rajio,

reading your posts always makes me feel like i'm in the wrong business. if i could do shit all over, i'd be an investment banker...

Nah, man. Most of guys in the industry are assholes, have no lifes, work 15-18 hour days, work weekends, are work-a-holics. Plus all the women are divorced. At least all the front office women here. Goldman has a implicit requirement that you must work at least 15 hours a day. Plus, bankers are the some of the most un-interesting people you could ever meet. Hedge funds/private equity/venture capital/consulting is where its at....after MBA im gonna start my own company. I hate working for other people.

we should just produce a general japan/tokyo chat theard or some shit to that extent.

herp, can we have a home-party at your aunt's? let's go to happening-bars!

I thought the Tokyo Blog thread was the un-official thread. Then whenever a new Tokyo thread pops up we just end up hi-jacking it...lol.

Yeah, I feel you on that. I was talking to a friend yesterday and he told me the secret to becoming a managing director isn't being smart but being good at company politics. Basically doing the right things so other people will support you and vouch for you when shit hits the fan. No worries man, just don't tarnish your integrity and reputation, cuz those are things you can't take back/change once people build a perception of you...

i've never worked for a huge highprofile company like you do, but does the work environement/dimensions differ alot from outside of japan? not talking about implemented orthodox japanese business practices, but the social settings/connotations of the office...

Not terribly different. The only difference is that for japan-client desks, all the groups operate like a typical japanese company. It's only the bu-chous who have to deal w/ the foreign managers who operate differently. You still have the settai, and group/desk politics, and political manuveuring. Social wise, sometimes its like two different worlds working in the same office, but depending on the group, if its a mix of non-Japanese/Japanese, then not-so-much. I guess its the language barrier that's the most difficult since most of the Japan-client desks can't speak English and the foreigners just don't give a shit to learn as long as they're making bank as well.

Not to butt in or anything, but I work for a community redevelopement firm's graphic design department here in LA and I have to say that you guy's are describing is nothing like the office settings here in the states. Infact it seems pretty eccentric to me

Uh, no shit. This is the same country that brought the world Tamagochi, Bukkake, and Vending Machine underwear. You think Japanese operate on the same wave-length as Americans?!

it really depends on the size/type of company. I current work at a company that started out with only 4 employees and has grown to over 400 employees. At one point it became like Citigroup where almost everyone was a managing director, in some cases we had single man departments where the only person in the dept was a managing director. Like Rajio mentioned, becoming one was as easy as having other managing directors vouch/sponsor for you, and knowing how to play politics. Its gotten to the point that someone in HR decided to eliminate titles in the company because of the grunt to director ratio with the exception of Tokyo which will maintain titles. Its kinda bullshit because now you're either a "specialist" or a "people manager" which are essentially titles. And the how you can work in the same office and have two different worlds goes beyond language barriers like technical competency for example.

Didn't end up going. Got stuck in the office working on an end-of-day report for some clients because some Excel files got corrupted...

i sorta know what you mean.

but my parents, friends, and I all think that there's no such thing as mild symptoms of ADD/ADHD.

i attribute that fact the people who can't concentrate = no discipline.

i just think it's a white man's disease; excuse for laziness.

people who actually have ADHD / ADD are so fucked up (the ones ive seen in japan) they are pretty nonfunctional

it's just my opinion.

well if someone's truly got it in japan, they're fucked. they won't be able to function in society.
