Self Edge, SF/NY/LA/PDX - updates & info

This stuff looks cool, and I'm glad Self Edge is doing it, and I'll likely never buy it. But whatever, I'm sure I'm also not the target market. I'd love to hear more about the analysis that goes into bringing in a brand like this to a store like Self Edge. It seems like Rick Owens has a rabid following, and there's not a lot of overlap between those people and your average Self Edge customer, or at least that's my understanding. Streetwear and denim overlap, so perhaps this is streetwear + high fashion + denim, hanging out and being expensive and awesome?

Thanks, I'm glad you like the way the initial collection looks!

There is no formal analysis done behind the scenes before we pick up a new label for our stores.  If I'm into the brand, like what they do, and in my mind I can envision it in our five stores, then I would try to meet with the brand and see what a relationship between us would look like.  We pick up lines because I'm into them and truly believe in their vision and the product.  If we were only concerned with growing our sales numbers you wouldn't be seeing us pick up the last 4 or 5 lines we've picked up, instead we would have picked up brands like Oni, Tanuki, Momotaro, etc..

As long as I am doing the creative and buying for Self Edge we'll continue to buy interesting things, at the highest quality we available to us, while making sure that it challenges both us and our client base, because if you want comfort in brands or clothing, Self Edge was never really the place for that.

This offering from Rick Owens reminds me of the situation I had with Dior's MIJ denim years ago where I contemplated over whether or not I should buy the Diors over APC when I first started my journey into raw denim.  To this day, I still regret that I did not buy them over the APC denim.  Rick's denim would've been cool when I was young in college.  Now that I'm much older now, my taste has changed (for the better).

3sixteen's new Crosscut flannel shirts are here!  These are available now in a very soft Japanese made brushed flannel and are available in red and blue.  3sixteen's flannels are also now rinsed so there's minimal shrinkage after a wash, and we feel the fabric really comes alive after it's been given that initial rinse.

We've also received a full restock of 3sixteen's awesome chinos, available in black, khaki, and olive.

You can find these now at all of our stores and online.

These have been rinsed during the waxing process so there is minimal shrinkage when cold washed and line dried so you wouldn't have to worry about them getting much shorter than where they're at now.

Self Edge New York 10th Anniversary Party + Self Edge Graphic Series T-Shirt #9

This Saturday night we'll be hosting a 10th Anniversary Party for our New York store.  SENY was our second store and was opened in the summer of 2009.  We really didn't know what to expect at the time, we opened a store on the other side of the country from our original San Francisco store two years after the original had opened.  Over the past ten years we've really become a part of the Lower East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.  We've met so many wonderful clients, many of which became our friends over the years.  We're extremely thankful of the support over these past ten years, it means a lot to us to make it in a city like New York.

We have a limited edition t-shirt being released this Saturday along with free SENY stickers and beers.  The t-shirt will also be available in small numbers online for those unable to make it to NY for the party.   We hope to see a lot of you there to celebrate ten years and to look towards to another ten.

Kiya, have you considered doing another collab like the spectacular Self Edge x Dry Bones 19 or was that a once in a lifetime endeavor?  Thanks

We actually have a couple of jean collaborations in the works at the moment, one with a company we've done collaborations with in the past and one which we haven't.  Both are slated for a 2020 release!

Pure Blue Japan Overdyed Warp Jeans & Lightweight Black Jeans

This week we have two new jeans from Pure Blue Japan.  One is made of a very special overdyed warp denim and the other is made of a lightweight black denim.

The XX-18oz-019 jean is made of an 18oz denim with an indigo weft and a warp made of a yarn which is pure indigo dyed then overdyed black before being woven into denim. You’re going to get a “three way” fading process with these as the warp and weft age in a different manner over time.  Really wild, and very PBJ.

We also have a new 12oz lightweight denim with just the right about of slub character.  This is a black warp and black weft denim that'll still look great with some wear due to the weave variation in the fabric.

These are both available in PBJ’s straight tapered fit at all stores and online now.

I love the overdyed warp denim from PBJ.  I've been wearing a jean made in this denim for a while and it fades really nice overtime.

Gotta love that. I would get them if I could justify it, but after a while I just want something different, new. idk. I love seeing fades and jeans that no one else has. Keeps the hunt fresh and brings me back to a time when jeans just weren't so available.

Sugar Cane Limited Edition Okinawa x Hawaii Type II Jackets & Made in USA 1947 Jeans

We’ve got a fun delivery from Sugar Cane this week.  We have a unique Type II denim jacket and a Made in USA deadstock denim 1947 jean.

The jacket is a limited edition version of Sugar Cane's Type II denim jacket mixing their famed Hawaii and Okinawa sugar cane fiber denim styles into one jacket. This is a wild jacket, and will look pretty amazing once the denim starts to fade and wear in. These are available in sizes 38 to 42, they don’t run small like some of their past jackets, and the unsanforized denim has been rinsed so there’s very little shrinkage once washed.

The Made in USA Sugar Cane 1947 is the closest you'll get to buying an affordable pair of unworn 501 jeans which are made in USA using the same Union Special and Singer machines used almost 100 years ago to cut and sew jeans in the US.

A classic cut modeled after what the original 501 was like in 1947. An amazing and timeless style; this cut stays true to the original from the rivets to the Made in USA deadstock denim.

Both the jacket and jeans are available at all stores and online in limited numbers.

Merino Wool Loopwheeled T-Shirts & Super Heavy Weight T-Shirts by Merz B. Schwanen

We have two very impressive releases from Merz this week.

First up have the world's first loopwheeled museling-free merino wool t-shirt.  These are the ultimate blank t-shirt.  They're cool and breathable when it's hot out and they're warm and cozy when it's cold out.  Quite amazing how something so natural is one of the ultimate "tech" fabrics.  These feel unreal and are available in black or natural.

We also have a set of new pocket t-shirts made of a newly developed heavy weight loopwheeled fabric.  This is the first time Merz has gone up to this weight class for their t-shirts and it's very impressive.  The fabric has an amazing hand feel and light loopwheel grain.  These are available with pockets in black or white.

All four of these t-shirts are available now online and in-stores.

I’ve got a merino wool tee from Outlier that I picked up years ago, could be a good replacement. Also are the XL and XXL measurements just duplicates of one another?

Measurements are now fixed, also note that the natural and black ones fit differently due to how the wool reacted to the rinse.

Anybody have the SE "Rave On" tee? I'm wondering how the graphics hold up to basic wash-n-dry laundering over time. Are the graphics more likely to fade and age but stay relatively intact, or do they slowly disintegrate? Thanks!

If you always wash them in cold, inside out, and line/air dry the graphics and the t-shirt will look fairly new for quite some time.  It's only hot water and/or a hot dryer that ages them, and all clothing to be honest.
