Shoes that look better with age...

Picked up a pair of NOS Herman Survivors for my son... Steel toe, but he said they're very comfortable.... We're both breaking in new boots this week....

Wow...I haven't heard about Herman Survivors in many years! They were a coveted brand when I was growing up. They were a solid option along with the venerable Timberland work boots in the early 80's in my neck of the woods. Brings back memories.

And why do you guys get them leather lined? They're already leather lined in the whole toe and heel area....?

Some of the leathers that White's uses are too thin to be taken without lining.

Does the standard Dress Leather fall into the 'thin' category? I'm still considering different options on the SD's and have pretty much settled on brown dress leather but haven't made a final decision on lining them or not.

The standard dress leather is very thick and I don't think needs a lining.

I'm finally no longer broke and looking to buy a pair of Whites.

Unfortunately I've moved on from Alden boots...not satisfied with the quality I've seen from them lately.

How are whites in terms of durability? I know everyone says as tough as a tank but does anyone have wear pictures/wear experiences as examples?

100% agreed. I own the semi dress in the standard dress, unlined, and they are very thick. To line it would only be advisable if youre trying to make a snow boot.

i lined my black Horween leather chormexcel Bounty Hunters, and i find them very comfortable. i prefer lined boots, a more finished feeling inside, easier on my socks.

Thanks for your thoughts guys.

i'm looking for some nice dressy-ish shoes (derby, buck or double monk), but can't find anything reasonably priced.

i've been scouring ebay. and come up with nothing. any ideas from anyone?

call the Allen Edmonds factory shop in Port Washington, WI, ask for the list of discontinued shoes in your size, I bought several from them. IIRC it's $100 each.

Ben, Eric Spencer replied my email and they aren't returning VAT, so no deal again for me...

Yeah , I agree about what was said to Paul , maybe there were reasons for this or maybe it is true ? I would suppose the quality of the sole/heel comes into play . My Sanders heels have taken a lot of walking and are starting to show it . I am now just starting to alternate them with the Malton .How have the heel/soles on your Grasmere held up ? Be interested to hear of anyones experiences of the ITSHIDE sol/heel .

I dont think the zug grain uppers would be an issue though .

Remember, the story about veldt re-soling comes from tricker's, who don't favour it! For the resole everything depends on how the resole is done and how they shave/clean up the extended edge of the outers.

I will get a commando on these shoes soon, from a veldt specialist and report back. Might buy a couple of matching heel pieces, as it's those I seem to run through.

Killer b, nice job! Wearing my v shoes & boots in a field in Somerset, tramping thru cow dung, what they were made for!
