England's Lil' NYC Trip

Shit, I should have added my nightclubs/bars post to this.........so, I am staying with someone who knows NYC fairly well, so obviously all the usual stops (MOMA, etc.) are taken care of. I made a little list of other types of places I want to visit (yeah, most are gimmicky, but I am alright with being a lame tourist).......any advice/additions to my list? Thanks!

Halal:

Dessert:

Bars/Nightlife:

Also:

I want to go out to a nightclub one of the nights I am there. I don't want to be anywhere that is insanely packed, or has a huge line, or has a ton of frat dudes. An older crowd is fine with me as long as it is easy to get in, has dancing and a cool atmosphere; prices don't matter.....I am bringing someone so I don't really need a "singles oriented" place persay. Is there anywhere like this in NYC?

Also, any recommendations for unique/interesting/fun bars would be awesome. I am going to hit up McSorley's (figure I might as well), and maybe Angel's Share. I don't really care about prices; I just want somewhere with a great atmosphere; somewhere I would only find in NYC. Also considering Milk and Honey......know anything about it?

Eh, thanks!

ahhhhh I was watching the food channel, and there is a place there, that serves belgian fries, and only belgian fries, it's a walk in tiny shop on the street level.

Okay I found it:

Pommes Frites

123 Second AvenueNew York, NY 10003Tel: (212) 674-1234

He heh. Yep, that is already on my list.

omg england you're the best. i been bugging new yorkers about where to get the best pizza

According to Yelp! where people write reviews for every restaurant under the sun, 99% of people say Grimaldi's and Lomardi's have the best pizzas in NYC. Then again, they might be tourist traps as well....

Calexico Taco Stand! In SoHo on the same block as Stussy. It's the cart on the southeast corner.

The best places to get food in the city probably won't have websites - if you're looking for Halal, pizza, etc.

Thanks man. I live in Cali, so it will be interesting to see just how authentic NYC Mexican is :P I will definitely check it out.

About the websites, I actually used Yelp.com a ton and surprisingly all the top rated places happened to have websites......call it luck I guess! Seems everyone is tech savvy these days!

My vote goes to Lombardi's. Both pizzeria have long lines but worth it. Pommes frites you got that right. Peter Lugar get reservations now. Don't bother about Mex food. You know in NYC the Chinese prepare Mexican and Latin American food here. Koreans run some Japanese restaurants. Mexicans prepare Italian food. It's really fucked up. I need to try that Halal food. go to Chowhound.com, it's the best fuck-Zagat resource online. Enjoy

go to darkroom late night when the frat crowd leaves and annex on friday or saturday to see musicians hangin out.past random sightings there include daniel from interpol, NOY and the killers. also, avoid williamsburg bars. bunch of wealthy out of towners moved there and roam the bars every weekend like it was hoboken.

Yeah, you're probably right.

Here is another one you can't miss: Crif Dogs.

http://www.newyorkmetro.com/listings/restaurant/crif-dogs/

newyorkmetro.com is a good resource for all things NYC.

Also, get a margarita "to-go" from El Sombrero in LES and take a walk.

personally, I dont see what's so spectacular about Grimaldi's. I mean its location is great for that savvy guy whose New York ends at Union Sq, and that definitely plays into the hype. the Bronx's Little Italy has pizza equal or superior in quality to grimaldi's, and for much less. Hell, even Johnny's up in Mount Vernon has better 'old world' pizza than grimaldi's, but it's not like you'll be in more than three boroughs for your trip england, non of which being the BX.

edit. have fun up there guy, i've been missing home

england, let me help you out, man.

Halal:

this is just regular street food. you'll find a billion halal carts in that area that serve more or less the same tasty, greasy halal specialties. but hey, at $5 for a meal and a drink, you can't go wrong, i guess.

pizza:

you're gonna get a bunch of different opinions on the best pizza in new york. let me give you mine: the original patsy's restaurant in east harlem. it's on 118th and 1st ave. although now that area is spanish harlem, a long time ago it was mostly italian. you can get pizza by the slice, or you can sit down and buy a pie. the best pizza in new york.

frank sinatra loved patsy's pizza so much, he actually had it flown from new york to los angeles whenever he felt the urge.

i've never been to the swanky downtown patsy's but i've heard that it's not as good as the one uptown. the pizza is great, i lived off it for years.

another favorite of mine for pizza is adrienne's pizza bar. in fact, i had some today. it's on 54 stone street in new york. you can eat outside and while drinking a nice glass of italian draft beer. very, very good pizza. not cheap, but hey, live a little.

dessert:

i'm not a big dessert guy, so i'll let the others take care of this one.

other:

bamn--come on, man. you're gonna go all the way to new york's st. mark's street just to buy a vending machine burger??? go, watch and move on. there's so many good places to eat in that area to spend money on crap like that.

pommes frites--again, you are at st. mark's where there are tons of great japanese eateries. pommes frites are just greasy french fries with special sauce.

if you are in the st. mark's area, why don't you go to kenka japanese restaurant? knowing you, england, you will love the yakuza pictures on the walls and the old post-war japanese memorabilia. beer is super cheap and the food is like authentic japanese izakaya food. at the end, you can make your own cotton candy.

there are other places, in that area which are awesome. send me a pm for more info.

places:

south street seaport--this is not a good idea. unless you like hanging out at the whackest place in the world.

if you want to shop, go to soho. make sure you go to BiG ;) on 8 greene street.

bars, clubs:

again, tons of great places, but don't know what your steez is.

He heh, thanks guys. I figured I would get some varied responses, especially about pizza.

Why is the South Street Seaport so bad? It looked like it had some cool boats/docks/cobblestone streets.......so it is basically just a shitty mall?

The Japanese place with the Yakuza pics sounds awesome....I will be sure to check it out. Maybe I will skip Bamn; I didn't really know what area it was in, and now hearing that it is out of the way/surrounded by good restaurants I will definitely skip.

Mizanation - I will definitely send you a PM closer to when I am going when I know exactly what I am going to be doing. Thanks for the recommendations.

uhm....beer milkshake? Sounds fucking awesome.

I will check out the hot dog place too. Shit, I am going to have the worst stomach ache while I am there......must try to only eat 3 meals a day; not gonna happen though.

if you want to shop, go to soho. make sure you go to BiG on 8 greene street

What is Big? I couldn't find anything about it on the net.......

Cosign!

Kenka is amazing - both the food and the atmosphere. Sometimes there is a wait - but it's worth it.

The Seaport is aweful.

Bingo. It is a mall.

don't sleep on 2nd ave deli, either!

Didn't they close because the rent got too expensive? Last I checked they didn't re-open in a new location yet.

2nd Kenka and Pomme Frites. I'm there all the time. Great late night eats. Right in that area is a bar called Angel's Share, which is hidden upstairs behind a door in a yakitori restaruant. Awesome atmosphere and some of the best drinks in NYC. Note that this is a place to enjoy your cocktail, not to be a rowdy jackass or hit on people. They've a strict no standing, no yelling, no parties larger than 4 policy.

I'm going to recommend Room4Dessert over Chickalicious. Better bang for your buck imho. If you are into tapas goto Tia Pol.

yeah, angel's share is actually a japanese style martini bar. england seems to be the kind of guy who could get rowdy after a couple drinks, so might not be the place for him. ;)

yeah, 2nd ave deli has been shut down for a while....

oh fuck.

i totally skipped going on this recent trip, and i hadn't been in nyc since feb. 05 (or whenever the gates were up in the park)...

it was good to have options when you wanted nothing other than the best pastrami sandwich on earth...

(and some pickles)
