that's totally up to you i wouldn't forbid you to wear the pants after the contest but be prepared for some repairs (although it can't be worse than on the denime contest pairs)

Those being my first pair of Sams, I was wondering how well do those 100% cotton threads hold up? I remember reading that they break way faster than the polycotton ones.

I've had to do some crotch reinforcement of my older pair. It hadn't torn yet, but I felt it starting to come apart around 8 months. I've also had to restitch the left-back pocket a couple of times, which I'm surprised about since I don't carry anything in the pocket.

With the 24oz, I've been wearing them a bit over 5 months at this point and can see some of the threads breaking a little.

These are both heavier denim though (17 and 24oz), so I don't know how representative it'll be to a lighter weight.

I feel you...but the urge of a new pair of jeans should still be tamed by the thoughts of a great contest. If that doesn't help - do it like myself, get another pair until the comp. starts...
