differences in levi's

Recommended Posts

I think 1947 is a pretty straight leg; 1964 slightly more tapered. DOn't know about 1967. Will try and find booklet I have which should explain. The new 501 is based on the 1947 shape, but lower rise, with slightly tilted waist. They said that the shape is more antifit, but I don't know if it's more antifit than the 1947 or 1964, it's just that it's not as much of a carrot shape as the previous (pretty horrible) fit.

well, the cheapest place would be on ebay. they are seasonal, so when they are gone, that's it. they come up from time to time. those Red's would probably go for $80-110. Make sure you have them do an actual measurement because I wear a 28 in those reds and my waist measures 33."

There are some good jean shops in seattle though! and Vancouver is f-ing awesome!

Carpe Denim!

When I was in Milan last September I found Type 1s with a seat pocket flaps (a la True Religion) and internal back pockets. They were nice but I couldn't get the right size. Given that many think True Religion are Levi's Red copies, has it come full circle?

Anyone else seen these?

I was in Miami a couple of weeks ago and noticed a newish selvage model that I don't think is LVC. IT's not an exact repro, has a couple of cowboys on the leather patch, I think it was circa $120, didn't look bad. Didn't have time for a proper look, maybe someone else here knows more?

Sorry, I meant Levi's, as opposed to LVC - Levi's Vintage, Not a huge difference obviously, but they're marketed differently, and LVC is now made in Japan (it used to be made in the old Valencia St factory). The Levi's I saw were generally a vintage look, with selvage, but not a copy of a specific year 501, like the LVC product, and were a little bit cheaper,

I've seen Levi Premium, dry "shrink-to-fit" style, with plain ecru selvage in the $130 range.

  • 2 weeks later...

Those Levi's premium's with the selvege aren't shrink-to-fit, and they don't have that cowboy patch. They have a leather 501 patch, and the selvege don't have the redline. Those jeans would be pretty cool, if it weren't for the fact that a half a foot extra in length isn't figured in to the specified length. Plus the tags say "dry clean only" and I'm not about to do that. The good news is that the price has been marked down quite a bit now, and I think that the Levi's store here in SF has them for like $80 or $90. I went in there today, and I asked the guy in the LVC department if it was true that they're being manufactured in Japan now. He said no, that only the one's that are sold in Japan are manufactured there.

Thought I'd hijack this thread to ask some 501 questions. This might have been covered before but I can't find anything.

During what years did Levi's use oil cloth instead of leather for the rear waistband patch?

When was the cinching buckle removed?

What year was the crotch rivet removed? (I hear 1940's but nothing more specific than that)

What year were the back pocket rivets covered? (Also 1940's, but when?

What year did Levi's start using wideloom denim instead of selvage denim?

Which Levi's have LEVI'S (or LeVI'S) on both sides of the tag and which don't?

Thankful for any answers you guys can give me.

OK. I'll bite. Feel free to correct me, anyone. My info comes from Leiv's records.

During what years did Levi's use oil cloth instead of leather for the rear waistband patch?

oil cloth was just used for the cheaper 201 range, which ran from 1906 or earlier, and disappeared by the 1930s.

When was the cinching buckle removed?

WWII period, most people would say c1940

What year was the crotch rivet removed? (I hear 1940's but nothing more specific than that)

As above

What year were the back pocket rivets covered? (Also 1940's, but when?

1937

What year did Levi's start using wideloom denim instead of selvage denim?

1980; universal by 1982

Which Levi's have LEVI'S (or LeVI'S) on both sides of the tag and which don't?

For 501, double sided tag appeared 1953.

Thankful for any answers you guys can give me.

Looks good... Boogieman, haven't checked properly, but one thing I did see is that the watch pocket WAS on the very first jeans - there's on one a pair of brown cotton duck pants, which is the earliest pair in the Archives, as well as on the $45,000 denim jeans.
