosk to purchase access codes for wifi hotspots.

1) The cheapest and most readily available hotspot service is softbank hotspot. Most fast food joints have softbank routers. I've tried it once at a McDonald's near my house but I couldn't even get online. The access code was valid but I never got to the authorization gateway page.

2) Another option is the NTT hotspot service. Fewer places served but the signal quality is excellent. Most of Tully's locations have this.

Other options:

1) The most reliable one is probably getting a wifi router that's compatible with JCOM or emobile. I have no idea whether foreigners are eligible to receive service. Jcom is cool because you can just get a 30-day 3G access card, pop it into a 3g-to-wifi router and surf the web.

2) I've never tried Wimax so I don't know much about it. Apparently, it's insanely fast. much faster than a typical DSL or cable connection in the US.

Krispy kreme in ebisu garden place has free wifi. I don't think they give a shit how long you stay. You might get fat super fast though.

getting online was such a PITA last year that this time we decided to rent a wimax for our trip, along with a phone. i'll report on how good it is.

jpmp3 looks like it might be down and out - site been hosed for a couple weeks now at least that I've noticed.

I tried to do that whole work remotely thing last year when I was there, but just ended up working out of my apartment. It was kind of depressing, but I have trouble focusing in busy environments and end up just rubbernecking anyways.

If you had a smartphone you could just tether 3G and work at cafes, but you shouldn't really sit there for more than 2 hrs.

Yeah, this is what I do

Tether my iPhone and chill for a couple hours, by the time the battery starts draining it's time to leave anyways

Gonna be attempting to do some domestic travel during Golden Week! I usually make it a point to leave the country, but want to see some friends. Already have everything booked, but how bad are things like Disney or USJ during this time?

disney will be packed this GW

i went a few years ago in GW and it was rammed (4 hour queue for tower of terror), i think this year is gonna be worse as its been closed for so long and i think ppl are trying to do fun things to cheer themselves up during this tough time.

My first choice living arrangement fell through -- any recs for monthly apartment rental? I've checked out all the super gaizin friendly sites, but I don't really "need" a furnished place (I can buy shit there whatever) and even the decently expensive places look like cracked out bottom rung boutique hotels or on the other end of the spectrum, Cleveland Ohio Embassy Suites. Shoot me a PM if you got a hookup.

this may sound like an odd question, but as someone who prefers the japanese cuts and sizes to US ones, i tend to buy a lot of essentials at uniqlo every time i visit Japan. while there are uniqlo stores all over japan (even in narita airport) many of them are quite small and have limited selections. what are the largest uniqlo stores with the largest selections?
