miles davis: in a silent way; kind of blue

miles always makes me kinda sad.

sigur ros.....

yep

NIck Drake does it for me - especially tracks like "Things behind the sun" on the Pink moon LP.

uh huh

nina simone: blackbird, strange fruit(i like it better than billie holidays version)

rolling stones: paint it black

i look into my heart and see its painted black.

strange fruit is downright horrifying actually.

and as far as female jazz vocalists sarah vaughn is good for a downer.

alot of smiths, radiohead, and travis too.

im depressed right now.

no one here listens to elliott smith or is he too obvious of a suggestion...?

EDIT:

CMF mentioned strange fruit (as sung by Billie Holiday) and that song is forever connected to sam cooke's a change is gonna come in my mind, and those are two very heavy songs...

Vangelis - Blade Runner Blues

Bright Eyes - It's cool, we can still be friends

Cursive - The Radiator Hums

Christian Death - Romeo's Distress

The Pixies - Where is my Mind?

Samuel Barber - Adagio for Strings

Good call on the Samuel Barber piece...which was used heavily in Oliver Stone's Platoon...very moving, emotional piece

I would also recommend (these are kinda classical's most requested hits):

Albinoni's Adagio in G Minor

Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (First Movement)

Chopin's Nocturne in C# Minor (posthumous) and probably all his other Nocturnes, too

Mahler's Adagietta (Fourth Movement) from Symphony #5

Holst's 'Saturn' and 'Venus' Movements from the Planets

Dvorak's Second Movement from Symphony #9 (The New World)

Saint Saen's The Swan from the Carnival of the Animals (the cello cries over flowing water-like arpeggios played by a piano)

There are so many more pieces that could be listed here......

Also the entire Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz, which expresses the drug-induced journey to hell lamenting his unrequited love to an actess (that he later married). Another less known contempory piece that is also excellent would be Gorecki's Symphony #3 (Sorrowful Songs) that reflects a Polish mother crying for her dead son and a poem inscribed in a Gestapo prison during WWII.
