Self Edge, SF/NY/LA/PDX - updates & info

Are you suggesting that people should not machine wash their jeans?

I notice that your sizing advice almost invariably is given for a size that fits resultant from just a short cold soak.

Obviously this means that there is significant stretch still inherent in the fabric which wouldn't ever be realised until someone was to accidently put their jeans through a normal wash. I had a flat many years ago that didn't have a washing machine and so at the time my only recourse short of a laundrette was to wash my jeans in the bath. I could not ever imagine having to go through that again.

I'd go as far saying it is faintly ridiculous to take a hard wearing, working fabric such as denim and treat it with such kid gloves. But then again, we're all part of a faintly ridiculous community that spends so much on a pair of jeans... and with that I suppose comes with the routines and rituals of any passion...

They're just jeans and can be soaked in any manner as long as they're soaked initially and then washed somewhat regularly.  If you come into any of our stores or email us for washing/soaking advice we try to make the entire process as simple as possible, there is no need to baby the jeans during any of the process of soaking or washing or counting the exact days between washes, etc.

I was the guest on this week's Let There Be Talk, my first podcast recording!  I dislike my voice and freeze up anytime any audio is recorded so this was nerve-wracking for me, i'm scared to listen to it.  Dean Delray's Let There Be Talk podcast is sponsored by Rawr Denim and 3sixteen this week, listen to the episode because Rawr is giving away a $250 Self Edge gift card and 3sixteen is giving away one pair of jeans from their webstore.

Nowhere in that quote does it say hand wash - a modern washing machine has a cold water setting...

the cold soak that kiya is referring to is the initial soak that is recommended for unsanforized denim before you start wearing it so you can get the shrink out of the fabric. after that, the advice is to cold water machine wash your jeans and line dry.

It does explicitly state however 'cold soak' from which I infer that this is not in a machine, irrespective of cold setting.

There is no reason to put your jeans into a washing machine if all you're doing is soaking them because they're unsanforized.

Back on track, thanks.

Ah see now that is really what I'm getting at. We know that with many brands you just won't see full shrinkage with just an initial soak - and in fact full shrinkage is often not met until the second or third hot machine wash and in some cases machine dry as well.

Which gets me to the point, do you think a cold soak is enough then, and with subsequent wear stretching them back to raw or over to offset problematic shrinkage if they do end up in a hot wash?

edit; yes talking unsanforised.

You are making things more complicated than they need to be.  The jean will stretch and shrink and stretch and shrink over and over again quite a few times between soaking/washing and wearing.  There is no exact science to this because every denim reacts differently to wear and water.

We tell customers that the most important thing is that the jean fits well after the first soak after it's been worn for a few weeks, after that you can wash in cold water and line dry and let the jean do it's natural stretching and shrinking, after selling over 20,000 pairs of jeans over an 8 year people we've had very few people which had a problem with this method.

SEPDX just got a restock on 634s, 301s, and Beatle Busters, Riders Jackets, Sonny's Vest, and some accessories.  I've updated the online store, so if anybody has been waiting on anything….it's there.

Just listened to the podcast. I don't care much for the other guy's personality but it was a good discussion and I thought your voice was fine. :D

I also listened to the podcast and you both sounded fine to me but I totally understand how one can hate the sound of their own voice on a recording. I recall times when my voice teacher recorded recitals in high school and cringed at my recording every time.

Hahaha Cabo!

Thanks at the end! Looks like I need some 301s! Which reminds me, did the 301s change in size? I used to have the 9301s in 33 and I thought if I ever get the 301s to get a 32 which I would have sworn was a 32.5 waist, not a 33.5 waist as they are up there now...

We've updated the 301s measurements to represent the newest run of the jean on our site, so if you order a pair now you'll get a jean that measures what our chart shows now.

Love the 18oz IH-666 and the Wild Child wallet that I got from Self Edge so thought I would show how the wallet creates an interesting back pocket fade...I have only worn these jeans for about 6 months so I am guessing that the outline will get more prominent. Both the jeans and wallet are highly recommended!

Hey Kiya, are there photos of the pair of worn FH 3005 hanging up at the SF store? Just popped in there yesterday for a few and they looked amazing.

No sorry, we have no photos of those up anywhere.

Iron Heart Jeans, Jackets, Vests, & More

We've just received a large restock of the popular 301s jean from Iron Heart which now has a visible  selvedge outseam.  We worked with Iron Heart to tweak the way the outer leg is cut to preserve the selvedge edge of the fabric while maintaining the slim tapered fit the 301s is known for.  The product page has been updated with the new measurements to reflect this.

We've also received a full restock of the Beatle Buster jean, the 634s, 461, and 9634z jeans.  Along with all these jeans we've received Iron Heart's Type III jacket, rider's jackets in both indigo and Super Black, and Super Black denim vests.

All these jeans are available now at all four Self Edge stores and in our online store, check the appropriate product pages for more info, measurements, and high-res photographs.

Enjoyed this podcast very much. Had to laugh when Dean said "I could kick the drugs but not sweets and not shopping." Thought your voice sounded good, Kiya.

I would get a pair of the 301s from Iron Heart, the denim will probably last longer than their 25oz denim as we've found that their 21oz lasts the longest out of all their fabrics so far.  It's a slim fit similar to the 666, but maybe a hair slimmer down the leg.

The new SEXI23 Imperial collab comes out in June and will be available at all four of our stores.

Oh wow! These are the ones almost identical to the SExI14 correct?

Good interview, I understand the thing about hearing your own voice.  I am one of the kids that doesn't make enough to buy these jeans and still purchases $400 jeans, I do have to save my money for them though.

To win a $250 Self Edge gift card from Rawr Denim or a pair of jeans from 3sixteen answer one of the two questions Dean Delray is asking on his Twitter today from the Podcast below.
