MacBook.

MAC SMALLS

Recommended Posts

so i did this last night by trying to shut my screen as i always do:

scaled.php?server=812&filename=photo1ix.jpg&res=medium

fwiw, its the first gen pf the current body style MBPs, released in Oct 08- non-unibody. I closed the screen and this happened. The bottom portion of the glass disconnected from the lid/roof. When i closed it, it seems like the hinge didnt move and the bottom portion of my screen just cracked.

The damage is all physical as my laptop still works.

My buddy quoted me about $600 to fix it. Im considering putting $600 into it to hopefully get 800-1000 when i resell it. Does that seem logical?

Anyone have any recommendations?

i took my laptop to apple and i guess there was an issue with the screen being glued improperly to the lid. This seems to have happened to a lot of the 2008 MBPs

They're taking care of it for free. yea buddy!

I had every intention of buying a new macbook yesterday, too. lol

now you're going to keep thinking about that new macbook you want. That's pretty awesome they did it for free though.

Fixed for you.

this buys me sometime til the next ones drop. And now i have something tangible to sell off or give to my dad (who just got into the internet and discovered youporn)

Btw - anyone swapped out the hard drive in a MBP? Thinking that might breathe some new life into it and give me peace of mind. It's from 2008. I'm totally paranoid that the HD is about to crash. Think of getting a SSD. Would it be worth it? It doesn't have the new i5 processor. Maybe just hold on until it dies and get the newer version when it drops (and sell this one).

From what I've seen, upgrading to a SSD will give you a more notable performance increase than just about anything else you can do. Swapping out the HD's shouldn't be that hard. Is your '08 a Unibody, or the gen. before? Laptop hard drives are perpetually on their way out, and it's something I've been contemplating doing as well. Last time I looked (6 months ago?) the price per mb was still a bit high, but it's probably come down since then.

My macbook is no longer recognizing my external HD. When I plug the USB cord in (it's externally powered) the light comes on, so the external knows it is inside. However, the icon no longer shows up in the finder, in disk utility, or system profiler. I've had it for almost exactly two years, and it has worked fine till now. I've switched the cables, and that did nothing. I don't want to buy disk warrior, unless I have to. I tried plugging the HD into my GF's macbook, and it was the same (though since I've saved my time machine back-ups on there, I wonder if it would work anyway). Anyway, any help would be wonderful. I'd rather get the data off it then return it/format it.

it's back to school time, so I would check out the perks too. Apple usually has a free iPod Touch, Printer, and you can get $50-$100 off.

my 2008 MacBook started to act like a Windoze after I installed Lion. I backed up all my media and decided to do a clean install. I can't find my Snow Leopard disc so I found a few guides that show you how to build a Lion bootable DVD. I did that. Disc is verified. I looked at the contents. All a go. I hold C upon boot up to load the DVD, but it after a few minutes on the Apple icon screen with the spinning progress wheel, it goes to the Lion recovery utilities screen. Anyone know what's the issue? Why won't it boot into the DVD?

Without knowing how you created the DVD, I can't suggest much. Have you tried option booting and selecting the installer? This is how I made my bootable Lion flash drive btw and it has worked fine for several installs.

dovo, my suggestion is to stay the fuck away from BB's warranties. I've seen the aftermath of plenty of hack job repairs that came out of various Best Buys, and their employees just don't seem to know enough about Macs to make proper recommendations. Even if you buy a computer from Best Buy, if its new in box it'll still be eligible for Apple's extended warranty .

my CS4 illustrator (and ps to a lesser extent) hang far too frequently. not necessarily over large files, either. in fact, i think it hangs most times when i quit, too.

i'm running snow leopard (will upgrade soon) on a late 2009 mbp, 3.06ghz, 4gb. is it me? my computer? CS4?

I'm trying to wirelessly connect a printer to my macbook, but I can't seem to connect it because I can never find the right one on the network. Does anyone know what I can do? Thanks

That's not a mac problem, that's a wireless printer problem. I always tell people just to not buy those things, EVER. No current operating system has a standardized driver concept (like they do for things like USB or ethernet) to communicate with those things, so they give you no end of problems. I would return it and get a wired one that you can plug into your router....

nah, this could be great for the company, It's pretty damn successful now, and although i don't completely subscribe to the articles several tech blogs like to write about such things, I thought that the latest one i read was spot on in saying that it was a pretty good time to do it, what with the iphone 5, ipad3 being a few months away, and there being rumors of new "mac" lines coming up. doing it now could help usher in some new life into the stuff (and plus he isnt completely gone, anyway). If he woulda done it later, the news probably would have clouded over the announcements of the new products.

also about lion, I upgraded, on my Macbook Pro mail will close unexpectedly but it has only happened to me twice. Some claim the computer is warmer with it but mine is actually the same, so no worries there (depending on your system of course).

it is fast, and the speed up in safari is worth it, for sure. mails updated look is great, make sure you recheck your settings because the "out of the box" scrolling is a pain in the ass for many, you lose some gestures but there are programs to help you get them back. as far as precautions, some people swear over a clean install, but that is only worth it if you've already had your machine for awhile with a bunch of programs, otherwise, if it is new, you'll be fine just upgrading

eh, until he actually passes, he still is Apple. Still going to be on the board, and Tim Cook has been functioning CEO since earlier this year. A lot of the major products and strategy have been in the pipeworks for years, and I doubt that his decision is all that surprising (internally speaking).

As far as Lion, home, make sure you're not using any PowerPC programs anymore, as they won't work after you upgrade. Should verify using System Profiler. I'm stuck with Snow Leopard until I upgrade my janky CAD software.....

desperation got the best of me. Got the 2009 macbook pro when i shouldve waited a few weeks to get the same look but newer edition with face time. Haven't use my macbook for any of its feature programs other than simple online browsing. Macbook cause problems midway just when my warrenty expire and i had to pay 300 for the genius bar to repair and reformat it. What a load of crap. At least I still have it till this day and tying.

RIP Apple.

Without jobs at the helm the company will go down the shitter within 5 years.

I'm selling half my stock tomorrow as soon as the markets open.

Jobs stepping down as CEO means he'll be at the office 3-4 days a week instead of 7.

I would load up on AAPL today. Watch it skyrocket once they release Iphone sales numbers after Xmas.

At this point their only real competitor is Google, all the others are dying, RIM, HP, Nokia. They're gonna be fine for a least another decade. I think they should buy RIM for pennies on the dollar, just for the BES technology.

over the past 7-8 years, i haven't used disc drives on a single computer once.
