The Insomnia Thread

I have pretty bad insomnia, with a horrible sleeping pattern. I usually can't sleep until I'm DEAD, retarded tired. Many times a week when I go try and sleep, I'm too restlest and can't get comfortable without freaking out. Smoking a bowl before sleep helps, but damn I need to pass a drug test.

If I didn't hate droopy eyes, I would never sleep.

you dont know what the fuck you are talking about.Melatonin has been proven to be a totally safe and natural way to induce a deep sleep.Just take it 30 minutes before sleep Its so effective that when you first take it you will wake up feeling jet lagged.why?

Because for the first time you would have has a deep sleep, and your body isnt used to it.Melatonin induces REM http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=8681

A lot of bodybuilders and athletes take melatonin to help them with recovery.I have found that it is not physically addictive

You should not drink alcohol before bedtime, even though it makes you drowsy,it interupts your REM cycle. You wake up feeling shit

dont eat anything heavy and dont smoke either

the other problem with insomniacs is the more they can not sleep, the more anxious they get, which makes it harder to sleep. It becomes a vicious circle

when you try to sleep, you should not think about going to sleep.Thinking keeps you up.The trick is to let you mind wonder.Visualise something tranquil and let you mind wonder without controlling your thoughts.

meditation helps too,as it helps you learn to calm your mind.

How do i know this works?

i didnt have a good nights sleep for over 10 years.I took sleeping tablets, sometimes triple the recommended dosage...mixed with scotch.I have seen sleep specialists, naturapaths

i take melatonin 2-3 times a week, try to sleep regular times, and i have a cd which plays relaxing music (used for newborns)as it blocks out noise that might wake you up

and i jerk myself off

if this doesnt take...i jerk again

the other problem is that some ppl can get to sleep, but if they get up during the night, then find it hard to go back to sleep. They are so anxious that their mind becomes overactive.

insomnia owns my soul. the chronic kind. aaaand my body has rejected every sleeping pill/psychoactive hypnotic/sedative i've ever been prescribed. they all just make me feel loopy as shit (not saying it's a bad thing) and half-dead 24/7.

good bump!

My honest problem is i cant fall asleep and i never want to wake up, im just not inclined mentaly to do either AT ALL. So even if i stay awake, or get little sleep, i still cant fall out. Even if im sitting at home, stoned, drunk, tired, on the couch with nothing on TV im still just NOT TIRED! Then when i do fall out, im dead to the world to wake up, tests, work, love, life, its all meaningless like i was a dope fiend for more sleep, its amazing what i have blown off to get more sleep.

AAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!

this is me exactly!

its 5am ... every hour i look at the clock and think "okay, i will go to sleep by _:__o'clock". i just never have the desire to go to sleep. id rather lurk the internet or do something else. even when i stay at my girl friends house, she will go to sleep and i will be up for hours just watching tv or on the internet. and when it comes to waking up, nothing matters to me, i am stuck in sleep mode. i will be late to work, miss a class, flake out on plans. ahh its a horrible cycle. i often try staying up for like 24-48 hours and then go to sleep at a normal time, but within a day or two i am back on my old schedule. i find the only thing that works is when i have something important to wake up for, my gf will put her bare boobs on my face. we made an agreement that if she does that, i will wake up. but thats about the only thing getting me out of bed..

just like every other student in the world, i've been having insomnia/sleep schedule problems all summer. the only thing that knocks me out is nyquil, but im sure taking it regularly will fuck you up, not to mention your wallet.

I just read that ejaculation releases some kinda chemicals that make you sleepy, but it seems to be the opposite for me.

the next methods i'm gonna try are melatonin (i've tried it before, but probably not enough cuz i didnt feel it at all) and getting my eyes off any screens for an hour before sleep (laptop, iphone, tv, etc)

wish me luck, i have a month to fix myself before school starts

wouldn't working out release endorphins that would make you feel more energetic??

i hate how i have trouble sleeping, and i think about all the time i'm wasting and how i could be studying or doing homework or something LOL.. then that worry keeps me up and it's a vicious cycle. :(

I'm up 'till at least 2am, then back up at 7 or 8. Bought some sleeping pills from Costco, but was a mess the next morning. Felt super hung over and worthless, even with 8 hours of sleep. Ambien CR is absolutely the truth, you just gotta commit to getting in bed and letting it work. Regular Ambien is intense if you don't let yourself fall asleep. I literally remember nothing from the previous night. Fun, but sketchy as fuck.

I used to be hit or miss with sleeping pills (when they worked I would feel like death) and nyquil wouldn't do shit for me. Been taking tryptophan pills for the past month or so and I love them. Since they're natural your body knows exactly what to do with them so they can be much more effective than sleeping pills, plus they aren't habit forming.

I highly recommend them.

the pill i took has a bad taste, it boils up like bad chems.

here is a picture i took of the movie to help make this moment more bright and fun.

Yeah Astro it's in Turkey (it's actually in a lot of food) , I take one 50mg pill of 5HTP (hydroxitryptophan) or some shit. I started taking it over winter break when I got in a shit sleep cycle, would fall asleep between 5-8am and a couple nights I didn't sleep at all. I can sleep fine with out it, but it helped me get back in a good sleep schedule and it's great because my room mates generally like to go to bed earlier than me so it helps me fall asleep.

E: It's an amino acid southfive so it's not addictive but I suppose you could psyche yourself into thinking you need it. It's not bad to take regularly though so it wouldn't really matter. Taking sleeping pills regularly would be a terrible idea though.

i'm in the same "can't fall asleep/can't wake up once I do" trap that i always seem to fall into, and it is wrecking my productivity. it's so strange though my ability to talk myself out of waking up early once the alarm goes off in the morning, even if I argued for myself waking up early the night before.. it's like my mind formulates a perfect excuse to sleep in that's set to go off just as my alarm does.

i have also developed this bad habit of getting weirded out by the sensation of my heart beating.. i've tried to convince myself that it's completely irrational to be made uncomfortable by your own heart beat, but all the same, I haven't been able to fall asleep on my left side in a long while.

I've been taking melatonin since high school. I get this stuff that has more than just melatonin, can't really remember what but it's all natural has l-tryptophan, skull cap, other shit to help you sleep. it makes me fall asleep but sometimes I wake up after only 6 or 7 hours. I just started taking Valerian root in January and that has been helping somewhat to be able to sleep for 8 hours.

I also had a brief summer on sleeping pills (9AM job 5 days a week) and that just made me feel like shit so I don't even touch anything prescription.

Also whenever I smoke weed, I sleep really shitty. I used to sleep like a baby when I smoked but now I sometimes have trouble falling asleep and then I most always wake up earlier than I want.

Nothing better than sleeping super hard and waking up completely blissful because you feel so great. It happens sometimes.

a recent over the counter solution i found that works that is to combine 1 benadryl(diphenhydramine) and one unisom(Doxylamine succinate) chased down with an alcohol beverage.ive also added a natural supplement with valerian root, chamomile, and melatonin. I only do this once or twice a week when i have to work a early morning shift. make sure you can be in bed for 7 hours. also watching a familar show, or listening to familar music helps. If you are listening to some new Chill stuff that you are exited to hear you will be anticipating the next track too much if that makes sense. I usually listen to familar EDM tracks and mixes which are far from chill but since they are rinsed out in my mind they act more like white noise if that makes sense. also i cant smoke weed unless its a few hours before i go to sleep. also not going to sleep drunk. if you are drunk eat some carbs and drink a lot of water and eat antacids.

What my doctor recommended was documenting my daily activities and comparing them to my sleeping habits. I've been doing this, daily, for almost the last two years.

From what I've recorded, things that almost directly affect my sleeping pattern and ability to fall asleep are: having a good or bad day, having 3-4 proper meals during the day, doing something productive or going to work and listening to music while I'm attempting to go to bed.

Any days I have a mixture of valerian root and/or chamomile 1-2 hours before bed seems to help out as well. At the same time, sometimes I'll have 4 really good meals, an awesome day, be very productive and still get absolutely no sleep at all.

When I used to take the transit more often, I found that if I slept on the bus (30 minutes) and on the train (30 minutes), it would ruin my chances of getting a decent sleep that evening. Heavy drinking and drugs usually put me out after their initial affect but I can't do this every night 'cause I don't want to wake up hungover or jaw clenching or whatever.

I really think the 'diary' helped me out, though. Some days, everything can go right and you can't fall asleep but most of the days I've had a proper, full 7 hours sleep(since not everyone needs 8), there's a pattern.

As for music, the last song I remember playing on most nights is: paranoid android by radiohead.

btw here is the stuff I take:

http://www.healthsuperstore.com/p-buried-treasure-sleep-complete-16-fl-oz.htm

tastes like absolute dog shit but it gets the job done.

Ingredients: Amount Per Serving % Daily Value*

Vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine HCL) 3 mg **

Magnesium 400 mg **

Chamomile (matricaria chamomilla) 100 mg **

Passion Flower (passiflora incarnate) 100 mg **

Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) 75 mg **

Catnip (nepeta cataria) 50 mg **

GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) 50 mg **

Hops (humulus lupulus) 50 mg **

L-Theanine 50 mg **

Melatonin 3 mg

and sorry it was L-Theanine not tryptophan.

But in all honesty, melatonin by itself also does a good job. Check out this spray stuff that tastes great and usually works:

http://www.sourcenaturals.com/products/GP1405/

I might actually just use that spray and keep taking Valerian root and see how that works. Fuck, I don't even know if taking Valerian root and melatonin together is good and Idk what the long term side effects of melatonin use are either...but I've been taking it pretty much every night for the last 4 years and I'm still kicking so I guess I should be alright. Better than prescription.

...I just wish I could sleep like a baby when I smoke weed because it's honestly what has stopped me from doing it except for every once in a blue moon.

valarian root/cham/melatonin combo has worked really well the last few days. only .2mg of melatonin (1 dollar for 30 at the dollar store). alot of articles say melatonin is effective in small doses and too much can jack up your REM cycle. crazy ass dreams though.

last night i was in standoff situation where dude hands me a gun and tells me to end it myself and i was considering doing it.then i remembered it was a BB gun.

also wierd high school era dreams. Im bout to be 30....

Anyone else here have restless leg syndrome? I just noticed this and its awful..

20 minutes of deep stretches and a Benadryl will put you to sleep. Hit all the basic leg stretches, plus groin and hips...really get in there too. If you have an SO it's easier if s/he does your hips for you.
