where's the problem? I own loads of old records, that are considered as classics and love them. But to me, my "alltime-faves" are somehow connected to my life, for example through livegigs etc., and I find this more in modern records. It makes a difference if you buy Damaged by Black Flag now or if you bought it back in the 80s and saw the band live.

And if robbie names The Strokes (or myself, Oasis), these were bands that made exactly the same shit as others 30 or 20 years earlier. but they influenced our musical education/evolution more than, let's say, Camel or King Crimson, Velevet Underground etc. But they might have helped discover them...

In my case: Das Island Manöver was released one day after I split with my gf, but us two went to the release party in the band's hometown (where my gf lives) despite that. The record has made to my favorite record of the year anyway and helped me a lot in dealing with everything. So I don't care if it's considered as classic or not, to me it is a milestone.

Also, just naming 10 records can't reflect somebody's taste, if he owns more than said 10 records...

And @ josh: Descendents (with e!) ;), Fugazi and Jawbreaker would have been in my Top 20 as well (although with Dear you and Everything Sucks)

My 2 ct

Max -- really well-done. I absolutely get what you're saying, and have to agree that one's personal connection to a band can be intensified by seeing them live.

I guess for me it's like this: I knew and liked The Velvet Underground, Television, and The Modern Lovers prior to the release of The Strokes' Is This It? I really enjoyed that record when it was released, and still do, but it doesn't improve enough on the sound/style it imitates to warrant inclusion among my all-time favorites. I'd use this same spurious logic to argue against many of the other bands I've seen people listing. The criteria I use to judge shit like this is, admittedly, a little odd. I believe the problem is that I'm not thinking of this thread as an opportunity for people to list records they really like, but rather as a place to enumerate significant albums that helped shape their musical consciousness. For folks even a few years younger than I am, it makes sense that something like Is This It? had that sort of impact. In short, I was, and remain, in the wrong.

And again, I really like The Strokes (whom I saw at the Metro here in Chicago prior to the release of Is This It? -- Oct. 5, 2001. Great show), Vampire Weekend, Spoon, and Arcade Fire.
