Hocus Pocus 262,360 Posted August 15, 2007 This thread is inspired by my current location, Chiang Mai, Thailand. It's not the locals that are badly dressed necessarily, but the huge number of hippie tourists here, who are wearing huge linen pants, shirts, tevas, and silly necklaces. It's very impressive. So where are the worst dressed places you've been? My home town, of Hamilton, Ontario has been referred to by some people I've met as the worst dressed place in the world. The rich teenagers dress in American Eagle, etc. The poor teenagers either dress emo, mall goth, or phat farm. The young adults generally dress very plainly (shades of khaki, very inoffensive), or like ginos (see Canadian eurotrash) I suppose it's like a lot average North American cities, except for the terrible eurotrash influence. That's a clashing of some very horrible aesthetics. The more I think about this, the more interesting it gets. What else you got?
Vitamian 7,055 Posted August 15, 2007 Everywhere is the world's worst dressed. People are under the impression that Europeans are far superior in dress but that is simply not the case--they have their Eurotrash and we have our gay trendsters--they both buy up D&G in bulk. And then there are the "average" people who dress in ways that a hobo might be ashamed to be seen in--disgusting sandals and shorts, unshaven and a general aura of dirtiness. I am talking about America, not Chad or some third-world African nation. In fact, I suspect someone in a poorer nation might take some more intiative in dress than our judicious Americans who are oft seen in Crocs, sweatpants or at best (worst?) business casual. They wear their suit sleeves too long and overall, appear slovenly and distinctly unstylish, as if they were actualy afraid to stand out which I suspect is the case--a sanitized metonymy.
doczein 8,098 Posted August 15, 2007 i'll probably be stepping on a few singaporean heads here, but when i spent a week in singapore this past summer, everyone outside of the general orchard shopping area just seemed to dress so... bad. it actually seemed as though the further and further you go from the major tourist traps, the worse and worse people seemed to dress. but i'm not singaporean so i wouldn't know.

swooc 99,675 Posted August 15, 2007 unless there is a one location where most of the people in superfuture live, all places are considered badly dressed.
dismalfuture 1,169,029 Posted August 15, 2007 It's all been said, but country by country, the Japanese, English, and French just do it better. I'm usually embarrassed to be from North America when I go to those countries. Koreans over here try but just don't succeed as well.

aan den rijn 4,114 Posted August 15, 2007 Saratoga Springs, NY or Brattleboro, VT. You're either a hippie or a hick, there seems to be no middle ground. Honorable mention: Los Angeles, because a disturbing amount of people here seem to think that it's perfectly acceptable to show off their farmer's tans and skin cancer by wearing cargo shorts year round... after retirement age.

gerardinho 24 Posted August 15, 2007 The worst thing bout Singapore is the piracy. People carrying fake LV bags and wallets ain't so bad, as those are really outrageously expensive here. But it turns me right off when I see someone wearing a fake fred perry polo tee walking down the street. A fred perry polo tee really isn't that expensive. I don't see why they need to get a fake one. And the pirated goods list goes on, ralph lauren, d&g, etc. Sometimes it's really pointless splashing on the real stuff here when people might think that you're wearing some fake shit from the night market.
doczein 8,098 Posted August 15, 2007 bona: i actu. pref da georgetownaz 2 da baggy evisuz homiez ... more uniform. i'm assuming you guys are from the dc metro area. for some reason people who live in dc or frequent dc think georgetown and chinatown are the trendiest spots to be, and that it doesn't get anymore "innercity" than those places. everywhere you see kids wearing the latest skateboarding kicks purchased from major, commander salamander, or urban outfitters, and their backwards-turned new era fitteds that are sort of just plopped on their heads to cover their eyebrows, and some early 90's colorful-retro-revival movement that died about 2 years ago. did i also mention the kids that carry squeaky-clean-and-unscraped skateboards around? in regards to the whole innercity thing, i regard adams morgan as more "innercity" and culturally diverse than any other part of northwest.

Uncanny 171 Posted August 15, 2007 I'll agree with Hocus that Hamilton is perhaps the worst dressed city; at least in Ontario. McMaster University is crawling with people who wear at LEAST one article of Hollister at all times (including the cologne). I've walked into 100 person keggers where that'll be all everyone is wearing. There are a few "hipsters" to speak of, but I think I already know them all and we number under thirty. This kind of monotonous environment is perfect for people who have yet to / don't plan on changing since high school. A friend of mine stopped wearing a sweatshirt with a black and white print of Kermit the frog on it only after I told him I wouldn't be seen with him in public anymore (don't try and defend the shirt. Trust me, it was awful). I believe the problem stems mostly from poor education and lack of funds. As an example, I went to a WalMart the other day and overheard to guys talking about what was "in" this year while looking at tribal print hoodies, and jeans baggy enough to hide large monkeys in. One: these guys are idiots, but that's mostly WalMart's fault, since apparently it encompasses their knowledge of fashion. They haven't been exposed to anything else, since the clothes they're exposed to through friends, family, environment are intrinsically poor and distasteful. Two: Does the typical WalMart shopper have the income to support either the basics of our fashion or even the mentality that supporting our fashion is in some way better than their own? I find it unlikely that people would be willing to change in a place where change is not only rare, but frowned upon. What we have here in Hamilton is a downspiral of fashion. People enjoy conformity even when they conform to be poorly dressed, and this is mostly due to lack of alternatives. Sidenote: Hocus, get some baggy pants and smuggle me back some large monkeys!
