Shoes that look better with age...

Recommended Posts

Currently requesting quotes from the cream of UK cobblers, and boot restorers to do something with my Whites SD's. I have sent an email to the 10 most highly recommended cobblers in the UK, with pics of my boots, and pics of what I want doing to them, interested to see what they come back with.

Failing that, I'll just ship them to Whites, have my arm ripped off by the postage costs and customs, but enjoy a great quality, relatively cheap resole.

You shouldn't have to pay customs for a resole. That's what russell mocs told me anyway.

Who are you emailing here? I think most will find the white's stitch-down construction unusual.

Bear in mind that C&J are only open in the morning I think.

Your first trip? Let us know what C&J are charging these days.

Some random Tricker's porn to lead us into the weekend...shame their factory shop isn't open on Saturdays, as I've just decided to pop over to Northampton tomorrow to see how the land lies.

Crockett & Jones and Church's, please have some decent shoes in 9.5 and boots in a 10 in preparation...

Three names that I can remember are taylormadeshoes, twigg-shoes and fcrepairs. Do you have any suggestions for anyone who might be able to add a second layer of leather midsole, and a vibram composition half sole?

Cheers, clocked that - planning on an early trip over anyway, it's only an hour on the train. Think Lobb and Church's are the only others open on Saturdays, will check out Edward Green and Tricker's another time.

It's C&J that I'm heading to, primarily, either for a pair of Handgrades or boots (an Islay would be a bloody good call); I spoke to the manager of the C&J shop in Brum yesterday and he reckoned you were looking at around £150ish for Benchgrade and £200+ for Handgrade and boots, which seemed a little cheaper than I expected but we should know by this time tomorrow...

Tried the Shoehealer in Doncaster? Richard Smith is a great help there...

That price seems pretty good. Not hugely increased since I last went. Unlike trickers.

The problem with C&J is that they are often quite limited in the stock there... You have to be quite lucky or flexible. Trickers seemed to always have a lot more available.

The prices he quoted were spot on, don't think I saw anything there more than a couple if hundred quid. Nothing for me unfortunately, but I did get an impromptu tour of the middle floor of the factory and made a couple of useful contacts there (no one forgets a shoe-loving tattooed Brummie in a hurry!).

Some lovely stuff there in larger sizes, including the Coniston, Northcote and some kind of Handgrade suede brogue boot model I'd not seen before.

I wasn't tempted by the saddle shoes in my size, even at only £80...

The shoes in Lobb were predictably beautiful but at £600 upwards were a little more than I'd planned on spending.

Church's had by far the best selection in all sizes, and some pretty unusual models (including a monkey boot and a beautiful buck and canvas spectator) but nothing that I really fancied.

A pretty decent daytrip though, and I'm grateful for crepe soles having covered a good few miles traipsing from place to place...

I have, just awaiting a response now.

Taylormadeshoes have come back to me with a price of £115, and a two week turn around, on a double leather midsole, and a composition half sole.

So i'm considering a pair of SDs, but i've got relatively low arches. I'm kinda stuck as to what size to actually get, considering i might throw insoles in them. Maybe this is more of a question to ask White's, themselves. any advice is good advice though

Speaking of boondockers, I'm looking for a little help re-finding a japanese site I came across a few weeks ago and promptly neglected to bookmark. It was a site selling WW2 reproduction stuff, including a really nice pair of roughout boots; I can't offer up more than that, but they had a lot of close-up comparison shots with their stuff and original items. Prices were around $300/pr - right in between the WW2 Impressions stuff and the Toys McCoys.

Living in Eugene O.R. puts you in the best place to find your white's size, 2nd only to living in spokane. Go to baker's shoes like smittybat suggests and they will sort you out. They probably have a few sizes for you to try on as well.

evo of my mister freedom road champs. thanks to the best dog ever, who did the worst thing ever. Hank, my four year old chocolate lab has recently decided he likes leather.

Edit: I've tried resizing this picture 4 times. I can't figure out, too tired. I'll try again tomorrow.
