Samurai T-Shirt Fiesta & New Uguisu Denim Jeans!

Samurai’s Uguisu denim is finally here. The S0150GNX jean is made of Samurai's newest in-house developed denim, the 17oz left hand twill Uguisu denim. These are made into their classic straight leg fit and finished with custom iron buttons and a very nice jacquard finishing fabric on the inside. 

Samurai’s ZERO FABRIC t-shirts are now available in natural, kuromame (black soybean dyed, and kuri (brown chestnut dyed) all in plain and pocket versions!

Samurai has done a crazy but beautiful thing.. In 2010 they bought a small farm outside Osaka, Japan, with the hopes they would be able to grow their own cotton with the intention of one day being able to make garments made of their own cotton, as in a truly vertically made garment. After thirteen years they've been able to grow enough cotton to make t-shirts and of course they're as beautiful as the story behind them. The cotton is minimally processed in very small batches without the use of any harsh cleaning or whitening agents, also all fractured cotton seeds and all staple lengths are left in the cotton during the carding and spinning process for a truly unique fabric. We can really say we’ve never felt or seen a cotton jersey like this from any company.

The natural ones are made of a completely untreated cotton and the “kuromame” have been given a long bath in a locally grown kuromame (black soybean) “soup” to achieve the dark charcoal color while the “kuri” tees have been soaked in a chestnut “soup” to achieve their unique shade of dark brown.

Studio D'Artisan Kurozome Collection & Suvin Gold Loopwheeled T-Shirts

Dyed using the Kurozome method from Kyoto which creates the "blackest black" using only natural dyes; done by Kyoto Montsuki, a century old dye-house founded in 1915. 

The special edition version of this season's 100 PIGS shirt is also here. This is Studio D'Artisan's take on the classic 1950's "100 Tigers" shirt, done in a special Kurozome dyed version which looks absolutely insane. This shirt needs to be seen in person to be truly appreciated.

Suvin Gold is one of, if not the most, expensive cottons in the world. To use it to make a blank loopwheeled pocket t-shirt is a work of insanity, but now we have the ultimate classic loopwheeled t-shirt; produced by Studio D’Artisan These things are quite unique even among the many t-shirts we stock. Strike Gold 5103 Weft Slub Straight Leg Jean & Loopwheeled T-Shirts

Strike Gold’s new 5103 jean has landed at all stores. This model is their newest classic straight leg fit jean with a medium rise and a full cut leg.

With this new 5103 model Strike Gold have produced a 15oz unsanforized (but rinsed) denim made of pure indigo warp threads and a light gray weft thread. The denim is very interesting because they used a super short slub cotton for the weft threads. This is a cotton staple so short we believe it's shorter than the sugar cane fibers used in Sugar Cane's famed Okinawa and Hawaii jeans, except those use a slub fiber (sugar cane) in the warp and weft of the denim. Using a cotton staple this short is tricky when producing a fabric that should be rugged and somewhat heavy in weight because the yarns need to be spun at a far slower pace and therefore increasing the risk of the shuttle yarn (aka, the weft thread) snapping far more often than it already does. The slow spinning of the thread should not be confused with the tension or speed of a loom, spinning of yarns is a process which happens far before any loom is involved in making a fabric. All this work results in a denim that looks like no denim we've seen before. The process used gives the denim an extremely uneven texture, but not necessarily slubby looking. Our best description is that at a 45 degree angle it can be compared closely to a vintage hand-woven Persian rug, but not so much that most people wouldn't be able to tell much of a difference outside of the deeper color. The jean looks like an indigo colored denim but has a deeper blue hue from the weft threads peaking through the indigo warp threads. It's a jean like this which reminds us that we haven't seen it all, yet.

They've upped the weight to 15oz and due to the abrasive nature of the denim when new the jean will age faster than most jeans and yield a high contrast fade with normal wear.

Strike Gold has gone to the extent of getting custom rivets made which have a male part made of iron and a female piece made of copper. The reason for this is that the male piece will begin to rust over time but the female piece will darken and leaf over time giving the wearer a well rounded aging pattern even on the rivets. Crazy for some, essential for others.

Iron Heart 633s-18 Vintage Denim Jeans & 11oz Super Duper Heavy T-Shirts

We’ve just received a new run of the 633s-18 model in Iron Heart’s “vintage style” 18oz indigo-dyed denim. This fabric is an Iron Heart developed 18oz selvedge denim made of 100% cotton and slack weave woven for breathability. The 633 fit from Iron Heart has turned into one of our best selling jeans at Self Edge, it's a perfect straight leg fit with a tapered leg for a small leg opening.

Mister Freedom comes through this week with a special edition version of their Lot 64 Californian jean, this one produced out of Sugar Cane’s cotton and sugar cane fiber blend denim with a natural indigo dyed warp. These jeans are finished with fancy NOS cotton twill pocket bags, original MF-branded silver “tack” buttons, and twelve different types of 100% cotton threads used for construction.

3sixteen Crosscut Flannels & Jacquard Shop Jackets

We’ve got a hot one this week from 3sixteen.  First up we have their Rust Twill crosscut flannel from their new fall collection. These are produced of a 100% cotton medium-weight flannel which is slack weave woven for extra pattern depth and are finished with enamel coated metal fisheye buttons. 

We also have new shop jackets made of one of the wildest fabrics we've seen from 3sixteen.   These are made of a unique jacquard fabric and the jacket features three large pockets and is finished with corozo nut buttons.

Self Edge Graphic Series T-Shirt #19 - Iced Out Kei Truck

#19 in our Graphic Series is based on a photograph taken in Japan 13 years ago. We were in Tokyo to meet with our Japanese brands… it was early morning outside our hotel in Shibuya, a Kei truck stopped in front of us and the driver jumped out unloading bags of ice into the bar next door.   Emblazoned on the back of the truck were the words “POOR ICE SPOIL YOUR WHISKY”.  Over the years we kept coming back to the photo, the words, and the idea of a small batch ice delivery company freezing water overnight so they can deliver it to bars wanting to serve their patrons perfectly crystal clear cubes of ice.  We twisted the concept a bit and made it our own for these graphic tees. ⠀

We’ve done this t-shirt in collaboration with typographic artist and SESF crew member, Ry Faraola.
