So here is the fit, sorry for the weird lighting:DSCF3919.thumb.jpg.aba261c9d52e657be997ac51ce83eb16.jpgDSCF3924.thumb.jpg.d7d613165477a98e1b5ebad77dfe5ad7.jpg

I pretty much love the way these fit, they are the perfect compromise with a generous top block and a decent taper. The construction on them is like nothing else I have in my closet and I can't help but echo Chicote with finally getting the allure of a pair of Roy's. My one gripe is the fabric is a bit plain and regular but it is also in that awkward phase right before it really comes alive, so I'll make my final judgment at the end of the tour.

Now on to where these are going. I'm heading up to SF for work tomorrow (Fly in and out the same day :( ) so I'll snap some pics of what I'm doing. My Mom comes into town Friday afternoon so I'm sure we will be doing the tourist deal so I'll try to get as much of it documented as possible, gonna try and stay as far away from the Hollywood strip as possible but I might be convinced to head down there. Next up is Memorial Day, my wife and I have a 3 day weekend so I'm hoping to get out to Joshua Tree or down the coast to Laguna Beach for some beach days! Other than that, these will probably see the inside of a bouldering gym more than once and possibly a crag or two out in the wilds.

More too come....

Hey guys, sorry for the delay, I've had some camera issues the last few days (both phone and real camera) anyway I have a small update, that I thought some of you might find interesting. I currently work in Tech in the electric car space. I'm working on Product for our cars and doing a bit of vehicle hacking to get them to do things from our backend rather than from inside the car (honk, send alerts, etc.). Anyway I've been working with a Raspberry Pi setup to get most of the data off the cars ECU (car brain) through the CANbus (networked components) and I think it's super fun and cool, so bare with me while I show you guys what I'm doing ;) .

IMG_0914.thumb.JPG.37f5a9794e3df538e3543bc1abfaff12.JPG

Here is a Raspberry PI with an extra CAN controller on top of it that I cooked up. Basically what this does is pull the raw data off of the car and dumps it into a file so I can see what the car is doing at any given time (ignition, accelerator, radio, etc.) this is all proprietary to the vehicle manufacturer so it is a bit of trial and error to figure out what does what but once you do, you can pretty much make the car do that command by typing in the code and sending it through the CAN. What I'm looking for is fairly innocuous but if someone was really industrious they could do stuff like kill the breaks remotely....

IMG_0918.thumb.JPG.5abfb08309b91eddfaf7c630271e389e.JPG

Here is the basic data stream coming from the car. Each one of those lines of code is a function taking place in the vehicle, not super exciting but the potential here is pretty crazy...

Anyway sorry to bore all of you with a super technical post, I promise to have a more Los Angeles centric, visually appealing post this weekend.

In the meantime here is a shot of the pants from today:

Alright, guys time for an update after the long weekend.

I started my weekend Friday night with a few friends in from Berlin, but sadly I have nothing to show from that (a bit too many beers).

Anyway, Saturday started out with a BIG breakfast to fight away a massive hangover. We went to a local dinner in Echo Park called Bright Spot, where I ate this a massive breakfast quesadilla and ~5 cups of coffee.

IMG_0988.thumb.JPG.04ecaa04a896e981be9b9fcc0883f1fa.JPG

Next up my wife and I felt like a hair of the dog so we headed out to Highland Park to grab a beer and do a bit of furniture shopping. We went to a nice beer bar called Block Party, where we sat out on the porch enjoying the sun and a bit of relief from our hangovers.

Next up we walked a bit down the street to go check out some furniture at a place called The Hunt, sadly nothing was purchased :(

After The Hunt we went to Col-Lab gallery to check out the tail end of an art show they were putting on. Sadly most of the art had been purchased and pulled from the wall but they had these great birthday cards based on famous serial killers:IMG_1024.thumb.JPG.3a5e1dc8d06cf94af35e112a62430af8.JPGIMG_1023.thumb.JPG.d3e5daeb8ef356c590ca052018f4e073.JPGIMG_1022.thumb.JPG.c842578f184ef8ba5f0b6e26155d1337.JPG

On Sunday we got the chance to get out of the city to Switzer Falls up in the San Gabrial Mountains. Switzer is about a 25min drive away from our house in Silver Lake and it could almost be a world away from the massive city of Los Angeles:IMG_1042.thumb.JPG.97c0ba02c040dec5f59ebaf71f4f37c8.JPG

Last up I took the time Sunday to spend some time in the bouldering gym. I headed in early to see if I could beat the crowds but being Memorial Day there were a ton of people there. The Roy's did fairly well but I'm used to the much wider thigh of my Tenders, or my stretchy climbing pants, so I felt a bit restricted.

^just started to get back into it in the last 6 months and spend most of my time in the gym bouldering. I'll be competing in a comp today so I'll post up some pics of that.

in the mean time here are the Roy's with my big E jacket and Contax:

So today I went to LA Boulders for the kickoff of the Los Angeles Touchstone climbing series. Basically, the way the comp works is it's an open free for all scored on the honor system, ie first attempt = higher points than the subsequent attempts afterward all done on a scorecard. It's a really great way to get a bunch of people on a bunch of climbs and have it go all day without much logistics. Anyway today I climbed in the Roy's which gave me a bit of trouble (thigh is a bit snug) but all in all, I was fairly happy with my performance, flashed a couple v5's and finally managed, not one but two v6 problems.

We are rather spoiled here with climbing gyms. Touchstone has 3 gyms with one more on the way, and there are 3 more gyms from other companies in the area. LAB the one I went to today is actually the smallest of the Touchstone gyms in Los Angeles, the largest, Cliffs of Id has 26,000 sqft of climbing.......

Hey this is a bit overdue, work has been crazy but here is my trip to the Rose Bowl flea 2 weeks ago:

This was at 9am, shit get's even crazier as the day goes on...

First stop of the day was over the bridge to where all of the vintage clothes lives and I immediately came across this pristine Big E:

Next up was a pair of was a pair of 60's Big E 501's that were way out of my price range $500, which I also failed to photograph :(

Lastly, I picked up this rad vintage Rat Fink shirt, that I'm super excited about:

@FeloniousMonk That's right! Thanks for remembering. I'll be there from July 8th to the 17th with my wife and father-in-law. We'll be going in and around the Ring Road hiking, camping, etc. Any recommendations for anything out of the beaten path for those that have been?

Also, @Hendsch I'll PM you my address.

nice. my aunt went last year, although it was around november/ december, so the sights could be a little different. they did some touristy stuff like the geysir, northern lights and stuff. it looks really beautiful from the photos. not sure how their summer is like though. on another note, i read somewhere that iceland has a more women to men ratio...

I just received the Roys from @Hendsch! This is the first time I've ever worn or fondled a pair of Roys but, as everyone else had said, the construction is impeccable. I find myself staring down the inseam looking at the SPI more often than not.

With regard to fit, they've made me realize that I've put on some weight in my butt/thighs making them much tighter in the seat than the 3009s I'm used to.. :/ Nevertheless, I will soldier on and plan on wearing them as much as I can on my trip to Iceland next week!

Below I attached some quick fit pics; they're actually lighter in person, borderline Wrangler-esque in comparison to the inky blue of the 3xxx denim.

EDIT: Below are some comparisons of the Roys with some of my more worn jeans. They're from left to right Samurai S710xx (worn for ~2 years [essentially retired]), Sugar Cane Okinawa (worn for ~1.5 years [infrequent rotation]), The Flat Head 3009 (worn for ~8 months [mainstay in rotation]), and the Roys. The bright Summer Sun washed out their true color so they're a bit darker in real life.20170704_105128.thumb.jpg.432757b7397e67bcac564a76c37c3277.jpg20170704_105249.thumb.jpg.046bbaecdbc8b8ae32ca912738bf4ad5.jpg

Hi all, my wife and I are back from our 8 day trip to Iceland. We took ~2k photos (of varied quality) in order to vividly remember the trip. We rented a car, took the Ring Road around the country, and stopped at various spots we found interesting. For example, we didn't stop by the Blue Lagoon (far too pricey and overcrowded with tourists [an issue Iceland is presently facing]), Geysir, waterfalls (Gullfoss, Godafoss, Detifoss, etc.), and others.

From Chicago, we took an evening flight from O'Hare to Reykjavik and landed there around 6 in the morning. Because we didn't want to be jet lagged, we decided to power through the first full day by quickly checking out the city and a few other spots before our stop to Skogafoss in the south. Among many things, we passed by the Hallgrímskirkja Church. IMG_20170709_095103.thumb.jpg.e54b44856807fcc3f6c13a08c0eba0b7.jpg After seeing a few sights in Reykjavik, we stopped by Þingvellir National Park about an hour outside of the city. This is where the European (?) and North American Plates split and where Iceland's Parliament during their early settlement period. It's also where, I believe, they filmed the Bloody Gate from Game of ThronesIMG_20170709_144518.thumb.jpg.8255b4b2814f80d2c8a4c6c6681b8607.jpg Then we headed south on the Ring Road. We stopped by Bobby Fisher's grave in Selfoss; my father-in-law came with us and is an avid chess player so he wanted to pay respects. We also stopped by the Seljalandsfoss waterfall off the highway. It's supremely gorgeous and you can take a quick 15-minute walk around and behind it.IMG_20170709_194540.thumb.jpg.9d5b3d64d51f0812c8e7773cee4ca718.jpg We then camped out at Skokafoss.

On the second day, we spent the entirety of this day on a long day hike called Fimmvörðuháls hike. It's a 9-12 hour hike that ascends ~1,000 meters in between two glaciers and near the Eyjafjallajökull volcano that last erupted in 2010 that disrupted flights in/out of Europe for some time.IMG_20170710_075221.thumb.jpg.b60610ae1116c0c7ee03f256f3d4742c.jpgIMG_20170710_083635.thumb.jpg.8e49faa570282c92287c7f75d9e705de.jpgIMG_20170710_143641.thumb.jpg.3cea890cf4632c85edb78da27ce815d5.jpgIMG_20170710_153021.thumb.jpg.aecc15c5dd8c5d56d0b23faa07a2879d.jpgIMG_20170710_164547.thumb.jpg.0d84e5b61336f2bc5fac1a8a014bdb92.jpg

On the third day, we left Skogafoss, headed South, stopped by the black beaches of the south coast in Vik, checked out the glacier lagoon of Jökulsárlón, and camped in Hofn for the night. IMG_20170711_095749.thumb.jpg.62e6fbb13ce282613dec3500a0cf56a0.jpgIMG_20170711_185009.thumb.jpg.0eeb2cdcb897749a4bd09ad1dd85373b.jpgIMG_20170711_185755.thumb.jpg.aa091ad5fe51d1f3952538996841c4d5.jpg

More pictures to be added soon.
