A hearty yes, yes, yes for both shoe stores recommended by fiercebol. I just picked up two gorgeous evening bags from Shuz Salon and a pair of funky casual shoes from Shuz Sports a few weeks ago. They were definitely the best shoe stores that I found there (and I *scoured* the whole city, trying to kill time, during my 24-day long work trip to KL). Unfortunately I stayed at the so-called 5-star hotel Legend (selected by my office), opposite the Putra World Trade Centre - avoid it like the plague. In fact, I believe that most hotels select their own star rating...if a hotel claims to be 5-star and charges $60/night, don't trust it be any better than 2- to 3-star hotel. I think the prices speak for themselves, rather than the star system icon_smile_wink.gif

Fortunately, you can get around Malaysia very cheaply with the discount airline Air Asia http://www.airasia.com so I wouldn't book any domestic tickets until you actually get there. For retreats, you can't go wrong splashing out on a luxury weekend on Langkawi Island - I just spent 48 hours at the Andaman http://www.ghmhotels.com/theandaman/index.asp which was absolute bliss. Couldn't recommend it highly enough. Great prices, fantastic personalised service, an in-house Indonesian spa, surrounded by a tropical rainforest right to the waters edge, teaming with wildlife such as giant hornbills, monitor lizards, spectacled monkeys, and a weird and wonderful assortment of insects.

Mandarin Oriental is pretty good, next to Twin Towers, Asian-slick style. Drawbacks: beds are a bit hard though, the lobby restaurants are filled with Malaysian "society" folk. Best avoid the Pacifica bar on Friday evening - it's where they ALL congregate

The Westin is spanking new, with the paint just dried. Decor is modern, cushy but give the restaurants a miss - airline food standard

The Shangri-La claims to have undergone a 30 miliion ringgit refurbishment, which is not evident anywhere apart from in the Horizon club floors and 3 major restaurants. Look out for the dried fruit basket upon check-in.

The Ritz Carlton is very good. A bit cosy and quite empty, as it's not super cheap. Beds are VERY comfy, the lobby lounge has a Sunday champagne brunch thing going on. Price around 200 ringgit. If you like your Moet...

The less salubrious Capitol Hotel is a cheaper alternative. Located at the heart of Bukit Bintang - KL's shopping central - it tries to be a boutique hotel. Good value and half the price of the other four places.

One last thing: KL nightlife is crap. Any claims otherwise are blatant lies.

can't agree more on your comments on the beds at Mandarin Oriental:) But on the nightlife...i bet you either have the bad experience of stumbling onto the sad-low-life existence of beach club and surrounding night spots.

there are a couple of super-cool lounge anc clubs in KL...and the crowds are fantastic.

the next time round check out Frangipani Bar and Bar Savanh and The Disco:)

Dear all,

just want to wake this thread again as I'm about to finalize my itinary for the two wks and would appreciate your help. I'm looking at few days in KL and then on to Perenthian Islands then on to Langkawi at the Andaman.

- Any ideas of places I've missed? Especially on the east coast.

- Have pretty much unlimited budget (don't ask) for accomodation, so further suggestions on resorts would be appreciated

- Anyone heard of/been to the Villas at the Sunway Lagoon Resort? the Villas itself looks fantastic but it seems to be located in some Disneyland-like hell....

Thanks for any input

The Parienthiean Island are the BOMB!!! most beautiful island in Se Asia, that i've been to. beautiful crystal claer blue water, coral reefs, and awsome beaches!! i ofund that a lot of the water on the west side was a little more emerald color (in Krabi, thailand) and on the East side was more Crystal/ Azure blue.

if you want a little nature go to 'Cameroon Highlands' - though i'm not sure if there is an upscale resort there, since i was backpacking. but one of my fav.'s for malaysia. there's mad jungle hiking, ranging from 3hours to 6hours, and Tea Plantations all over. it's so surreal to come out of the jungle and find rolling hills of tea plantations. so beautiful...

you can chekc out some pic's of malaysia at: [url=" http://www.savagecorp.com"] <a href="http://www.savagecorp.com" target="_blank">http://www.savagecorp.com </a> >> click on photography>malaysia(on the left side) Pictures 11-15 are of tea fields (and everything from 6 up os from cameroon highlands). all the buddhas are from a monistary in Penag (on of the biggest in SE-asia)

good luck.

It's spelled 'Perhentian'. When you're on those beautiful islands ask wherever you're staying to bring you to Monkey Beach. No monkeys there, just that its an isolated strip ideal for skinny dipping - hence the name. ;)

Yup, Cameron Highlands does have upscale resorts there. Frankly, I'm surprised the beauty remains despite the overt commercialism over the past decade or so.

Do avoid Sunway Lagoon Resort, it's nice granted, but as you said it is situated in some Disneyland-type hell and its located in the middle of some housing estates. Ideally, go to Club Med in Kuantan which at the top of my head isn't some form of tourist trap.

I'm Malaysian, so you bet I'm an authority. :P

thanks Ketiak...

i'll have to be frank and say i'm surprised by the rates on hotels they have in malaysia. the most expensive so far is the andaman at 900 MYR. we could not find a hotel in KL at more than 400 MYR.

However, in some places that I thought of as heavily exploited, perhentian besa in particular, I couldn't find a single resort of international standards where 24 hr electricity isn't their unique selling point.

The recession or the property bubble seem to be taking its toll.

Went to KL a month ago, spent a long ass time there...buddy got a gig down at one of the clubs.

Call me a blatant liar but if you ever go back there...

-first mention is Zouk/Velvet Underground KL(for those who know the reputation of Zouk...need I say more? For those who don't, the only Super club to represent South East Asia. Originated from S'pore 13 years ago, first branch in KL which is supposedly far better than the original. Plans or maybe already built...in Manilla and Bangkok) Zouk itself is broken into 3 or 4 sections I can't remember exactly...one of them is called Velvet Underground and is actually on a whole separate building itself next to it.

-Atmosphere(also a super club divided into a few sub-clubs/bars) and the whole Sultan Ismail street is filled with super cool night life...e.g The Beach Club and a whole bunch of others I can't recall their names.

-several other locations nearby as well...

-if you're a yuppie and want a super slick yuppie club go down to Phileo Damansara(not in Kuala Lumpur Town Centre but not far either) and head to Rush.

-Bangsar(a upclass townhood and neighbourhood in KL but away from city centre. Apparently the reigning King of Night life in M'sia). Filled with bars and pubs and mini-clubs and cafes and boutiques and what not...PACKED on weekends.

-Sree Hartamas or something like that? Packed like shit as well on weekends! Finding a parking in M'sia is literally pain in the ass! Every Tom, Dick & Harry drives a car......More local flavour...tons of M'sian style food and drink joints typical to the M'sian youth lifestyle. They seem to love congregating at these "mamak stalls/restaurants" and they all operate 24 hours. It's where all clubbers and drinkers go to after a night out for food and drinks(non-alcoholic) and just plain yakking and smoking ciggarettes. I had a taste of Indian style ginger tea there...mmm......great for aiding the discomfort associated with excessive alcohol drinking. Gives you a nice and hot feeling inside your system(literally!)...good for tummy too! They also have some bars and clubs in this area that are brilliant for serious drinkers. I.e. less pretenders and poseurs, more hardcore drinkers coz drinks are cheaper here compared to typical dance club prices.

That's about all I can remember now...yes I do have a friend who's working there as well and he's been there a few years so he knows the place very well he took us to the best spots. Got fucking drunk every other day the whole long ass trip! Ok that's an exageration but well...you get the idea. Thanks Paul for chauffeuring us everywhere!

peace out and fuck all of y'all!

just got back from my trip around Malaysia/Singapore and i just wanted to thank Lil, MarkLean and all you others. I ended up staying at the Andaman for five days despite the Japanese newly weds with iPods that crowded the place. Fantastic service and environment. I couldn't rate it highly enough...

The shopping in KL and SI was bland and repetitive actually -- the restaurants in KL were also a hit and miss...

either you're froom Radioactive or you have no clue at all...I have some friends from M'sia and they once gave me a radioactive t-shirt before(a few years ago...I dunno what they were thinking!)

Not only are the designs nothing but a copy of outdated common American streetwear t-shirt designs...i.e. nothing special. The quality is horrible! It shrunk and shrunk with every wash! And I didn't even use a dryer.

I hate everything and everyone.

actually i found the shopping to be uninteresting at best; either it's locally designed drab streetwear that backpacking aussies would wear, or, the usual brand shopping which is identical in every city of the world - with nothing inbetween.

of course, this could be due to local demand, climate (it's not like you'd walk around in cashmere) and the massive influx of japanese and chinese tourists who wants the exactly same things they find at home without paying the value added tax....

im not from radioactive.. and i must confess i don't own any radioactive tees.. so i don't know about shrinkage. but i've seen some radioactive designs from this flyer that my friend passed me. he attended the idN conference that was held in singapore. anyway, they look pretty cool... the ones featured in the flyers at least... they are much better than what some of the local brands here produce.. so i thought i'd mention them. maybe u just have one bad experience?

I went to their website...and just reading their company's manifesto made me wanna puke...not only is it badly written and had horible english, it was ridiculous! Trying to sound so original and in the forefront of style blah blah blah. In fact even worse than what we read at Mindtrix.com a while back.(try searching for that old thread titled "this clothing company rocks" or something like that. I looked at their stuff and it's crap. Like I said typical cheap looking, outdated American stuff that you can get anywhere here. You said it's better than most of the M'sian brands? Well, if that's the best they can do...I'm sorry to say that you guys better start making something at least reasonably decent.

BTW, I don't dig most of the idN stuff anyway.

I hate everything and everyone.

i'm not trying to speak up for radioactive here.. but to be perfectly honest, i think radioactive has much much better designs than what mindtrix is putting out. i won't say the same for their command of the english language though. however, i do believe that to put them down based on their command of the language, specially when we are discussing design, will be rather irrelevant and quite unfair. i reside in asia and i can safely tell you that i've seen far worse.

i won't say that radioactive's designs are prize winners. hey! i don't even own a radioactive tee! but if you see the shit that 2 big singaporean t-shirt labels "flesh imp" and "fourskin" are putting out... you might feel like recommending radioactive to people who are interested in looking at some t-shirt designs.

i guess that when it comes to visual aesthetics, one man's meat may be another man's poison. perhaps you may care to enlighten me on what labels/designers/designs you feel constitutes as good. i suppose it may truly be an eye opener for me.

ok i went to the website and realised that i couldn't find the designs i saw in the leaflet. so i went and dug out my leaflet. i've just realised that most of the cool t-shirt designs i mentioned are not by radioactive. the designs i like specifically belong to tan eng huat, WK INTERACT and tokidoki. apparently, radioactive did some collaboration for some t-shirt crossover project (which is what the leaflet is all about) and hence, the brands are on the radioactive leaflet. the tees i mentioned may not be by radioactive BUT they are carried by radioactive in their stores.

i guess it's quite a misunderstanding huh? but i'm still quite interested in what you feel constitutes as good design. :)

dude...will you relax? You sound so defensive.

Let's start off by saying that you didn't really understand my posts at all. I NEVER said that radioactive's designs are as bad or worse than Mindtrix. I was complaining about both their companies' manifesto i.e. the "about us" section on their websites. Radioactive's seems just as bad not just because of the bad writing and bad english but because of the pretentiousness of it. Let me just post it here for everone to judge:

" Radioactive knows apparel and the consumer who wear them. Each and every design is all about simplified style and function features. The colours are progressive, the shape are stealthy and the solid construction never budges. Radioactive apparel are engineered to last with style.

Radioactive clothing, designs and concepts are intended for those who choose their own path in life, those who express their individuality through many aspects of their day-to-day existence. They have an appreciation for original and authentic style, and seek apparel that is both functional and versatile. Our permanent mission is to match the lifestyle of every hard-playing, fast-moving, cool-headed teen and to motivate them to make the Radioactive as a part of their life. We call it the "Streetstyler".

Radioactive truly embodies the evolution of style. We shall represent the progression of today's streetwear market into the future, therefore we have already started out our revolutionary campaign throughout whole nation, the WEARVOLUTION!

Finally Radioactive.com.my was born, it become a platform for us to gather all of our creations, becoming a new generation retail store, offering a complete range of clothing and fashion merchandise for those who are ready to take part in our Wearvolution.

Let the WEARVOLUTION begins..."

First up, that "wearvolution"(I'm trying very hard here not to laugh) has got to go! It sounds lame and stupid! And every single sentence in that thing they wrote spells lame, unoriginal and straight out a poseurs mouth. It always pisses me off to read something like that. Not only is it arrogant and dumb to claim your own stuff as original and sophisticated, most of the time the clothes hardly live up to what it claims to be.

Streetstyler? Pfft...Ok, doesn't this sound a lot like what mindtrix was trying to pull? It's amusing and insulting to the consumers to even read anything like that...first they claim that they "know" their consumers so well, and then they go on with a long winded bullshit about their clothing being so cool and authentic by saying that their clothes are intended for those who choose their own path in life, blah blah blah blah blah blah....shit when will this load of horseshit end? If sophisticated or even mildly intelligent people were buying these stuff...I would rather be stupid, naive and have no aim in life. At least I wouldn't be buying stuff from clueless companies trying to sell something so inherently fake that was intended for "people who seek apparel that is both functional and versatile".

It wouldn't be that bad if the clothes were decent.

Second point. You said I was putting a company down because of their command in English. *Takes a deep breath* Which part of my post does it say that I don't like their stuff because their english was poor? It's a whole separate topic! I said that their designs consists of typical outdated current trend American graphics that I could get cheaply

I won't recommend anything bad at all to anyone even if it's better than the worst of the bunch. I'd recommend something that's GOOD.

Recommending a person to eat dogshit because it smells and tastes better than horseshit and cow dung is not acceptable at all to me.

I read this particular forum with great amusement.

First off, Fortuity, i would personally reckon that dickhead would never judge a label based on their english prowess (or the lack of it) for he/she is lacking in that ability himself/herself.

Having said that, with a nick like dickhead, we would definately know who we are facing with, i.e. a dickhead. (duh.)

Back to the argument at hand.

As opposed to loads of zombie sheep who go from place to place whoring to big labels simply because they are big labels, i would like to think of myself as someone who could recognize talent in clothing design and not blindly worship.

Dickhead, The thing is i personally think that Fortuity is not being defensive or trying to come to the rescue of a very average label to be honest. You accuse Radioactive of posing (which i don't disagree) but you are guilty of that very same act.

You can criticize away at what Radioactive and you know what they say... everyone's a critic. The thing is what's the point of slamming every point when you do not offer anything positive to back your argument. Where is the alternatives then? What is not posing? which label does not subscribe to consumerist values? Which labels are 'decent', in your words? What is not "horsehit?" PRAY TELL?

Fortuity asked and i'm asking you. It seems all you do is talk in circles (of utter pointless rheotoric) but you never did once offer a proper alternative.

You know what they say about empty vassels mate?

Does anyone sense gusts of hot air?

So stop being like your nick and take a chill pill.

And i would really wanna know what brands you fancy. if any at all. Drop the names mate. Show the world what a non-follower , trendsetter you are. Shocking.

dear dickhead

i really don't understand why you have to accuse me of being defensive when you are the one that's all worked up and hostile to boot. it really puzzles me why you have to first assume that i'm from radioactive and then subsequently assume that i have a friend who is related to radioactive.

honestly, i came across the post quite randomly and was just trying to be helpful. this is just a discussion forum! does everyone have to have ulterior motives in answering posts? you really need to chill man.

and dude, now you've got me really really curious about constitutes as good design to you. quit avoiding the question and answer it! :)

oh great...now I have two guys who reside in Singapore(and australia) getting all personal about such a little thing like that.

Cocaine...(ooh...badass nick by the way). You said I was being defensive? Who was the one who started the whole thing? I was just appalled that someone was recommending radioactive tees coz I find them horrible. And then he had to keep on defending himself again and again as to why he recommended the label when he coulda just said well:" I liked the collaboration stuff they did with so and so. "

And then you talk about consumerist ideaologies? You are bringing up something really stupid here. Just for the sake of helping you understand better, I don't like clothes that are overly trendy i.e. stuff that are all dictated by the mainstream mass media and big fashion houses. A lot of the "underground"(so called) labels that enjoy cult status aren't exactly totally free from the preassures of the mass media but at least they're not overly mainstream and most often than not their deisgns do not appeal to the general public. Face it, most of the people who dress up in gear from The Gap etc. would not even take a second look at stuff that a lot of people on this board dress in and wouldn't find it appealing at all. Why? That's because they don't know better and have not really been exposed to alternative fields of art/creativity/design and their style is mainly dictated by MTV and GQ. Many people on this board(I hope I'm right in saying this) appreciate non-mainstream brands because of the difference they present and because they make stuff that are not catering to the masses.

Wow, I never knew I was a trendsetter cocaine! Thanks! Hmm...I slam everything without giving anything positive to back that up...I'm also supposed to give examples of alternatives and drop some names...I see I see...so I see you're just another one of those persons who judges a person's style by the labels he wears huh? No wonder you called me a trendsetter! You were looking for some new clothes and you didn't have enough confidence to trust in your own taste and was worried that you might end up with a brand that everyone would laugh at you for wearing! I see...I see...for a person like you...play it safe! Buy the latest fall collection from CK underwears and Guess? and everything you see in style mags including the glamourous advertisements for every high fashion label out there. You won't go wrong!

What's the point of me telling what kinda brands I have in my wardrobe anyway? Even if I had some of the most original stuff out there, does it increase the credibility of my arguments? Obviously that's how you think...I'm still a student and I don't have much to spend on clothes. My wardrobe consists mostly but not entirely of graphic tee-shirts. I don't shop by brand...and I don't own many really expensive "limited" stuff. I just pick up whatever I think looks nice.

Yes, thanks also for reaffirming my identity here. I know I'm a dickhead and I like the fact that people like you notice it. Why don't you go on every board out there on the internet searching for disgusting individuals such as myself with stupid handles and remind everyone once in a while that they are "dealing with a (insert handle name) (duh)" while defending another person like the real hero that you are? Sure pumps your ego up huh?

To Fortuity...I think you really have a problem with your reading. Didn't I just answer your question? I said that since we are talking about tee-shirt designs here, we're not really solving any traditional design problems except making something that looks good and will sell. So I said that to me a good t-shirt design is one that looks nice aesthetically and also has also has a nice fit. Is that so hard? Or were you looking for a long answer on "what is a good design" in general? If that's the case I won't bother answering that coz we weren't even talking bout that in the first place. And I would also like to apologize for wrongly accusing you of being part of radioactive or know someone

oh great...now I have two guys who reside in Singapore(and australia) getting all personal about such a little thing like that.
