go watch the top french soccer club. Olympique Lyonnais

Allez L'OL, Allez L'OL !!!!!

Saint-Jean and old Lyon in general is quite nice, great place to have some drinks on a terrace and some great food. otherwise, quite a lot of touristy stuff to visit, lots of old church, etc. have some rosette the lyon, the local saucisson, it's fucking good. there isn't much to do in terms of shopping, the biggest shopping area is around the old city. you might be interest by Le Carré D'Or where you can find tons of luxury brand stuff. i'm going there for a friend's wedding next september, i can't wait, i miss france...

I guess it's changed a lot since I lived there, but I used to enjoy the market on the boulevard de la Croix Rousse, up on the hill, on Sunday mornings and the terraces (café Chantecler!) and for shopping, there's a kiliwatch / kiloshop near the place des Terreaux. Surprising architecture if you like wandering around looking at buildings and streets, mainly on the Croix Rousse. The parc de la Tete d'Or is pretty.

Lyon is a bit like Geneva: really nice when it's sunny, but if it's raining you'd better stay indoors and eat 'gras double'!

What to do in Lyon? Eat!

France has some of the best food in.. (dare I say it?) the world and Lyon happens to be a culinary centre. Some of the country's top chefs have restaurants here, but you will probably not be able to enjoy haute cuisine for these prices anywhere else in the world. The renowed Michelin culinary guide has a special chapter of 11 pages dedicated to Lyon.

Paul Bocuse - one of the culinary icons of France - has his restaurant in Collonges au Mont d'Or, a few kilometers north of Lyon. If you have the chance to eat there, DO IT. This truly is the Mecca of haute cuisine.

If you're on a tighter budget, Bocuse has several other brasseries in Lyon where you can eat very affordable yet awesome food. They are called Le Nord, Le Sud, L’Est, L’Ouest and Argenson, each one with a different theme. Le Nord specialises in regional delicassies while Le Sud has a mediterranean feel. You can eat a three course meal here for little over EUR 20,-.

However, Lyon's reputation for culinary excellence is not only due to the fact that some of the world's top chefs, most of them men, work there. Women, the mères lyonnaises, have been running restaurants serving traditional fare for generations and it is the work of these women that has set Lyon up as the place to eat.

To most French people a bouchon means a cork or a traffic jam, but in Lyon the word refers to the small, friendly, traditional and unpretentious restaurants that serve regional dishes. When travelling to Lyon, try and find yourself one of these bouchons in order to sample some of the delights of the local menu. Order a communard, an aperitif made from red wine and crème de cassis (in the rest of France/Europe, this aperitif is made with white wine and called kir) and examine the handwritten carte (menu). Make sure you bring some kind of a pocket/travel dictionary, because the menus can be hard to decipher, even if you can speak basic French.

This goes without saying, but culinary delights should be washed down with some local wine from the Rhône valley, so order a pot (half a litre for about EUR 6,-) of either Côtes du Rhône or Beaujolais, as these will be good value for money.

There's also an awesome food market called La Halle de Lyon where you can buy the finest local food and ingredients. You would swear that the cherries are polished before being put on display.. the people here are proud of their local produce.

Now I'm hungry! :)

Lyon is one of the oldest towns in Europe (used to be a Gallo-Roman town called Lugdunum) so if you like history there's plenty of physical reminders of ages long past lying around, from roman to medieval and renaissance landmarks. The town is of particular interest to cinema buffs as it all started here with the Lumière brothers, you might want to check some interesting events related to that. If you want to meet Holocaust deniers, there was a bunch of them teaching and studying at Lyon II a few years ago but thankfully, I believe the university cleaned up it's act. On a more positive note Lyon is the birthplace of Jean Moulin, a French national hero for his role in the resistance so you could go see a bunch of memorials and other expos related to that. Basically, it’s a great town if you like history but I’m not too up on what’s hip there right now, do we have a poster from Lyon?

Well, you must visit St Jean, Hotel de ville, Place des Terreau (many shop as Lonchamps, Façonable...), Bellecour, nice places and great skateboarding spot (Ali Boulala often ride here), Basilique de Fourvière, La Presqu'ile, Le Carré D'or (rue emile zola) for luxury brand especially Jean Charles De Castelbajac, La Part Dieu (one of the largest mall in europe, featured Gallery Lafayette and L'Occitane).

By night, there is many clubs on boats, the better are La Marquise (free entrance), La Plateforme and Le Fish.

For discount east european prostitutes, go to La Mulatière.

For street brand as Supreme, Mighty Healty, MHI, LVC, go to Dope and Shoes Gallery, both at Rue D'Algerie, near Place Des Terreau. And for eating, you can go to Paul Bocuse restaurant or to one of the many Bouchons in St Jean.

Anyway i live in Lyon so let me know if you have any question.

From what I can remember. Lyon is quite crappy when it comes to shopping

The only valuable stores are :

Shoes Gallery (Sneakers etc)

Dope (Streetwear etc)

Graphiti (Their "creators" department carries KVA, Jil Sander, Helmut Lang, YohjiY, DriesVanNoten...).

Near Grafiti is a shop called "Un homme..." or something. That sells Dior Homme, Marni, FredPerryxCDG, Gucci etc...)

Oh yeah and another little shop near "Puma store" that had some Y3 I think

I'm kind of moving to Lyon in a few weeks!

It's not really a planned move but it's happening... I don't have an apartment, just an office. Any ideas?

well i really liked the public transportation system in lyon, and if u have a french bank card there are tonnes of public bicycles for free rent for short trips (<30min i think).. its called the velo'v: http://www.velov.grandlyon.com/

the biggest mall in lyon is at part-dieu, which is also where the train station (TGV) and metro is, so it would prob be nice if you stayed somewhere close (2hrs to paris by tgv).. the mall itself at part-dieu is not that great really but loads of chicks go there to shop on saturdays ^ ^

dunno about rental prices tho
