What does 'rise' refer to?

Recommended Posts

The height of the fly, usually measured starting from the bottom of the J-stitch (where the crotch meets the two inner thigh seams) and extending to the top of the waist.

IMO the term "rise" has to be examined more than it usually is.

Take

1) a pair of low-crotch (skate-) pants with the waistband sitting low on the hip.

2) a pair of pants with reg or high (ball-squeezing) crotch and waistband sitting high, where the wearer's true waistline is located.

1) and 2) might measure the exact same rise, but are totally different in fit and style. 1) would be called low-rise and 2) would be called high-rise.

So I figuered that the term "rise" as used in low-rise or high-rise has actually not always something to do with the actual measurement of the rise.

(And there are different ways to measure the rise, too. Some maesure the curve, some measure straight, and this can be a significant difference)

Rise is always the measurement from the crotch seam to the top of the waist band. Many jeans have different rise measurement in the front and back - higher in back, lower in front. It does not indicate exactly where the jeans will sit on the body other than a low rise will sit lower and high rise will sit higher. Body shape and jean shape dicatate how low or high the waist will actually be on any given person.
