im sure midnight got a release on soulserious, bought it a long time ago from http://ukfunky.com/ukfunky_004.htm

good place for non-"big" label funky stuff... lil silva put up tracks there before he got that night slugs release

acid test is out now on shifting peaks

listening to the mix, first third of the mix is lazily done, forced shockwaves in because i like it but it was probably a mistake

Cool site. Digital releases seem like a much smarter idea for artists without a huge following. As much as I like the idea behind the whole vinyl scene, it gets a little ridiculous when I want to support lesser-known artists. I don't have a turntable so I'm not gonna buy a 12'' just for shits, and if you wait 3 months to release on beatport, I'm just going to pirate the vinyl rip and forget about buying the track when it comes out. Speaking of which...

2 of my older mixes.

Zen. A mix of more chill dubstep I recorded around 4 years ago. Early dmz, hotflush & burial style.

Link

An old UK Garage mix from before the Dubstep days. 2003. El-B, Steve Gurley, Landslide, Groove Chronicles, etc...

Link

I can give track lists if wanted. I've been mixing old ninja tune style stuff and IDM these days, though there's been some good 140 bpm dubstepy & techy stuff coming out. I got out of dubstep for quite a while.

Here's the list for the Garage mix.

01- Suburban Lick - Here Comes The Lick (DJ South Central Remix)

02- Leee John - Your Mind, Your Body, Your Soul (SAS Phantasy Remix)

03- Frankie J - Activate

04- Groove Chroniles - Faith In You

05- Lenny Fontanna - Spirit Of The Sun (Steve Gurley Remix)

06- Corrupted Cru Vs Dj Luck & Shy Cookie Feat Mc Neat - Poison (Oracles Mix)

07- Landslide - Cold & Intimate

08- DJ South Central - Makin Me Feel

09- Ray Hurley - Ride The Storm (Y2K Mix)

10- Goldie - Believe (MJ Cole Remix)

11- El Tuff - Late Night Jazz

12- Sound Of One - As I Am (Todd Edwards Remix)

13- Elisabeth Troy - Forever Young (MJ Cole Remix)

14- Red or Dread - How I Feel (Afterhours Dub)

15- Groove Chronicles - Stone Cold

16- Landslide - Hear My People

17- Adam K - Selekta

Should be accurate for the most part. Some were off the top of my head so the remix may be called something different rather than just the remixer's name.

Man I love that steppy stuff is coming back. This is like a better version of what I was playing in 2002. That beat in the beginning half of the track is pretty much directly borrowed from something I have from way back. I can't place it though and it's bugging the hell out of me.

You guys are into the good stuff.

if you have tracks that were like that way back in 2002 i'd love hear them. i've only recently started getting into the current funky stuff and haven't really been exposed to much older stuff so i'd love to hear it.

ps. downloading both mixes you posted up right now

A lot of 2-Step sounded like that man. Except that it was usually more directly ~130bpm (rather than half speed) and you often had more full vocal lines and dubs of vocals rather than abstract samples like that. That's kinda why I dig the new stuff like your link better. Drop the pop vocals and keep the funky dance floor beats. I'm listning through a bunch of tracks for some similar stuff.

Some sunship stuff is similar.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsdGOBgyzVE

Steve Gurley (my fav. 2-step producer)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV84WA04Nwg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmczlmDy588

El-B of course.

Wookie (aka Exemen)

Zed Bias (aka Maddslinky)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLgZ8Qeg2AY

Link <-- man this is good classic zed bias. i can't believe he's still making tracks.

I still can't find the track that sounds like the one you posted. I may have it on vinyl rather than MP3. I don't know. It sucks cause I can fucking hear the track in my head. I'll run across it.

This is some better Sunship.

Link - Youtube versions killed the quality.

This may have been the track I was thinking of, but on listening to it again it's not tooo terribly similar.

I'm also reminded of the extended pseudo-breakdown on a DJ Abstract track called Took My Love Away that I always used to wish that the whole track was made of. It drops at around 1:30 in this sample.

http://www.chemical-records.co.uk/sc/servlet/sm?C=RAT010&S=1

It's also very similar to that track you linked. I probably had like 3 different tracks mixed together in my head. In any case, it's given me an excuse to drop a lot of old 2-step in here. This kind of stuff is where Dubstep came from. Not merely influenced; but direct evolution.

enonsense, cool that you dropped moments in love with the rest of those tunes in the "zen" mix. always found that tune to be way ahead of its time. even today it sounds fresh. really enjoying this mix, thanks for posting. i'll check out the tunes you posted after it finishes playing.
