HARDCORE SAVED MY LIFE

Recommended Posts

  • 1 month later...

I really don't dig hardcore as much as I use to, but there's great band from my state called Modern Life Is War that everyone should check out. "D.E.A.D.R.A.M.O.N.E.S." is an absolute classic.

Converge is about as close to yr atypical hardcore band that I get. Practically all the music I listen to is influenced by the genre but is too experimental or melodic to actually be put into it (Transistor Transistor, The Blood Brothers, At The Drive-In, etc).

HC shit is crazy...gotta love it. I didnt' grow up in the scene when it was really at it's peak and "pure"...I was born in '81...but I had a few older heads who were into it while I was still growing up (I was more on my Hip Hop shit at the time)...including my homegirl who's uncle was Mr. Countey, Bad Brains' manager. Favorite bands include:

Bad Brains

Black Flag

Reagan Youth

Minor Threat

D.R.I.

M.D.C.

Leeway

Cro Mags get props

...oh yea...Born Against...and Born Against.

ive always been in the h/c scene somewhat, but most of the hardcore kids in the scene here were sxe and knew i had a drug problem (since the age of 14) so i got on the bad side of alot of kids which was bunk...openminded my ass...these days i see lots of those same kids drunk around some times time..hypocrites, begging me for a connection but i be on the sober side...

jerry's kids is coming soon...might go to that...havent been to a show in about a year.

alot of you sound jaded, which i can understand....everybody changes..its part of life.

any good bands touring this summer (besides jerrys kids)? wouldnt mind going to a show...

The lyrics are over the top political/socialist, but are even relevant now.

Exactly why I listen to classic HC shit so much today...moreso than anything else recent (in any genre). It just is a bit more raw and edgier...straight to the point...more about the general causes of the problems, rather than the heavy focus on just "I Hate the President" banter/trend that we have in so-called rebel music of today (although they did focus on Reagan, but face it, it's become a fun, cute thing for everyone to be "mad" and complain about the president now...the current guy makes it too easy). It wasn't about this celebrity corporate anti-Republican fiasco...it was a movement saying fuck the system as a whole, no matter what side of politics you were on...they all sucked because of x, y and z.

you know what? hc is so fucking cool its not even funny. if you look at the cro mags or raybeez RIP or richie cipriano or reagan youth 1988 or any of that shit you just cant fuck with it. all the cocksmokers on this board who just got into comme des garcons and t shirts last year and are trying to get over ninja tunes, trying to find something cooler than nudies and pretending theyre too cool for sneakers when they were buying SB classics last year will never even touch or understand what style truly is.

hc is straight up the coolest shit in the world, even when its fucking gay like it is now, even when so many hc kids suck so hard (which i aint sayin they do, but face the facts, its pretty gay now), when so many bands were so disappointing and failed in the biggest way, theres no girls, no money in it but it is so fucking good that you just cant touch it man, even when it sucks it doesnt compare to when its so fuckin ill.

my life gets worse every day but i will always get by on another day when i think of how fucked id be if i hadt gotten into hc, how many good things hc has done for me, how many cool people i met and how lucky i am to have found it. straight up its the illest, geto boys 1989 cash money 1999 is some fly fly shit but you cant fuck with enn why aiche see

i aint no homo'ing this post even though hc is so so so gay sometimes. fuck its gay

shout outs to all the true hc kids.. dont cut any corners

fuck corny newjack hc pussy sneakerheads

you know who yall are

cro mags

i started something

this dude is backed for tellin it how it is.

hardcore is what it's about. it's how life should be, as long as youre into it for the right reasons. like ya said: youre not makin money from it, you're not gettin girls from it, but it's still the best feeling in the world when youre at a show with kids that actually care about the same things you do, singing along, dancing, stage diving, whatever. doing whatever you can to have a great time all the time.

I'm straight edge too, have been since age 16 (seven years ago). There isn't an older hardcore scene in Reno, it's all newer stuff and picking fights with Cali crews. I never really got in to the scene but I still went to shows and I still like some of the music.

Reagan YOUTH - my other favorite NYHC band

The Beastie Boys '95 HC E.P. was tough (plus their old material...pre-Rick Rubin)

The Necros

Gorilla Biscuits

Agnostic Front

Obviously Circle Jerks and DK's. Speakin' of the Jerks...Keith Morris was a damned good frontman for Black Flag.

Used to be straight edge...but not on some X's shit...just cause of the general principal...I hated what the substances were doin' to people around me.

Not so much straight edge anymore...but it's all good...controlled intoxication.

gordon from BiG recommended bad brains and it's quickly become one of my favorite bands of all time. brilliant shit. i am taking suggestions for my second hardcore band to listen to.

I'd say Black Flag after Bad Brains...it's progressive and raw...much like the Brains stuff...just alot darker and more focused on depression and anger and all that good stuff. Digs deep...not just some crazy fast off the wall shit with some cat yelling in mumbles. Jazz influenced time sigs, off-the-hinge guitar work by the always stoned Greg Ginn...amazing and very emotional (pronounced: angry) vocalists (Keith Morris, Ron Reyes, Dez Cadena...and ultimately Henry Rollins).

Start with "Damaged"...that is the definitive Black Flag album...young Rollins, many of the classics they were hailed for such as "Rise Above," "Six Pack," "Thirsty and Miserable," "T.V. Party," "Police Story," "Damaged II'...yep. Listen to it over and over...it can be a bit overwhelming at first (if you're not used to the sound)...but it will all make complete sense and you'll see the genius of every song after a few. Then dive into "The First Four Years" and "Everything Turned Black"...two Flag compilations that documented pre-Rollins material...it's real ill to hear all of the different takes of "Police Story" and "Gimme Gimme Gimme"...plus Dez Cadena was a fierce motherfucker (so fierce that he started to blow out his voicebox).

Another band I'd recommend fully is Reagan Youth...amazing NYHC...super cynical and politically-minded. Not as bulldozingly loud/dissonant or focused on the emotional "bottom of the bucket" as Black Flag...Dave Insurgent was a dude who liked to poke fun at the "powers that be."

Yep...

Yep...

I'd personally start with "the first four years" as it's a bit easier to swallow and sonically better in my opinion. That's the era of black flag i always (even rollins says) I've enjoyed the most.

Good call with regan youth. I read a story about how the singer's girlfriend was killed by David Berkowitz, the son of sam. It's crazy to think about that far back in hardcore. The beastie boys first album (some old bullshit) was all NYC hardcore and they continiously give props to regan youth throughout the album(s).

Not quite. Dave Insurgent's GF was killed by another serial killer, Joel Rifkin, in the early 90's. She was turning tricks to support their smack habits and Rifkin picked her up and murdered her the same way he killed a buch of other prostitutes. Dave killed himself a few months later.

I'm gonna be that dude and politely point out that Some Old Bullshit was a compilation from the 90s. The hardcore half was from their Pollywog Stew 7".
