Its what I do for one of my phones. Except, I use a free service (grandcentral) but its no longer open for new users.

For those on PCs, what's your preferred method for maintaining/syncing contacts? I found attempting to sync with gmail horrible .. so that's a no go for me. Windows Address book perhaps? Outlook? Something else?

I pay $67 a month after taxes for 1500 anytime minutes, unlimited text, and unlimited internet/data. not very expensive to operate an iphone, no contract either

Who's your phone carrier? If you are on at&t or 02 or with an official iphone carrier, call them. If, however, you have the iphone unlocked, then you're out of luck. I know alot about iphones and i've never come across that probably. You sure you don't have edge/2g switched off? If you're unlocked, do you have bossprefs?

Whats an actual useable SMS app. The stock one sucks balls, and all the good ones on cydia make you pay before they become usable. I dont want to pay for features that are standard on other phones.

there's a program called PDAnet available on cydia that does exactly this

It's called tethering. You should be able to find some programs that can do it or just ask for the name of it. My current "old" WinMo Pro phone can do it over mini-USB or even Bluetooth or Wi-Fi (phone is seen as a wireless access point.) I also remember doing it back in the 90s with a few Nokias and the good ol' Motorola MicroTACs & StarTACs.
