laxlife1234 1,051,935 Posted June 19, 2013 (edited) Lol. Maybe I'll just get a black bar. Seems meaningful. Anyways the biggest thing to me is that I get an amazing artist, not some dude in a tattoo shop that sells bongs (or that's at least funniest/best advice I've gotten from a tattoo artist so far). If I have to pay a premium price I will have no problem doing so, especially if it's going to be there the rest of my life. But my original question was just out of curiousity... I guess it really only applies to the people that get shit quotes like 'let it go', or obnoxious crosses. I will say I'm a fan of the work that (10chars) tattoo artist does, love the shading/simplicity of it. Edited June 19, 2013 by laxlife1234
Max Power 1,649,083 Posted June 19, 2013 (edited) My personal words of wisdom: Artist: You're right regarding the artist. Go to someone that deserves that name and that you like personally and regarding his work.(At least I don't want to look at a tattoo and remeber a session I wasn't enjoying or a tattooer that I couldn't stand). Pick someone with a defined style, that does what you like and is good at that. don't ask thomas hooper for a realistic portrait. Give him freedom and just set the rough parameters. This usually works best. Motive: Don't be impulsive, but don't overthink as well. For example, if you like a motive and find yourself still liking it some months or years later, get it. If it's conntected to your lifestyle or personality in some way, even better. (If you don't know shit about punk, don't get the Black Flag bar logo because you saw it in Vice Magazine). Wait a few years if you're 18, it might help to be sure about what defines you and what you will like to show yourself and others for the rest of your life. Bodypart: An interesting thought I read by a german artist lately. He only tattoos backs or non-visible parts on newbs. Just to make sure, they really like the tattoo for it's own worth, not to show off or follow a trend. I know that many want to show a tattoo to others, but the thought of starting somewhere where nobody can see it is great. Makes sure you get it for yourself, not others. Many japanese artists and customers share this view btw. Hope this helps, feel free to PM me. Edited June 19, 2013 by Max Power
Max Power 1,649,083 Posted June 19, 2013 While I'm here, I might as well share my latest ones. Excuse the flesh. And don't ask for meanings (though there are some). Cheers!

shoreman 157,096 Posted June 19, 2013 Lol. And lax, i'm approaching 30 and still make stupid decisions; that never changes. However, the depth idiocy will be stunted by experience. I recommend a butterfly tramp stamp.

Belka 57 Posted June 20, 2013 Just out of curiosity, how many of you guys get tattoos for a certain meaning? I'm looking into getting a tattoo within the next two years (yeah long time away) but I don't know what I should get and if it should have a meaning or not. I wouldn't worry too much. Just get what you like.

Nebulae 7,608 Posted June 23, 2013 I've never really been one to think of tattoos but occasionally I'll get really amped up about them. After browsing around this thread I've been thinking of hypothetical tattoos that I'd want to get done sometime in my life. The question of "what" has always been difficult but I found inspiration in my childhood hobby of weapon design. To be honest, I don't know what my fixation was (probably just too many video games) but it's stuck with me. I whipped up some stuff in my sketchbook and have just been thinking about how people would place these and if they would ever consider getting them done. I'm thinking a few either vertically or horizontally striped, a long one down the back of an arm, in a circular formation on the back, etc. Let me know what you guys think.

Max Power 1,649,083 Posted June 25, 2013 I like it a lot (in fact I've been thinking about a similar mandala on my kneecap, but it might become something else). Who did it? And is there green or grey in the middle spots (colour looks a bit off in the second pic)?

noirwest 3,179 Posted June 25, 2013 Out of curiosity, how long did you have to wait to get to see Hooper? (hopefully not since you e-mailed him when you were 16...)
pepper davies 1,486,793 Posted June 25, 2013 Out of curiosity, how long did you have to wait to get to see Hooper? (hopefully not since you e-mailed him when you were 16...) my boss is friends with him so i kind of just took an open appointment time he had - i guess i scheduled it around a month ago. he's leaving ny for austin, tx in the next couple months so i would imagine he'll be busy for a while finishing stuff in ny and then getting to all of the texas tattoo nerds that have wanted tattoos from him
itsbenhere 2,697 Posted June 25, 2013 It's crazy that now that I'm 18 I can actually get dope tattoos. Not sure if looking at this thread is a good or a bad idea... I love all of the traditional stuff on here (mainly for the color.) I'm guessing that americana tattoos are over-represented on sufu? I feel like I never see stuff like this on people just walking around
eequalsmcbrill 9,658 Posted June 25, 2013 well how often do you see most stuff on this website on people just walking around?
itsbenhere 2,697 Posted June 25, 2013 Very true, but I feel like tattoos are pretty common now. Especially when you compare it to how esoteric the clothing is here. When I see tattoos in person they mostly look pretty lame
eequalsmcbrill 9,658 Posted June 25, 2013 i know literally nothing about tattoos, but i can tell you that people on sufu generally have a higher sense of taste in the things they like. if they like tattoos, they'll seek better artists and have more of an appreciation for it as an art form than your average "person just walking around".
Max Power 1,649,083 Posted June 26, 2013 @ADH92: I thought it was hooper. Awesome artist and how lucky you are to get an appointment so quick and live near him. Most artists I like are just too far away (Horiyoshi, Shige, Tomo, Thomas Hooper, Filip Leu, Mr.X, Xoil), so I envy you.

I'm looking into getting a tattoo within the next two years (yeah long time away) but I don't know what I should get and if it should have a meaning or not. best way i know how to answer this is to let you know that life isnt that serious if you want something blasted on you, then get it; whether it "means" something to you or not sitting around critiquing the 19 year old kid with a black panther on his forearm isnt going to get you anywhere. theyre just tattoos go get one or dont
