enough hate!!!

this is a thread to discuss the excessive hating of several media personalities.

1) kenny g -- don't hate on him. he's brought more people into jazz than any of the current jazz people out there. and, some of his older stuff is not that bad. yeah, i said it--and i know my fuckin' jazz. the hate received from pat metheny was completely uncalled for, especially since pat metheny's music is generally unlistenable.

2) carson daly -- look at what the hate has done to him! he's a shell of his former self. he used to be chubby, happy-go-lucky. now he looks like he hasn't eaten in months. why the hate? sure, he's not really talented or charismatic, but come on, he tries to keep it real as best as he knows how. and that means something.

3) john mayer -- i just watched a dvd with him performing live, and he's the fuckin' truth on the guitar. i like some of his songs a lot. plus, he speaks japanese and is into design, which is dope. does he deserve our hate? no.

i DO reserve my hate for that piece of shit chris botti. actually, i think i channel all the hate i should have for the above people into hating chris botti. HE SUCKS! yeah, he does.

ok, ok, maybe you have a point about carson daly. i just feel so sorry for him. he tries to beloved by all, but it has only caused him to be hated by many. last night, it was the first time i saw his show in a long time and i was shocked to see how he looked. then, a white comedian came on the show and rapped a rap song that totally dissed him. i mean really dissed him bad. carson looked like he was gonna cry.

poor guy.

so I was watching Good Morning America this morning.... and they were running highlights from all the late night talk shows cracking jokes on Britany Spears. (Leno, Letterman etc) except for Craig Ferguson who was the only one who decided not to poke fun and hate on Britany's troubles.... But to recognize her issues and her need for help & the concern with her kids. He mentioned he himself has been sober for now 15 years... I was impressed with his choice not to follow what everyone else and shed a different perspective on things... Craig Ferguson just earned madd street cred in my book.

sorry if this is off the topic... miz

John Mayer: I saw him live at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in the cotton bowl. He was invited by Eric Clapton and was recognized as one of the premier players in the United States. Granted, his music is pop and it makes him some money, ya gotta eat though. This guy traded licks with Clapton, Buddy Guy, BB King, Robert Cray and Robert Randolf and believe me when I say this, the guy can fucking play. In twenty years he will have made his money and his mark on the world of music. The guy is a gunslinger..no question about it.

if john mayer speaks japanese, i'm fluent in at least a dozen languages, if not more...

chris botti is not even "i can't believe it's butter." he's like some bootleg version of parkay. yeah, i said it, PARKAY.

damnlam, that crossroads festival is where i saw him play (only on DVD though). yeah, the man can play his ass off. he held his own with all the greats (i don't include jimmy vaughn as a great though--he shouldn't have been up there).

almond, i can't see that vid cuz i am at my job.

coleslaw -- chris botti is a cornball who plays the most uninteresting lines out there. also, he is playing really shitty versions of jazz standards. he's whack and he definitely deserves the all the hate in the world.

about dave douglas, how could i hate someone who played with chris potter, joe lovano, john zorn, don byron and everyone else?

pharell shouldn't be hated on.

You see I did not mention Jimmy Vaughn as I agree with you on that point. As far as the other poster mentioning that he rips off other blues players. What blues quitarist has not borrowed from another? It is kinda of understood that how it goes with blues guitar. Blues licks are pretty standard, technically he is and outstanding guitarist. Stylistically he has a way to go, but to be able to borrow from the greats show that he has talent. So, I agree with you to a certain degree.

ain't nuthin you can play in the blues that hasn't been played before. the language of the blues was mostly already formed before the time of recordings. the legacy of the blues is that it is passed on from one guitarist to another, copied, lick by lick.

to quote miles (talking about louis armstrong):

“You can’t play nothing on modern trumpet that doesn’t come from him, not even modern shit."

so, everything comes from something.

copying is the first step to finding your own sound. ray charles copied nat king cole until he found his own voice. chet baker copied miles until he found his own voice. even jimi copied, but could you deny that he had his own voice?

i think miles said it well when he said:

"Man it sure takes you a long time to sound like yourself."

EDIT: sorry, another cool miles quote which is somewhat apropos.

“We’re not going to play the blues anymore. Let the white folks play the blues. They got ‘em, so they can keep ‘em.”

I've actually hated on Eric Clapton for a long time, 'cause he has recieved so many accolades that I got real tired of him. But after that Crossroads festival, I realized that he is the fucking truth. John Mayer needs to feel some pain in order to play for real. I'm suggesting a stack of Fenders falling on his head.

Miz… Yea I agree with you about Dave Douglas. What about great instrumentalists that converted to smooth jazz to sell records? Off the top of the head:

- Mark Whitfield

- George Benson

- Grover Washington Jr.

- Miles Davis

Miles Davis is the fucking man… even if he did record "You're Under Arrest"

Good thread miz.

I am in total agreement re john mayer (the dude can play, and he's a great songwriter) and chris botti (sucks balls).

However Kenny G is a slightly different matter - yeah, he's introduced the mainstream to (better) jazz music, but he is not a good player IMO. Pat Metheney went overboard (it was a fucking funny rant though). But if anything good ever came out of Kenny G's horn, it's genesis didn't occur in Kenny's head. The dude used to play with Jeff Lorber (awesome/lame studio fusion) back in the 80s, and he played some mad solos, but who wrote the solos? Jeff Lorber. Kenny's a hack with very average tone. And he's a corny hack at that. Just my .02. Sorry for the hate (in a thread that's supposed to be about NOT hating!) :)

Charlie Sheen

I don't care if he is crazy or drug-addled or both, the amount of hate he is collecting in the media is grossly disproportionate to any bad thing he has actually done. Beating up pornstars or using his producer's Hebrew name are not good things, but it's not like he killed someone or sponsored dog fighting or something.

I dig the guy for stepping on politically correct toes for the fun of it, and especially for saying AA is a cult and thus driving 12-steppers into a indignant frenzy.

re kenny g, he has been included in the lineup for this years jazz fest (i think he has played here in the past), which caused a fairly significant e-riot/e-backlash

there were a few voices of reason saying basically what miz said four (!) years ago, which is that despite his reputation he is a legitimate, skilled jazz musician and worthy of performing at the festival

plus dude has a sense of humor about himself (see his recent commercials), which I can respect

there are plenty of people who make blander jazz, he just happens to sell more records than they do

i kind of want to go see his set cuz if he's actually capable of tearing it down it would be sort of awesome to watch

probably won't though, but w/e
