Denim Blunders, Reflections and General Nonsense.

^Always thought he was a cool dude the times I spoke with him, etc. I'd hate to see them starting to cut corners or lowering quality; I thought they took over Denime to make it more of a "mall" brand? RMC shouldn't go the same way

2 of my pet photo hates in denim forums

1. Food shots. Really? Save it for Instagram, I'm not interested at all

2. Driving shots. Why? It's f***ing dangerous. Hands on the wheel and eyes on the road people.

Rant over!

ahaha guilty as charged...In my defense though, I prefer to mix it up. I'm the biggest denim head I know IRL, but even on a denim dedicated forum such as superdenim I don't mind seeing what everyone else is up to in their daily lives. Looking at dudes in denim can get kind of monotonous at times. And personally, I consider our niche pretty gluttonous (spending $300+ on jeans?!), so I like to assume we're all gluttons of other things as well, whether it be denim, food, boots, jewelry, photography, etc. If one were to look through my photos on my phone, it'd likely be 80% food, so only fitting I feel it worthy to share :D

Personally I spend a lot more money over the course of a year on food and drinks than clothing, so I quite like seeing food pics. However, I can see how it would be annoying if you come only for concentrated doses of denim.

guilty as charged, too...but in my defense I can say that I don't own a driving license and my driving pictures are strictly from the passenger's seat perspective. Totally save!

@dudewuttheheck My favorites are/were Elijah Craig 18 (if you can find it), Bookers, Noah's Mill and Rowans Creek.

Thanks! I think I can find Elijah Craig 18 near me. I'll be looking up the others as well.

@dudewuttheheck my personal favourite is 1792. There's several variations and I'm yet to try one I didn't like!

I know they have some of that near me. I'll have to pick it up. My current go to is Angel's Envy for bourbon and Lagavulin 16 for scotch

Was ~2010 really peak raw denim?

I started wearing raw denim around then, and I was the only one I knew in the US. At all. Absolutely nobody else I ever ran into in Atlanta had even heard of it. I might've seen someone wearing Nudie at my college in my final semester around that time. Once.

This board seemed to reach its peak activity between 2005-2009 or so, but since then the number of people actually familiar with raw denim in my area has absolutely exploded. I can count on one hand the number of guys who are real fanatics of the degree that they'd post on forums, but I now know lots of guys who have a mild/moderate interest in it, and there are tons and tons of stores (back in 2010 there was Self Edge, Blue In Green, and maybe one or two others like Context.) It's really hard for me to believe that 2010 or so was really the height of public awareness/trendiness.

Also, I completely zone out when the discussion goes to food/alcohol/etc. This is basically why I never read/post on threads like What Are Your Jeans Doing Today.

You have a point there Kyle. 2009 to 2010 was perhaps peak Superdenim, but Japanese raw denim nowadays is more popular than ever among casual enthusiasts, I think. This is especially evident where I live, the denim scene has just slowly come alive in the last year or two it seems.

I think old forums like this one and the old denim blogs are nowadays replaced by more 'discussion-lite' platforms like reddit and Instagram.

With information much more available now, and knowledge being widely disseminated, there is less need for detailed forum postings. Platforms like IG encourage more direct marketing and more socialising, it's little wonder new hobbyists are drawn to these newer platforms.

IMO for the forum to continue or even thrive, we must ensure 'high yield' or at least good quality content. Too many food and drink posts dilute the relevance of Superdenim and I think will result in less and less denimheads swinging by. Guys who want to share their breakfasts or their alcoholic beverages could perhaps use Instagram instead.

But then what is ‘peak selvedge’ anyway? Raw denim became more and more common that’s why you encounter more people. But I really think the workwear trend (think lumbersexual) which brought a lot of people to raw denim is over and now you see a bigger focus on tech-wear. At least that is my impression.

Maybe it was rather ‘peak selvedge’ around the forums? And forums are rather dying with quicker social media platforms like Instagram or Reddit.

For a forum you need more time and the things you can talk about are limited. So by 2010 the “myths” were already solved to a large degree. Most talk nowadays is about new released. Technical questions are not that common anymore, at least on Sufu. As Reddit has a lot of traffic from novices you still have a lot of talk about the basics over there. Also the way Reddit works doesn’t help to hinder the repetitive questions.
That said, I found the revival of the world tours and contest very surprising especially since they work again. Maybe it was just too much contests and tours in 2009-2013? But I am more than happy to follow those contest and tours!
