the jeans shrunk as planned.. love the colour on these. The previous owner bought a size 34 leg and then hemmed them (why) so I stretched the hell out of them and hung them upside down in the airing cupboard and managed to claw back an inch so I could keep the cuffs. Hardly any fading for what was apparently a years worth of wear.. so I used a minimum of Mr. Black and tub washed them at 40°c for an hour with some mild. agitation. Lost little to no indigo.
pleased with the result.. these are certainly the “cowboy jeans” In my collection now.

before fit, wash, dry, after:

these jeans were advertised as a rare model Valencia street san fransico USA levi s. but there are certain giveaways, upon seeing the jeans in person, lead me to believe these jeans have had their inner label swapped. also, the crotch was in need of repair. these appear to be Bulgarian made jeans, not american. I can provide more details if necessary.

2 photos attached, one of hole in crotch and one of waist measurement, which is 16.5 laid flat = W33. these jeans are supposed to shrink down from 32 inches. size is wrong.

701 are ladies jeans. the inner tag says 44701. it should say 44501 as they are supposed to be 501s. nothing about these jeans makes any sense, also they don't fit and the crotch damage is much more serious than shown in the pictures and needs repairing. there is a hole in the crotch. the first picture attached is the label from these jeans. they read 44701 etc. the second is from another pair of 1944 501s, and they correctly read 44501. 701 denotes that that label came from a pair of ladies levis (701) what they are doing on a pair of 501's I don't know, but the sizing is all wrong and this leads me to believe that these are not 555 (valencia st) jeans. apart from the fact they don't fit and the crotch needs repair, is enough to warrant a return.

these appear to a pair of Frankenstein jeans.. they are a 33 inch waist.. way too big for me, they were supposed to be unsanforized and would have shrank to at least 31".. these are huge and even longer in the legs.. they are like 35" legs, which should have shrank around 3 inches to a 32". then I realised the inner tag says 701, so it appears as though the tag has been taken from a pair ladies 701 jeans for some reason. which explain as to why the sizing is different.

my favourites are the 1955s and the 1933s. I like the wide fit of those jeans. my 1955's are a 30W (my usual size) but they were a W31, my 1890s ended up a little too skinny for my liking. my 1955s in a size a little large, and a wide leg, turned me onto more roomy jeans. and the thing with the massive 1944's taught me that its alright if the jeans are an inch or too bigger. so no more buying W30 for me...

those modern ones I got just before I got into raw denim and vintage style jeans so I don't wear them, and those 2006 ones are just a relic in my drawer from my college days..

So the three original models that were released by Lvc, 1937 201XX, 1955 501XX and 1963 551ZXX were all made with Japanese milled denim - although from which mill l am unsure. These 3 models ran from 1996-99.

In 1999, Lvc released 2 new models for one run only, the 1944 s501XX and the 1947 501XX, both of which were made with Cone denim. All had the infamous 555 stamped on the backs of the buttons.

Between late 2000 and 2002, when the Valencia st plant shut, the only 501XX models produced for Lvc had added finishes/washes/patching etc; They were all 'limited' versions. But basically no raw 44s, 47s or 55s until the production was moved to the San Antonio factory (the last Levis owned one) where the only raw models produced were the 1944 and the 1955 iirc. These had the 554 stamp on the button backs.

The only exception to the above was the (re)introduction of the 1937 model. This time though it was re-stamped as the 1937 501XX and was made with Cone. It was made at the  Valencia st factory for a short time (so 555 stamp) before continuing to be made at the Taylor Toggs facility in Greensboro NC (later versions of the model had 643M stamped) as did the 1901 model when it was introduced that year. From then on l think it was standard for all the post 1915 Lvc models to be made with Cone and any before that (excluding the 1917) to be made from Japanese milled denim, although the fugly 1927 model which l have a suspicion was made with non-cone(?)

I have 2 pairs of 1947s with a 554 stamp on the button.

If you look back at my statement, l did say iirc (if l recall). It's hard to remember the exact details of every model of every year and l do get it wrong from time to time like any other human denim enthusiast :D

Are they used/worn or raw still? Would be nice have some shots of the back pocket/s arcs. Wonder if they are the missing puzzle for me, template wise.

I was doing a raw 1947 stock take and came across the 554s along with a couple of 555s. There were also number of Rs. I have put some of my 1955s in order but forgot to look at the buttons on them. I will get the 1947s out again at some stage and photograph them. The 1955s were made of  lots of different denim.

It's not just, "If I recall," but, "If I recall/remember correctly."

Was looking at '555' made stuff on ebay yesterday (prices continue to be ridiculous, considering what you are getting for your money) and came across the distressed version of the 213, which l haven't got photos of but did do a screenshot of the silver lined white wash tag. The factory code is 822 not 555. The button codes coincide too.

20210208_131133.jpg

I used to own the 213 and mine had the 555 codes on button backs and internal wash tag. A little bit more searching on ebay brought up a couple of 125th Anniversary/1st blue jean models (the synthetic versions), both of which are identical but for the fact that they are made in different US factories. So one has 555 codes and the other 822 codes.

So my question is, does anyone know which factory (it must've a been Levis owned one?) had this 822 factory code??

According to Paul T’s 501 Guide (which you’ve probably seen, 822 was an unknown Levi’s factory used by LVC around 2001. So not much help!

However, according to my Japanese Levi’s book, the only other (excluding Valencia St and San Antonio) Levi’s factories still listed as open in 2001 were: El Paso, Texas; Blue Ridge, Georgia; San Benito, Texas; and Brownsville, Texas.

Here are some pics of a pair of 554 1947s from American Classics at a list price of £105 (before the discount they usually offered me).
