That's because the KKK chanted white power, as to imply a supreme race.

Black power was chanted to promote being black in the civil rights movement IIRC, not to be better then someone else

This is complete nonsense. There are just as many if not more black supremacist and black separatist movements in the world than there are white. There were many black supremacist organizations that took root before and during the civil rights movement (a movement that was, in many ways exploited and in many ways a political exploitation movement itself with its heart in a valid place) that gained strong momentum during the movement. Both white and black "power" movements have less and more radical elements. don't be so naive, young brainwashed "pseudo-liberals."

I think we've been struck with germanophilia. I'm not surprised that we've gotten to this point on a thread secretly devoted to boot fetishism. Maybe we can get that one idiot that posts pictures from crush porn videos in the next level shit thread in on this one, too...

Shouldn't we be working, and could you please turn down that retarded Julee Cruise crap that you're listening to?

that post is an epic fail.

someone who's a "streetfighter" and mouthing off as if a legit skin probably wouldn't be posting about "loving this bracelet"

core-jewels-x-fragment-design-bracelet-01.jpg

posting about how they're "...into fashion because I like clothes that fit and make me a pimp to the opposite sex. So why are you guys into fashion? Self expression? Fit and fabric? discuss," recommending jack spade bags and being amped on denim brands that look like "a mix between Club Monaco and Diesel."

go read a book... on the history of the subculture back to the 60s and more importantly, the history of your city's streets and your city's music.

I don't give a fuck about any subculture that has roots with racism. I also do listen to my city's music and thats hip-hop, not tight jean music.

How many fucking times do I have to say it, the Skinhead movement is not a racist movment. Yes there are racist Skinheads, but they are idiots who refuse to acknowledge the true origins of the movement. Just go and read it up on wiki for gods sake and stop assuming that everyone with a shaved head and boots is a hitler loving fuckwit.

You know there are different types of skinheads, don't you?

I remember thinking that nearly all were racist a while back, then I ended talking to some one day at a club when I was out with a friend, they were alright. I read into it a bit more and well, the more you know.

There's a copy of Spirit of '69 on Ebay right now. It will probably get pretty expensive though...

It's a good thing the only music ever played in nyc is hop hop, it sucks to be well-rounded.

Also, I feel bad for liking it so much, but that HJ kid's hair in the pic Jetlenoir posted is awesome.

Yeah, it will no doubt go for at least $100 probably more, some idiots worship it like its the Skinhead bible. I mean its a nice collectors item, but most real skins would agree that using it as "the official rules and regulations of being a skinhead" is a little bit daft.

Hip hop? Ahahaha? Are we really talking about/like this?

Beating you up in tight pants at the McDonalds would be worth the bail money. Just remember to listen to whatever it is your city listens to on your ipod while I knee your face over and over and over and over.

Origins schmorigins. As an outgrowth of common British street culture and Jamaican culture, yes. The style appealed to the national front mostly because the style had a natural similarity between nazi garb to start with. Boots, cropped jeans, braces. Usually the trads dress a lot better, though. Still, I've seen some sharp looking hammers in my time.

Also, books about skinheads are awful. American Skin, spirit of 69 etc. Skinheads can barely read, so much as write.

Spirit of 69 is by far the best compiled look at early skin culture through the late 70s, but you can't take it literally or as the end-all. Its funny how that book used to cost $20 when ST publishing was still around.

ST did do Boss Sounds, which is definitely worth its weight in gold as far as record history goes. Thankfully you can't write catalog numbers and artist names in a poor voice as you're right, most of the other stuff on the subject is written by an outside journal or someone lacking something upstairs.

You're right. In my opinion it seems to be a movement almost completely founded in fashion trend and that's the main draw -- but its followers are hell-bent on denying that. The problem is that, in american culture, machismo is incompatible with its (skinheads) very masculine aesthetic for fear of it evolving into an essentially homosexual subculture. It would be a lot cooler if it could adopt an openness about the fact that it's an movement based on aesthetic alone instead of looking for credibility in places it doesn't seem to be able to muster. It's homoerotic enough as it is, but as it matures and society matures maybe it can find a comfortable place in its own masculinity without having to shove these things in the closet for fear of it becoming another openly gay flamer subculture. Basically, society and the skin cult aren't ready or comfortable enough for a mostly heterosexual movement which is openly aware of and embraces masculine aesthetic as attractive. This is why you have stupid books looking for something that just isn't there. To me masculine aesthetic doesn't equal openly or repressively gay. A culture comfortable with the male form and masculine aesthetics will see those things irrelevant and that's when skinhead culture will evolve into something less braindead and in denial of its true appeal.

How are those box sets? I saw one once and really wanted it but didn't have the cash. I'm not too into the skinhead thing but a few of my friends have played some pretty great stuff for me that I'd like to get more into.

I have a grip of Pama vinyl, but should probably sell it off as 45s catch £50 a pop. $100 for stuff I don't spin as much or have digital? Yes please.

@Francis: I don't think it evolved only as a fashion considering the culture exploding around it at the time, but it definitely developed a look its seen for now. Despite that, the fashion's what has stuck around and the idealism - if even cooked up by people after the beginning to try to explain the sect - has either been forgotten or morphed into this or that. Its interesting to see all the racist sects build on and relate their beliefs to something that has nothing to do with what their about. I guess we can't account for their intelligence.

I'll agree - today, it is pretty much a boy's club with a few tomboy boy-go-rounds in the mix, and the main focus is the fashion. The state of oi music today is basically shit no matter where you look around the world, except for a few projects here and there, namely anything Carl from the Templars touches and stuff Boni from Snix is doing over in Europe, so I don't even see anything else attracting people except sounds of the past. I guess today punks/skins/mods/whatever hang out a lot more and its not all a huge deal like "five minute fashion" where you're expected to listen to this or that based on your look.

I was initially attracted through punk and reggae music, which introduced me to its attitudes, and the fashion, which i welcomed, just kind of followed suit. I don't think i've ever met anyone that got into it simply because of the fashion, but you definitely see its heavy influence its had on designers and pop culture since its inception. Since then, I hang onto some of the fashion, realize there aren't many ideals specifically 'skinhead' - if anything an undying rebellious attitude, and will never stop digging further into the music that got me into it in the first place.

As for homosexuality within the subculture, I think that's a moot point as that's in every group. Plus, who cares. If you want to get into talking about sausage fest subcultures, we can talk about straight edge, independent hip hop backpackers, graffiti writers, country clubs, varsity wrestling, fraternities and just about whatever else you can think of, but I don't think any of the above have anything to do with someone's sexual preference.

those trojan box sets are great intros to different sounds. my favorites are easily the creole records and suedehead box sets, with reggae sisters following in a close third.
