prebuilt velocity deep v wheelsets can be had on ebay for like 250.

but if you're gonna have it built, it depends on the spokes and hub you want... i actually just called trackstar in nyc today to find out how much for them to build a rear wheel for me... 35 plus spokes, around 60 per wheel. can get the velocity rims online for about 50 each. so that's 110 per wheel before you buy a hub, which is the big variable.

i'm new to this too, so i could be wrong, but that's the research i've done. mlproject will correct my if i'm off :)

that's about on the money.

the new pistas look like dog barf. i'm trying to find a 57 in celeste.

@seenmy:

the deep-v / formula sets on ebay are usually around $250 and are a solid deal. they're super rugged and run sealed bearings. with the dollar sucking a massive king kong dick lately you can pprobably get that at a steal or do a phil wheelset or something nthat will never ever die. phil sets on deep v's would probably run about $550 and are worth every fuckin penny.

@greentalks:

just buy a road front on ebay and you can find some cheapass deals..

@aaron:

you know the trackosaurus dudes? nice concept!

@everyone ...

who stocks toshis? with toshi dying, i guess they're out of production and i can't find any. if anyone wants to do a LBS pickup for me for a pair of white suede ones, teal or even black ones, PM away...

i also just got a massive grip of these jitensiya-jin magazines from tokyo with love. if anyone wants one, hit me up. it has profiles on almost all of the major keirin framebuilders with tons of bike porn, including this iribe with is jaw dropping:

man... one day... some day-- i'll have a track frame (probably be riding a conversion into the ground. or till i get a job.)

toshi's at an OBS?

http://130.94.226.209/Store/Toe_Straps

if you need it-- i could make a trip to SF. could always use an excuse to drive out there. and i'm always down for looking at bike shops. kinda new to the area so checking out LBS is probably a good thing for me in the long run.

yo green-- you're around SF right? just put up a craigslist ad. tons and tons of roadies out there. the SF craigslist bike section blows my mind. when i was in pennsylvania i'd see 5 posts in one day... and then switch to the SF pages and dream of my glorious return...

two other OBS that carry them are bens cycles and business cycles

can someone fill me in on the background of these things? why are they so expensive? hand made, etc?

quality. they don't wear out, they feel wonderful, and quality.

and yes i said quality twice.

riding toshis is whole another experience. they anchor your foot so much better and they are super solid.

i just had one break, so i need a new set. thx for the link to american cyclery... that price isn't too bad. i forgot about that overpriced shit heap.

Ive been mountain biking for a few years now but I really want to get a road bike. I have no knowledge about road bikes at all. What should I get? All I know is I want something italian, something from the 70s-80s, and something that I will be able to customize.

gotcha. is it worth the investment for a noob? does it make riding/breaking easier to learn?

to iso and everyone else thinking of buying a track bike.im really happy with my mercier,307+40 bux shipped.the frame is decent and the parts are a bit mediocre,but if anyone is like me,and likes researching quality parts and what makes them as such,over time,the replaced parts will not only make the bike a smoother/sleeker ride,but also allow your to gain knowledge of the machine.so i suggest to many investing in a mercier.

to mlproject:how long were you running the toshis before it broke?im planning on investing in some pedals this weekend,and im deciding of going 1strap or two,and toshi or MKS.....im leaning toward going 1strap toshi/MKS,since there would be a 50dollar difference or so,and taking that money and putting it toward a set of rd sugino 165 black cranks...

Ive been looking around bikeforums...and the Bianchi San Jose seems like it would be the right choice for me. Im going to head to my bike shop to see if they have any.

I was facing the same question just about a month ago and went with the Bianchi San Jose. I'm just getting back into riding and couldn't be happier with it. Real solid, do-it-all type of bike. It's nice that it comes with a flip-flop hub, so the option of fixed is there as well. Hit me up if you have any specific questions.

i mean there's a lot of factors in there:

1. are you riding brakeless? if so-- consider your investment in good pedals + straps vs. getting levers, brakes + pads, and cables. you want good straps because you're going to be pullin on those things hard. however-- if you're riding this bike in a lot of rain + snow... maybe consider something cheaper since you'll probably wear anything down fast/hard.

2. investment-- are you looking to ride this bike for a year? more? are you going car free? if so.... go for it. and if you decide in a few months this isn't for you-- you can sell those bad boys to me :)

3. riding/breaking? like... skidding? people can do it with or without straps (don't recommend without straps or clips)-- you'll make do with what you have. understand you are paying for quality, but to start off with it won't make that much of a difference.

thanks. i have a brake, but i'm trying to only use it for emergencies, and i wanna take it off once i feel comfortable enough without it. i'm having trouble with it, and i wanted to know if higher quality straps will make it easier. i also don't have very much time to ride this summer so it's takin a while. i'll probably just stick with the stock stuff for a while and maybe change up later. thanks

im looking for a good summer bike. like a 10 speed. i know nothing about bikes, i just want something to take me from A to B and not look like a geezer.

however, i live in a college town full of bikes and bike nazi snobs... so on craigslist there are inflated prices, what do you guys think should be my price to look for when it comes to just a 10 speed racing bike. whats an honest price range?

more annoyingness/newb-style:

ohk, my situation--

i have an opportunity to get a complete & still in the box 2007 Bianchi Vigorelli (steel road bike) for 600$ but it's one or even two sizes too small for my inseam (it's 29'' standover and my inseam is 33'' inches). I tested a frame like it and my knees didn't hit the drop bars, but the seat has to be raised.... a lot.

I have a short trunk but longish arms and legs and my problem wif most bikes is that my shoulders and neck hurt the first and the most (my current from has a standover of 32'' and straight handle bars), but the frame being short reach-wise with drop bars didn't seem like a problem, but will that change when i raise up the seat post to the right height or for longer rides :confused:.

Eh--can a smaller frame still be modified to be comfortable in yer opinions? Or should I just not spend my money and wait around for another deal?

eam, those stickers haven't even dropped yet.

did 50k yesterday for a charity ride, smoking roadies left and right. saw some really nice bikes, custom cervelos and wiliers, crazy looking TT setups, and some really surly old guys on vintage steel - marinoni, cramerotti, basso, pinarello.

canice.jpg

hey canice - what kind of helmet is that? i got one the other day but it's so bulky and i have a small head, so i look like a jackass. i'm tryin to find a thinner one. maybe like that?

can anyone else suggest a low profile helmet for under $50? thanks.

so these deepv wheelsets on ebay are of good quality?it seems the mainplace offering them only dose them with flipflop back?anyone on here had a iro wheel build?they offer a build for 300$which has the perk of being able to pick differnt colour front back rims spokes etc.

the iro deep v wheelsets use forumla hubs. i know plenty of people with those wheels and they've been pretty happy.

i would definitely take any of those ebay wheelsets to have trued and checked before i rode them. never know what kind of abuse they went through getting shipped or if they were machine built.
