@propellerbeanie

Very professional looking postings on Grailed.

Excellent descriptions.

Many thanks, mate. Takes a bit of effort but it's worth it because people don't need to ask many questions if I'm thorough

501xxc??? Never seen that one before. Interestingly, that tag on the inside reads "37201", so is this after they decided against calling a 37 501, a 201?

You know, I am not too sure. I’m hoping some others can shed more light on these if possible hopefully.

It looks as if 1890s, 1937s, 1944s, 1966s, 1967s and 1976's will not be featured next season, judging by the 40% discount now being applied, and that Type I and Type 2 jackets may also be endangered.

On second thoughts perhaps they are clearing stock to replace it with more authentic reproductions.

Hi all. been stalking this thread since last summer.

I had a non raw pair of Levis "premium" jeans with big E, in a W30 L30, my usual size. then immediately after getting this pair, I got into raw denim. this W30 I felt was too big

my first pair was an 1890 501 in a W30 L34. I chose W30 because I expected it to shrink to a W28, which was what I was guessing my size must be, because of the other big levi's.These jeans didn't shrink all that much.

next, after deciding I like the 1976 501, I decide to get this in a W28 L34. (cone denim) and this is what I came here to talk about. this is what happened.

these shrank wayyyyyyy more than the 1890s. first thing I learned; later denim shrinks a hell of a lot more and is a hell of a lot more heavy and rigid. these were like carboard, were too tight, hurt my balls. I had to return them. and yes, Levi's were kind enough to refund me even after I shrank them.

afterwards I figured maybe I needed a 29W. but there was no size to be found, there was a W30 which I thought would be too big, becuase of my older pair.

then I acquired a Lee 101Z 1948 13oz japanese denim in a 29W. guess what.. the waist is huge.. but as these were an ebay steal, I decided to get them altered. they are now PERFECT.

I kept looking out for more 1976 stock in a 29W.. and I kept waiting.. until I decided to get a W30 L34 pair, because there were in the christmas sale. they are the new bulgarian ones. how will they compare? stay tuned..

I can't believe Levi's refunded you for a de-tagged and shrunk pair of Rigid LVCs. User error, and they are the ones who end up losing a bunch of money. Very generous move.

They didn't even look that tight shrunk. Tighter jeans than that were the norm in the '70s and '80s, which this cut is based on. And it sounds like you didn't even give them time to relax back out (which they definitely would have done). You could have worn them wet-to-dry, and all the stretch you could get from them would have happened in a day.

28 was not a wise choice, based on a size 30 in 1890s feeling loose. The '76s are a slim-hipped cut. The 1890s are a loose-hipped cut. Sizing properly isn't about tag sizes and waistbands. It's about cuts, and the actual measurements of the hips and the thighs. You should have gone with the 30s in the '76s.

The "later denim shrinks more" conclusion is not only wrong IME, but it cannot even reasonably be made unless you actually took detailed pre and post wash measurements from all styles of LVCs, and washed and dried them all identically. Anecdotally based conclusions based on two models should be taken with a grain of salt by all reading. I would venture to guess that what you felt was the difference between a relaxed fitting cut sewn in lighter weight denim, and a tight fitting cut sewn in heavier weight denim...two tag sizes smaller.

You got lucky with Levi's being very kind to you. I would simply take the exchange for a pair of 30s, consider yourself very lucky, and come away from the situation hopefully better educated.

The 1890s can be washed hot and machine dried hot to maximize shrinkage. You can also cinch them up, obviously. That's what it's for.

Well, I had already paid full price for those 1890s.. if they had not been so generous I would have thought twice about buying from them again. I can't fault them at all. I wondered if those 28's would stretch back out, but I didn't want to risk weeks of discomfort to test that theory. I made the right decision anyway, the 30s are much better. I have tried them on and they feel miles better.

for those wondering if they can see any differences with the new Bulgarian 76's, here are the raw fit pics:

shrinking day is tomorrow.

@andyrcii

I would not feel guilty one bit about getting a refund from Levis. It is a huge profit-oriented global corporation that overcharges for inferior products because of name recognition earned but forfeited long ago. Their cost on that returned pair of LVC was not even the size of a mosquito fart in their profits and was worth far more to them as positive PR for you coming on this forum and describing your positive experience.

Good on ya!

yes, they do. I forget the actual wording.. I'll let you know/ show the tag once I get them off. they are drying on me as I type this.

I am very pleased with them.. I wanted a 36 leg because the W28 cones shrank so much in the leg that I couldn't cuff them. 34 was the longest I could get.

They are cuffed right now. about 80% dry.

here they are currently.. look how much cuff there is

I would not stress about length as much as the fact they make your hips look like a girl.

That is serious hip flair.

The Japan version looks like a slightly trimmer, slightly more tapered cut, or is that just my eyes playing tricks on me?

Yes; however, no two pair of Levis are ever identical. This same comparison could be made between two Japan versions or two MiUSA versions with similar results.

The hem on the Japanese denim pair is 8 inches compared with 8 1/4 inches on the Cone pair. The knee measurement (using the Ironheart yardstick, 13 inches down the inseam) is the same at 9 inches.

I decided to take the 76's in, that hip flare was bugging me too much. I'll get them back on friday..

in the meantime here are my 1890's Levi's waist overalls..(cone)

after one month

today, after 88 days wear

a watch pocket fade I made with a "pocket watch" just an old mechanical watch that doesn't good time with no strap I had laying about.

my idea with these jeans was to try and replicate the original calico miners jeans. I've done gardening in them, trimmed hedges in them, got on my hands and knees in them.. but to be honest I spend a lot of my time sitting in them. they are pretty tough to fade, I don't think they will be washed for a looooooooooong time.

@Paul T has been quiet while all this speculation about the reason for Levis' 40% discount on much of their UK LVC lines has been going on....Perhaps all but a few select vintages are going to be abandoned? The promotion finishes on 26 January.
