Carl is a stupid whore....

Carl,

Makers is fine, not swill by any means, and a very common starter bourbon. In fact, it is one of the few wheated bourbons on the market (meaning that wheat is the 2nd grain in the mashbill behind corn, instead of rye, which is more traditional). If you're looking for a similar taste profile, but better quality and price, W.L. Weller 12-yr is my pick. Should be able to find it in KY for around $20-$23 a bottle instead of $27-32 for Makers or Woodford. For a top-shelf wheated, Pappy Van Winkle 12 or 15 yr. The 20yr and limited edition 23yr are excellent too, but made from a rye mashbill.

For an everyday rye-heavy bourbon, I'm always partial to Wild Turkey 101.

Other recommendations-

mixers, if you must: Old Grand Dad 100 Bonded, Old Charter

everyday pour: Eagle Rare SB 10, Elmer T. Lee, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey 101

mid-range: Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, Elijah Craig 18, Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Four Roses Single Barrel or Small Batch, Rock Hill Farms

top-shelf: A.H. Hirsch 16, George T. Stagg, Vintage 21, Black Maple Hill (any), Pappy Van Winkle Family Reserve (any)

You have a veritable cornucopia of bourbon within arm's reach. Enjoy it while you're there. :)
