Heya everyone,

im going over to Amsterdam for a few days towards the end of the month, never been before, and don't have that much background knowledge, -

does anyone know of any boutiques they could recommend, after labels like - Undercover, Number (N)ine, and the more obscure younger Japanese labels, but yeah any advice would be appreciated.

cheers

Only store I know in Amsterdam that carries various Japanese labels is Ennu (Cornelis Schuytstraat 15) not too sure if they have a good collection these days though. For the large well-known international labels, you probably want to go to the PC Hooftstraat, near the Rijksmuseum (which is being renovated by the way).

^Man said everything in his first post, last time I checked Ennu only had womens Undercover, and am not sure if the even have Number (N)ine, forget about the rest. Ennu focusses on women with a small selection for men on he side.

If you're coming for clothes you might want to consider buying a train ticket to Paris as soon as you arrive in the 'Dam!

Have fun!

Or Antwerp, cheaper and closer. An easy one day trip.

By the way, I know this is a super long shot, but I'll be back in AMS in a couple of weeks. I've been there twice before, and I dined in an awesomer restaurant in Jordaan, close to the main canal that divides Jordaan from the center, a little bit up north. It was simple really well prepared food, like steaks/fries, and they served Belgian beer. I remember it visually, but don't remember the address. Any chance that someone might point me to it so I don't spend half a day looking for it (because I will)?

Tough one indeed. Jordaan has heaps of nice restaurants. Can you describe the street where this restaurant is located? Cars parked in front? Street/canal/sqaure? Terrace? What was the layout of the restaurant like? Interioir? I'm willing to have a go at cracking this one.

@topicstarter - for Japanase labels in Amsterdam, try to contact Edson@PATTA, the crew at Lijfstijl.nl and Ido@90sqm. Also you might find the odd piece at 2PR. However, London and Paris will be better destinations for Japanese goods.

Thanks for the reply. It was definitely northeast in Jordaan, above Rozengracht. The decor was simple, a bit cavernous, sort of like an Irish pub. It was long and fairly narrow. I beleive it was about a second or third storefront from Princengraht canal. It was definitely nothing trendy, just really excellent food and Belgian beer (best Chimay I've ever had).

I'll have a look around when I'm in the neighbourhood.

On saturday the 24th there UNK at Club 8. Lots of artists/fashion designers/hipsters/queers/dresser-uppers and music-wise it's probably exactly what you're after. Awesome DJs!

The Sugar Factory will host Rex Electronation Live. Expect a combination of live sets and DJs playing electro, techno and everything in between.

Flex Bar (Westergasfabriek) is fairly new and should attract a nice crowd on saturday.

Club 11 - on the eleventh floor of the old postal service HQ - is a great venue worth paying a visit, although saturday the 24th would not be my pick. If you're into minimal techno, bleeps and bits though, this should be your pick.

As for bars, these are currently my favorites:

Lime (Zeedijk near Nieuwmarkt)

BEP (Nieuwezijds voorburgwal near Dam square)

Lux, Weber and Kamer 401 (Marnixstraat near Leidseplein)

ARC (Reguliersdwarsstraat near Rembrandtplein)

@Hypebitch - Zebra Lounge? You must be kidding me!!

You DEFINATELY need to visit the 9 straatjes. It's kind of a maze out there, so get yourself a map. Lots of specialised shops, almost every shop has something interesting! You should also visit the regular shops in the Kalverstraat, a friend of mine once bought Nudie veggies for just 30 euro's! Sale season is almost over, but there still are a few shops that have sale.

Oh, and there is this one shop that sells exclusive and Japanese-brand clothes for men near Zeedijk (=Chinatown). It's incredibly expensive tho! I forgot which street it was. All I know is that you'll encounter it on the way towards Chinatown when you start at the monument.

That would be 2PR.

As soon as your in Amsterdam go to the nearest newspaper kiosk and buy the latest issue of Cosmopolitan Shopping (Dutch Issue). This issue is full of pictures and addresses of the best and most obscure clothingshops in town, also a lot of addresses to vintage stores. Besides that has maps of where the stores are located (So you don't have to read Dutch to understand it). I happened to see the magazine at my girlfriend's place and I was amazed of how good the guide is. There where lots of shops I never knew they existed, although I'm a native myself. Oh, yes Cosmo Shopping comes in a handy bag size format. And no I have no shares in Cosmopolitan :)

The only note I have to make is that quite a few shops are aimed at women (Cosmopolitan is of course still mag aimed at women), but most also do mens clothing.

Is the 2pr store near chinatown located at oude hoogstraat 12 - 1012CE amsterdam?

thanks again

That is correct. On the superfuture map, Nieuwe Hoogstraat runs through the exact center of the map. You will also find Tom's Skateshop, Zipper (thrift store) and SeventyFive (sneakers) and bis (thrift) further down the street if you head east.

Chinatown is located a bit more up north, starting at Nieuwmarkt. This is where you will also find Lime bar, and some amazing Thai food that is quite affordable.

Search for some of my older posts if you're looking for more shopping tips. There's lots of info in the archives somewhere.

  • 1 month later...

great info guys, I'm going this weekend and will have to put this info to use. Sorry for the extraneous PM tisswat, I should have spent more time looking through everything first.

I'm not looking for any particular recommendations, but are there any particular labels here that are cheaper/easier to get than other places (I'm guessing Nudies for one)? Also, do they have VAT (tax) exclusion for tourists?

No problem at all. Here's the info I already sent you. I'm posting it here as well, as it might be helpful for other visitors..

Hi ardeetee,

To answer your question, Nudie is sold pretty much all over town here, but the selvage models are a bit harder to find. Bendorff (Kalverstraat), Spoiled (Wolvenstraat), Lockstock & Barrel (Hartenstraat) and Goods (Huidenstraat) might be worth paying a visit.

The latter three are located in "De 9 Straatjes" (the 9 streets) area, which is currently very popular amongst us locals. Lots of smaller unique stores, some independent designers and lots of vintage stores. This area is not yet dominated by the big international chainstores. Haarlemmerstraat/Haarlemmerdijk enjoy a similar atmosphere. More recommended shopping areas are Nieuwe Hoogstraat and the adjacent Sint Antoniebreestraat. Also, Utrechtsestraat has quite a few interesting shops.

Kalverstraat is the most popular shopping street in the city where you will find your Footlockers, H&Ms, Zara's, McDonalds, etc. etc. The place is dominated by the bigger chainstores and it's usually crowded, especially on weekends. Nieuwendijk is the cheaper and more 'urban/street' equivalent of the Kalverstraat. Think sneakers, FUBU, Kani, etc. I rarely shop here, but I like to strawl through and watch the 'playas and fly honeys' doing their thing. Leidsestraat is a bit similar to Kalverstraat but slightly more upscale (with Kenneth Cole, Timberland and Nike Women) and a bit less crowded. Head over to the PC Hooftstraat for your Gucci, Armani, Prada and such.

Note that this coming sunday and monday is Easter, a national holiday, so you might see some closed stores on those days.

On a more positive note, there are several parties this weekend that are definitely worth checking out:

On saturday, join the rest of the Amsterdam hipster kids at M.U.L.T.I.S.E.X.I. in Studio 80 (Rembrandtplein).

If the weather is nice, you can visit the opening party of Club Bitterzoet's newly rehauled beach club called Timboektoe in Wijk aan Zee (Noordpier) on saturday night, starting at 21:00. Free bus rides from and to Amsterdam will be organised, but you need to make reservations by contacting [email protected]. Guaranteed to go off if the temperatures are up. This will be a great way to mingle with the locals.

Another not-to-miss this weekend will be on sunday as the infamous Meubelstukken start their brand new clubnight called Little Sexmachine in the current hotspot Flex Bar (Westergasfabriek area). This will probably be busy as hell, so come early (or get on that list).
