outfit for prom

well, it's that time of year again. i'm 5'10.5" 135lbs asian; looking for a slim fit tux/suit for prom. went over to a well-respected local stockist today and was told that rentals would basically be awkward fitting for me, even if they were to alter them. i'm sure they would be, "alright" though.

anyway, buying a tux is like $1100 for boss red line. not worth it if i'm going to wear a tux maybe three times in my life, and i'm probably still growing.

now the question is, must i wear a tux to prom? i know most, if not all guys at my school are just going to be renting tuxes, but zara has some nice slim-fit knockoffs that look decent enough, and would probably fit better than a rental.

the guy at the store said that i shouldn't wear white (i wanted to, seriously) and shouldn't wear a cummerbund. i also wanted a shawl collar, and he said that they don't make shawl collar jackets for the smaller sizes/slim fit suits.

what does superfashion think? go to zara? rent a suit and deal with it? or just bite the bullet and pay for boss red?

In High-School (depending on the kinda you attend), I don't really believe it's necessary to even buy a nice tux for that time. (Like you said, you're still possibly growing so it might not even be worth it).

As I've also noticed is that most dus in HS usually go to the tux rental, or buy a cheap-shit suit at H&M. (Which fits slightly better due to the slim-fit, as opposed to a tux rental where the trousers and such will be a bit bigger fitting).

If it were me personally, I'd say to go with the Zara-tux given your options, depending on how you'd feel it fits and if it fits well.

Blowing 1.1k on a suit for prom when you might grow out of it seems a bit absurd to me. (Then again there's always tailors. Again, this is given your expenses and financial situation).

I agree, H&M or Zara, it's temporary anyway.

Not worth it to slurge xxxx amount of dollars for HS grad.

ah damnit, i didn't think about how prom can get messy. but even if i go with zara i could still just get it dry cleaned for the next time i need to wear it.

also, forgive me if i'm wrong (i suck at formalwear) but the tux jacket and a suit jacket/blazer don't have any difference other than the satin material of the pocket, right?

does zara sell jacket/slacks sets? or would i have to pick out separate blazers and slacks and hope that they match?

stop asking questions about a store in the mall that sells suits for less than some people from this board spend on shoelaces

Zara sells blazer/trouser sets, just sold separately. Right now the "tuxedo" blazers they have for the most part don't have matching trousers; at least the shawl collared ones. But there are choices as far as pants go that go well enough so that you can mix and match. This kid came in the other day and bought the white tux blazer with black shawl collar and a random pair of slim black pants for his prom, I think it looked nice.

Also, prom iz srs bznz. No, just kidding. It's prom, just wear whatever you want and have fun.

a boss suit is a waste of money no matter how rich/poor you are. buy a simple suit from zara/etc and you will have it for a any future interviews, events you might have. I have no idea how much it costs to rent a tux but I am sure buying something from zara wouldn't be much more and you won't look like a dork.
